You can TRADE with other players?

Not really at the moment, though perhaps in future builds.

The closest you could get to trading with another player is by jettisoning goods and the other player scooping them then vice versa. It would be a pretty pointless at the moment because the scooped goods would be classed as stolen and could only be sold on the black market for around half the normal price.

I am sure it was discussed in a Developer Video by DBOBE himself. So, I hope to see it, would really help the Black Market scene.

Slim

I hope player trading is limited to within stations/outposts etc and not ship to ship or you'll get pirates demanding cargo be traded to them rather than just jettisoning it... that will just make traders much more attractive targets as suddenly their "booty" will be worth twice as much and won't attract police attention.

If that's the attitude I will just blow them up and take whatever is left, no big deal for me, but a much larger setback for the trader losing all cargo/ship/missions/bounties rather than drop a few containers.

Now why is it that a pirate disapproves of being blown up himself, but is quite happy to blow others up hmm? Surely he shouldn't expect to have to WORK for his booty, it should be just given freely shouldn't it? After all, this IS the age of entitlement, isn't it?

Well what is your take on how a pirate can be successful in this game? I'm just imagining what it will be like after release, and it seems to me this is how it will be. It's a dog eat dog galaxy, after all.

That's not how Elite works... if you blow them up there will be nothing left for you to take.

It is not like EVE where destroying a ship will allow you to loot whatever modules, ammo and equipment survived the explosion.

The ONLY way for you to get ANY loot from someone as a pirate is by forcing them to drop cargo.

If you decide to simply destroy them then the only things you achieve are;
1) Increasing the bounty on your own head which in effect means painting an even bigger target on your own back when being scanned by bounty hunters.
2) Wasting credits on ammunition. And I say waste since you get no loot or profit when destroying a ship.
3) Putting yourself at risk since opening fire and engaging in a fight might get your ship damaged or destroyed, depending on how good the other guy is at fighting, how close his friends are, how many security ships are in the area (and they WILL assist someone with Clean crime status if you attack them)

The fact that destroying a ship leaves NO loot makes piracy much more challenging than in games like EVE. In EVE you never really ransom anyone, you simply warp scramble them and destroy them, then take whatever is left. In EVE the piracy is about looting the wrecks and bragging about the kill-mails.

I am very happy that Elite has chosen a different approach to piracy, and the way it works in Elite is much better.

Now you have to threaten the target to drop their loot, or prove that you mean business by damaging their ship and threaten to destroy them.

Another thing to keep in mind is that shooting a Clean target gives you a small increase on your bounty, but actually destroying them counts as a murder and places a much higher bounty on your back. So you don't really want to kill your targets as a pirate.

And if you are just killing them, then you are not really a pirate but a murderer (some might even call it griefer) :)

TL;dr
Destroying ships means all their cargo is destroyed and you get NOTHING as a pirate. So the statement: "I will just blow them up and take whatever is left" does not work in Elite.

It's dog eat dog indeed... which is WHY traders should be encouraged to fight back against piracy, not just roll over and hand over the goods. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say there shouldn't be piracy... of course there should! It just shouldn't be easy - it's a high risk/high reward profession.

Something to remember though, the majority of your piracy isn't going to be PvP, it'll be PvE. Why so? A couple of reasons... firstly the game and its economy are designed specifically to discourage PvP actions - FDev and DBOBE have said many times they envisage a mostly PvE coop style of game with PvP being (direct quote here) "rare and meaningful". Secondly the size of the universe and the instancing system mean that you'll see a LOT more npc's than pc's. Think about the math for a minute - let's say there's 10000 players online at any time, world wide. That may seem like a lot but then you gotta realise that a fair chunk of them (say 25%) will be in solo mode simply because they don't want to be pirated, and another chunk (say another 25%) will be in group mode so they can play with their friends. That leaves only 5000 that you can pirate from, however this number is divided between 400 million systems, and that every player exists in an "island" that can support a maximum of 32 players. Then remember that friends will be grouped together in one island, and that the game's matching software will try to group you with players of similar levels. Then finally, there's gonna be a bunch of traders who are as good as you or better at combat and who are equally well armed, and there's gonna be a chunk of them who are also pirates, just like you, and will be competing for the same prizes and probably just as good at you as defending themselves.

So your question was how does a pirate become successful in this game? I'd suggest you get used to pirating from NPC's as soon as it becomes available. That's who I already target when I'm in bounty hunter mode... targetting PC's is useless. This is primarily a PvE game.

Ooooooh snap, I thought that ships would drop a quarter of random goods on destruction, that's how it was on the premium beta right? I thought the fact that they weren't doing it now was just a glitch or was removed temporarily.

That's pretty cool, it'll make piracy more Elite!

If you will attack player without properly requesting cargo you will find yourself in sea of pain when pirate bases reject you due of rep decrease.

Also yes, there will be ship to ship docking and trade in outer space.

Never give a pirate cargo under any circumstances. Run or fight, never give in.

The basic idea of being a pirate is to take away both the above options from the target.

You can't run, and if you fight, you'll get blown up.

That's the message sent when the Jolly Roger went up to the mast top.

You open fire? Happy to comply.

If the pirate targets the victim's cargo scoop it can cause some of cargo to escape, giving them some reward for their piratical actions without victim compliance.
