You know what I would spend real money on?

Licensed game related merchandise - for a fair bit of monies, I would but things to freshen up my flat with Elite. Some of these may have been suggested already (apologies for the repeat). I know Mobious does some wonderful stuff.
  • Ship models
  • Ship/station calendars
  • Towels (!)
  • Clothing (hats, sweaters, the fashion of 3300AD now!)
  • Phone/tablet covers
  • Large format prints (particularly us pilots superimposed into in-game scenery)
  • Stickers and patches of various sorts
  • Medals and commendations
  • Sunglasses
  • Belt buckles
  • Space Survival Gear (multitool etc)

Cosmetics for my ship/commander - it's being discussed, I know
  • Stickers
  • Bullhorns (kidding)
  • Decorations for the commanders cabin or inside the ship (when it becomes available)
  • In-game clothing

Gaming gear
  • Specialized keyboard
  • Elite skinned game pads/Oculus with Elite paint job
  • Game guides

Etc etc...

Merchandise is not very profitable unless sold in bulk. A huge chunk of the money players put in goes to production costs and profit for the hardware companies.

In game cosmetic items can help more, but are very short-term for revenue. They would have to keep releasing new skins etc all the time to try and encourage players to keep buying them, which means we end up with a flood of samey things. TF2 has a bit of a hat reputation on the back of this.

What Frontier will need is a form of consumable purchase that players will return to, see value in and appreciate paying for, without impacting negatively on the game for those that don't want to (or can't) pay more.

I dread the thought of that. No, I hope that all that is sold is permanent stuff, not things that have to be rented/re-purchased again and again.

What about temporary boosts? 10% extra credits from trade for the weekend. 15% extra credits from bounty kills for the month. Nothing too extreme, and certainly nothing needed for the average player, but bonuses for those that want to put some hours in over a short period and get a little more progression during that.

I wouldn't buy them myself, but I'd have no problem if others did.

I would spend money on buying a new graphic card, but as I want a GTX880 I would need to go into the future, so I have to wait cause NASA is not ready to deliver the adequate equipment yet...

Well actually they do, would have to spend some time in space :D

[*]Medals and commendations

Not sure about many of those other things, but a nice (fake) velvet lined box with a gold medal would be nice. Just one though, for reaching true Elite status.

Ha, there is no tax on trading in real gold.

New ship designs could be a revenue earner, i'm not talkin about extra capabilities for real cash, just many ships that look different from each other.

In the real world there are many different car models on the road that basically all do the same thing, if you could replace your Cobra MkIII with a Rockhopper MkIV (that had exactly the same stats but just looked different) for some cash it would add variety to the game without effecting game play at all and would always be an optional purchase but there are plenty of people who like to collect things, a hanger full of all the ship types would be irresistabel to some players.

I see it on World of Tanks amongst my clan, some of the guys have to have every new premium tank that comes out despite the fact that they are all worse than the equivalent tanks you unlock with XP.

Agree with you ... Marchandise or hardware are not really profitable for FD.
MT with cosmetic items are more efficient :)

100% agree...

also... http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5578

i would actually buy stuff to customise the internal area of my, of course to begin with that would only be the cockpit...

it could be very cheap, treated as Internal Equipment, transferable (to other players), sellable (in game to NPC or Player), storable (within ship or separate storage cache)

when we get the walking around in ships stuff, then it could all be expanded upon, could also be season locked... new items every 6 months, old items can not be bought anymore

these items could be sold in a random digital code format, given a chance for something rubbish or something amazing...

I'd really like to buy offical, physical medals/badges after earning them in the game.
I wouldn't mind an Elite sticker badge to put on my joystick either.

I am a nerd (expect for the intellectual bit) and I ruddy well want an official Elite badge to prove it! :p

As an afterthought, I would gladly pay for an antique wooden ship wheel (with the Elite logo in the middle), both in my cockpit and a small physical miniature for the desk. I'd also like AndyBs clock on it. :D
