You know what I'd rather see than atmospheric worlds?

I too am not fussed about atmospheric flight. Mine's a spaceship. If I wanted to fly airplanes I'd have bought an airplane game. Still, if it ever rolls around, I shan't complain.

I'd like to the source code opened up so all the armchair programmers who seem to think they're so brilliant can show us how it's done.

Come on guys, start coding those procedural cities and planets. It's just a few lines and then off to the pub, hooray!

best suggestion i ever did read here

need to ++++rep (3 extra +'s)

A whole plethora of activities to do on rocks.

People are getting way ahead of themselves, IMO.

But that's what FD have already said.

This coming year is the review of activity ..... more sand for the sandbox .... a fresh rakeover .... new toys to play with in the sand ... an area to wash your feet after playing ..... :)

It's not the actual flying through an atmosphere I'm interested in either, although I'd be a little disappointed if it's no different to what we currently have.

Right now I can land on maybe a quarter of the planets I find. Unlock Atmospheric rocky bodies & HMCs & that's probably another 50% I can explore, with gas giants & more exotic worlds justifiably coming later.

+1.

For example, I'd like to go out exploring again, but I feel I need a bit more than the odd fungal growth or geyser to entice me to explore planets and strange phenomenon. The ruins were a fantastic addition, but the chances of me finding anything like that on my own are pretty astronomical (pun intended).

Doing science and having more specialised exploration equipment might help make it a bit more interesting. There's only so many canyons and SRV jumps I can do before it gets samey. Not that I'm being negative at all, I totally love the game, but I think using Beyond to focus on gameplay mechanics is a wise move by Frontier, and sorely needed IMHO.

All that stuff would be great, but where do you think the 'more interesting stuff' is going to be found: on an airless rock or one with an atmosphere?

Ehhhh...seriously?

OP didn't ask about procedural anything. The question was about what activities we can do once we get there and although it's already been discussed a billion times, there's still no definitive answer.

So I'll give mine - looking at dem pretty rocks. I like exploring. I don't go out exploring to make money(though payouts are nice), I don't go out exploring to get the next scientific breakthrough. I wanna see pretty things and feel like I'm getting the best view to our beautiful galaxy with it's nebulae and stuff. Mountain peaks, valleys...and eventually rivers and caves. Plenty enough.

if the DEVs include some they wont tell you where anyway

On an airless rock you might find some outpost. On an atmospheric world you might find their home, Raxxla, Thargoid Homeworld, certainly more sophisticated bases.

You've got lots more opportunity for geological variety, compounds rather than the elements we currently find, plant & animal life, invasive bacteria, weather challenges, all sorts.

On an airless rock we already have most of what's likely to be found. Basic geology, and stuff left behind because it wasn't worth enough to maintain or retrieve.

Once atmospheric landings appear I can imagine most players would rarely visit an airless world again unless their mission required it.

Iwould like to see lava on volcanic rocks.
Volcanos would be nice also, and gases coming out of the top

And the temp of the dark side to be colder than the light side when landing on rocks.

Rocks closer to the star I would like to be hotter than those further away. Which means ships and srv would run hotter on these planets etc.

Well, that depends. With the same development resources available fore both of them, you would probably get much more content on the lifeless one, because most development time will be wasted on the looks if you want an atmosphere, flora, cities etc.

There isn't really a lack of great ideas for content on lifeless planets. I don't think any developer could ever manage to even come close to exhausting the pool of cool things you could do there.

After watching how the fans extended freelancer fer two whole decades past its own failed release date, I too would be very keen on seeing this happen and letting the great unwashed and unclean let loose on this game code. The results might just surprise ya when ye wake up one day to find yerself flying an X wing or the enterprise. Id rep ye if it werent fer the derision in the tone of yer suggestion.

I'd say people who say this are also getting ahead of themselves. Let's just see if we actually get the interesting planetary surfaces by the time Q4 is over. Not the pretty colors, those come in Q1. I mean the better terrain and ambience itself. Once we have that, I'll bet you atmospheric worlds would be a welcome addition. Remember all the tech they talked about wanting to implement? It would lay some interesting groundwork for future additions.

That's not to say that new things to do would be unwelcome. I bet FD could do some interesting things with even the airless worlds we have now.

*looks at shoulder patch*

I'm a pilot.

I will leave grubbing around on rocks to the dirt-people who were born on them, and stick to the stars.

You make a good point. I don't know the answer to that. But maybe by giving us more interesting tools and things to do as explorers, Frontierdev can make the galaxy a more interesting place for us to go out into. At least then we'd be in a position to make the most of exploring atmospheric worlds when they do finally arrive.
