Elite / Frontier You don't know this?

Hi Guys,

I found the Frontier website with big surprise, after I saw some players chatting about it on the main channel in Vendetta.

I am a bit surprised there are so many people that are interested in a sequel to Elite and that don't know about Vendetta Online. I've looked for years for an Elite-like game to play, ideally with multi-player features, and I have found some years ago the above mentioned game, which I've played ever since.

I am writing here because Vendetta, which normally has an 8 hour free trial that requires just an email address, now runs a promotional campaign on mmorpg.com, where you can get a full month of free play.

I look forward to the next release of Elite and until then I look forward to see you in Elite, where I used to run a guild called Elite Evolution, for all Elite fans out there.

I tried it. Looks good (ish- of course I am used to Eve and therefore spoiled rotten ;) ), easy enough to play (PvP'ed on the first day, and by golly, I actually did not suck, heheh), and it seems like they did a nice job on the back story (although... rogue drones? Hm... it rings a bell, but erm... lemme think).

But somehow it felt like a grind almost right off the bat, and the constant switching between screens kind of annoyed me. So I didn't stick around for long- but I'll definitely keep an eye on Vendetta because it dóes appear to have potential!

1) Indeed

2) You can put it in Physics mode, where it acts more like the Frontier model.

How much is 'more'?

Besides, it's an MMO, so I doubt it'll cause all the universe to start behaving in a manner consistent with Newtonian physics.

Looks a bit too familiar.

As a long-time player of EVE Online (no, I'm not the Dogran you'll find on there; that's someone else - and, for the record, I'm nothing to do with the Dogran in World of Warcraft, either), there are a lot of adjustments I've always said I'd make if I suddenly found myself in charge of CCP.

Or, rather, there were ways in which I'd have made EVE different to what it is. I know that changing fundamental mechanics now that the game's well established would be disastrous. (See Star Wars Galaxies)

But I would love to see an EVE-style game with manual control of the ship; and particularly in a Newtonian physical environment. Especially now I'm getting the hang of FFE (a bit), I think I can legitimately join those who argue for full-on proper physics: I know that training yourself to fly properly in such a universe does give a sense of achievement, and is actually surprisingly straightforward once you shed your 1g, atmosphere-conditioned expectations about how things should act.

So Vendetta appeals quite a bit in that respect. What worries me, though, is that there are a little too many obvious similarities. The 'rogue drone' missions already mentioned (although it could be argued that that's generic enough to be expected in any such game); but what struck me was the backstory for Vendetta: human colonists stranded on their new worlds after the collapse of a wormhole linking them to Earth? Come on... Think of the scope for other storylines. FFE simply had humanity expanding into space, with Sol one system amongst many. Battlestar Galactica takes the 'separated colony' approach but assumes the colonies have simply lost touch with each other over time and distance.

I'll certainly keep an eye on Vendetta - it looks promising - but I don't think I'm going to be signing up just yet. But if Elite 4 shows up with a single-player mode...
