You can't Hide from me, David!

So I was watching a show when they threw in a reference to Nebula M78.

For those that don't know, Ultraman comes from the Nebula M78.

I was for some reason struck by the irrational thought that it would be great if the first person to reach Nebula M78 received an Ultraman ship decal. :D

Stroking my neckbeard a bit more, I went into Elite: Dangerous to check the location of M78. I'm sure any of you who've looked at the map understand how futile it is to just "look" for something like that, even if it is a giant nebula.

So I searched it, I typed in M78. And M78 exists in Elite: Dangerous. There are currently 3 bright blue stars in the area and nothing else.

Isn't that curious? There are no other popular Messier Nebulae in Elite that I have thought to look for yet. M78 is indeed 1600 light years from the current playable area in Elite, and there is nothing else in that area of space except for those 3 stars.

I've tried a couple dozen different nebulae, famous stars and regions of space over 1000 light years away from the current playable area. Nothing else has been found by the game search.

As far as I can tell, these are the only celestial bodies that have been put in the game outside of the "immediate" area we play in.

So what does this mean?

It's common for devs to have test-bed areas where they can experiment and play around building, destroying, and tweaking objects in real time. If this is what those 3 stars are for, and if you were to suddenly pop in on them to say hello, you wouldn't find any developers there currently since FD works using in-house builds of the engine they haven't released yet, but there is no reason to go through the effort of pulling these test-bed systems out of the builds they release to us since they are impossible to reach and almost impossible to find given the scale of Elite's map.

So there it is Mr. Braben. I know where you live.

To everyone else, you now know where to start digging. All of you guys who are much more astute than I at software development, graphics design and comic book lore get to work and pry out all of the dirty little secrets that Nebula M78 contains. If David is hiding a giant pink Ultraman in a sundress behind a neutron star out there, the world must know!

I'm on it. From which franchise?

The home planet of Mothman. It was destroyed and thats why he came to find a new home on Earth. POOR MOTHMAN!!! He tries to find a new home and he's beaten to the ground for only destroying half a city :(

Nebula M78 in the Ultra Man universe is 13 million light years away when in reality there is a Nebula M78 1600 light years away.

I wonder if there will be rogue gas giants drifting through the galaxy. It's a real phenomenon you know.

There are many places far outside the populated area, but the search filter is a little bit too exact, especially when considering that many stars have multiple names or name variations.

Try searching for Antares, Polaris (which is populated apparently!) or Sagittarius A*.

Polaris (which is populated apparently!)
If Frontier are being consistent with FFE, then yes, it's populated. By Thargoids.

If you want to look for other possible Thargoid worlds, then Pleione (real, Pleiades cluster) and Miackce (fictional, location unknown, homeworld) were the other two which FFE placed them in.

Wait, let me see if I get this...are you saying David IS Ultraman!

:D

The galaxy is very unfinished. If you go to the edge for instance you'll notice that the stars end before the arms of the galaxy in the background. Same for the halo, right now the stars seems more distributed in a cylinder than an oblate spheroid.

Actually...
Go into the Galactic Map and enter "TEST" in the search. You'll find your want to a spot about 33LY from our area, and right next door to Sol.

That's where you'll find the devs blowing things up and causing havoc. :)

It's also where the famous Port Zelada was located during Alpha. I wonder if it's still there?

I worked for an Adelaide Special Effects company in the late 80's (back when SFX were pneumatics and latex rubber) - we were commissioned to create several monsters for the Ultraman Television show.

Only bother to mention it because it was around then that I was playing Elite (and my first flight sim F-16 Falcon)

Bit kooky..

The synchronicity in this thread is a bit full circle for me.

I think there are going to be many other weird and wonderful areas out there to discover. Or, to put it in another way...

Last time I checked on the Galmap, Alpha Centauri and Proxima Centauri were separate systems, yet the Alpha Centauri system info lists 3 stars. So there are two Proximas... this... this... must all mean something!

TEST2 and TEST3 are nearby as well.

TEST3 was Iota Cruxis in Alpha.

TEST2 we never got to go to.

TEST was as you say Zelada, it's also I think the system that the single player scenarios are in. Didn't someone manage to get into supercruise from single player once?
