You can go from full speed to a stop with power to thrusters disabled.

Procedure:
1 Get to full throttle and get to top speed
2 Flight assist off
3 Throttle to 0
4 Disable power to thrusters
5 Flight assist on

I did this while messing around and was surprised when my type 7 came to a stop with no power to thrusters.

The handvawium explanation I have to this is that we basically fly around with reactionless drives, the exhaust is just waste products from the reactor, and the reason we stop when thrusters are off is friction in the drive machinery.
*waves hands around*

Imagiiiination yay.

No it isn't, the explanation is that we are 'planes in space. Same explanation there has always been.

Cause the engines want to make sure you don't flow out of orbit and override your turning off the engines a little.

I did some additional testing. With the thruster module powered off, you can't roll, pitch etc as you would expect. Having FA on or off makes no difference. However try this: Turn FA off and put the ship into a spin. Power the thruster module off. If you turn FA back on the spin will stop! This seems messed up to me, If Thrusters are not powered you shouldn't be able to maneuver the ship, but you can stop the ship in it's tracks, or stop a spin. I thought the in Lore explanation for FA is that the computer is controlling the ship's thrusters to make it handle like a plane. But if that is the case turning FA on with no power to thrusters should not change the ships movement until power is restored to thrusters.

During Beta & Gamma, FDEV made it clear their decisions regarding combat flight mechanics were purely for balance, not logic or physics.

You only turned off your thrusters. Not the special FA thrusters which are indestructible and cannot be turned off.

The 'physics' in ED are beyond lame.

Oops i forgot - blah blah are making the blah they want to blah, blah has to be sacrificed for blah (it's only a blah), maybe Blah's not the blah for you, go and play Blah blah instead.

Blah.

BLAH!

Et voila, problem solved. Isn't it great what we can achieve as a community?

When you turn your thrusters off, they either coast you to a stop or completely cut out and leave you adrift, depending on whether you have FA on or off.

If you have your thrusters destroyed, you're sent adrift, FA or no.

I thought this was a bug too. Then the first time I had a Viper, my "Drive" was destroyed by an NPC I was bounty hunting and I was sent adrift. Had to self destruct because this was before the patch where you could repair them with the auto-repair module.

(I suspect the NPC wasn't actually that vindictive, I just drifted outside his field of perception and he lost interest.)
