Yay! Finally tried exploring...

It's like dating a brunette for a while and then dumping her because she's not blonde, when she wasn't one to begin with - it's not the game that's shallow in this case, it's the player failing to recognize what he's getting into and making an informed decision with appropriate expectations :)

The beautiful thing with Elite is you can date that hot blonde, then leave her on the curb when an even hotter, freakier blonde catches your interest, then swap her out to snog with the cute little brunette that's been living right next door all this time...then go back to the original blonde once you've tired of her homespun ways:)

Negativism would be me quitting everytime I get any of these :
1. system map lock forcing me to shut ED down
2. realising I can't do my own waypoints, such a simple thing, and can be local to my own PC
3. losing my destination everytime I quit ED for the night, again can't be that difficult ?
4. my SRV exploding for no reason at all
5. local instance not working for only 16 players, let alone 30 or more (even when on each other's friend list)
6. mid air docking just above surface of planet
and another dozen problems just in exploration I can't remember...

ED is the best game I have played, doesn't mean I will not criticize when needed. I am giving it a total of 4 years, which is not a bad amount of time :)

Well said sir [up]

This reflects my thoughts exactly. I could add to the list couple of points regarding the ridiculous interface
7. I have a rather big panel on the dashboard on my ship displaying system population, faction, etc. It is beyond me why would somebody think that this is a crucial information that should always be in front of me on a very visible slot. Not to mention while exploring all these lines stay "None" forever and basically the entire big panel serves no purpose at all. And it cant be changed/customized to display something meaningful. While targeting information is hidden in a sub-sub-menu somewhere and while i select targets i cant see what is happening in front of my ship. Not to mention to see detailed information about what i just scanned i need to wait half a minute for system map to open and then do 3-4 clicks and scrolls. Makes sense?
8. There is another indicator showing fuel consumption per hour. Not how many remaining hours i can fly. Something which even my not so expensive car (incapable of interstellar jumps, just to mention :) ) can do. Sure, if had a calculator, i could calculate it...IF i knew how much fuel i currently have. Which i dont know precisely because my multimillion high-tech ship is unable to display how many tons of fuel it has in the tanks. Instead i have that big bar which gives some approximate idea on fuel levels.

...not sure if i should laugh or cry :S

...and it's kind of boring. I was sort of hoping there would be more rewards for doing it. Yeah, I know you get paid, but not much. I can make as much in one trip to a HIRES as I made in three evenings of exploring. And flying to each planet and moon and scanning them is for the birds. I would gladly pay more for some kind of super scanner that would scan everything in one shot or in a certain range. Also, I wish I could see on the map which systems have been discovered and which haven't instead of it showing everything as "undiscovered" when it really means "just undiscovered by me". What's the point in scanning and mapping everything if nothing in the UC database ever gets updated? Once a system is mapped, it should show up as mapped, otherwise, how will we ever know what's mapped and what isn't? That said, it is kind of fun in a "funboring" kind of way. I just wish there was a bit more to it, like being able to acquire rare items, or getting a reward for scanning enough items or something.

Also, do I even need weapons? I'm beginning to think class 4A shields and the three class 1 peashooters I'm armed with were a bit unnecessary.

Well done for giving it a try anyway. :)

It is true, the rewards are relatively low, but we aren't doing it for the money. Exploration does need some love from Frontier IMHO, it is perhaps a bit too "safe" and lacks some of the environmental hazards that probably should be there. When alien races arrive, weapons are likely to be a "strongly advised" item on the build, depending where you are planning to go. I am hopeful though that an alien craft will not just attack on sight, its response would be dependent on your behaviour. We shall see..

What has really lit up exploration for a lot of people is Distant Worlds. Previously, people would go out alone, but now they have realised that it doesn't have to be solitary. You can go as a group whether that is 3, 30 or 300. The social meetings were what made the trip, and kept people pushing onwards to the next. The result was that 500 people and counting crossed the galaxy, and for a significant number, it was their first trip outside the bubble! Having other experienced players around for support, kept them going and kept their belief that they could do it.

Perhaps an expedition like that would interest you more than flying alone. The Crab Nebula Expedition looks like being a great trip. It's not too far and takes in a lot of the best sights of our local neighborhood.

OP, exploring is definitely not for everyone... my first foray was a 3 week short trip to the veil nebulas and that was the most I had explored prior to the Distant Worlds Expedition.

Thankfully now we have a couple of options for mixing it up when it begins to get a bit boring, such as logging into CQC Arena instead of the main game for a while and also landing on planets and going hooning around in the SRV...

Personally I am enjoying exploring... but not as much as I enjoy other aspects of the game... For me, exploring is not about making fast credits, heck I have only made about 51 million from exploration to Ranger level, it is more about setting a goal for yourself and following it through... my goal for joining the DWE was 2 fold, A) to reach beagle point - the furtherest explored part of the galaxy and see if I can find some nice earth like worlds and other interesting places along the way, so far I have reached that goal and B) on the return journey, visit and scan enough places on the way home to go from Ranger to Elite in exploration rank, I suspect this latter goal will mean it will be some months before I end up back in the bubble as I have a few places to re-visit and scan than I passed through on my way to Beagle Point as well as wanting to do a complete run from one end of one of the Neutron Star Fiields to the other end (approx 25K LY) stopping and scanning all neutron stars within a certain radius of my planned travel route.

I do hope to return with a lot of first discoveries so when others visit some of the places I have been later on in the game, they will know I have been there :D

Well done for giving it a try anyway. :)

Actually, I'm still doing it. I've been doing it for a week now and while initially, it seemed super boring, now it just seems kinda boring. But grinding HIRES sites was also getting kind of repetitive. I'll give this a go for a bit, because the only other things I haven't tried are mining and trading, and they seem even more boring to me. That's actually a good thing about this game. Once you get tired of one thing, there's always something else to do.

I just don't understand why FD didn't give us the ability to store the materials we get from surface exploration into our storage holds and then let us sell our surplus materials, sort of like mining on a planets surface, I'm gagging for them to put in spatial phenomenons to chart and map out too. There's SOOOOOO much more FD can do with exploration.

Why explore? Because it's there.

Personally I find it relaxing and a different pace for other parts of ED, but not for everyone.

I am looking forward improving my experience with VR, but still happy explorer without.

I am similar to a lot of explorers out there in my rationale of 'why' do I explore:1. I find it incredibly relaxing. My job is uber-stressful and exploring deep without any distractions from psycho players and power-play nonsense is just my medication. 2. I find it incredibly beautiful out there. 3. I like the challenge very deep space exploration offers. 4. The exploring community is, without any doubt at all, the BEST most supportive community in this marvellous 'game'.

I've been out exploring for 3 months now. I've decided to head back soon so I can be in the bubble for the launch of engineers. Definitely won't be my last trip though. I love it ☺
