Hardware & Technical Yaw on CH Fighterstick - making the ultimate elite hotas

Hi guys,

I want to share my CH Fighterstick mod. I had been flying with pedals. Unfortunately, they were not sprung for return to centre as they were designed for helicopter flight sims. This made them uncomfortable to use in elite.

I originally purchased a €5 knockoff psp analogue controller stick from eBay but the resolution was crap. I quickly ditched that idea. I have a spare Leo Bodnar board so I looked at other options. I have read several times that CH Products build commercial/industrial joysticks. A bit of searching and I found this:

It is a single axis thumbstick with a Hall effect sensor.

I purchased some mouldable plastic called Pollymorph to attach to the Fighterstick.

After a few attempts I came up with this:

Drilled a small hole in the grip and ran the wires to the base

In the base I cut a small slot for the wires

Soldered an old servo extension and inserted the Leo Bodnar board. I did consider cutting the Fighterstick throttle pot and connecting there. That would remove the need for the Bodnar board and requirement for a second USB lead. I don't use the throttle slider as I have the CH throttle. In the end I added the Bodnar as I had it spare.

I closed it all up and tested. Worked great so I went ahead and attached my mould to the stick with hot glue.

The analogue control is very comfortable. I can easily manipulate it with my index finger and still use my trigger finger and thumb for all other buttons and hats

The complete setup. Just waiting on Oculus CV1

Pretty cool idea. Is the polymorprh stuff holding up okay, and how resilient is it? Also, what's your opinion on the CH products? I've got an X52 and an X55 here, and while I prefer the X52 over the X55 they have both given me some issues. Wondering if I shouldn't move on to some CH materials for reliability factors.

Just did the mod today so I'll see how it holds up. Initial tests with the Pollymorph seem very good. It sets really hard once it cools.

I've never used an x52 so I can't comment on the durability. I've read enough bad comments not to buy them though. The CH Fighterstick and throttle are also plastic. They don't feel industrial by any means and are not a patch on my other sim setup of full size helicopter controls. Saying that they have been flawless and the plastic used is excellent quality and feels very sturdy and rugged. I've used them for over a year without issue.
