You think rares are rare? where the heck is platinum?

Because these missions keep coming up. This isn't the only thread where folks are talking about Platinum being impossible to find. Why is the stuff even mentioned as a "commodity" if it isn't available as a commodity item? Why isn't it just used as a mining mission bribe and keep it off the metals list? Why even have a commodity price for it if the stuff never shows up anywhere? None of this makes any sense. Really, if Frontier want to have certain materials restricted to missions then please, how about treating them that way? Don't make us whiz away valuable time trying to find something that simply isn't there to begin with.

If these things were not listed as commodities then where would miners sell them? Same with the SAP 8 core container (though that's salvage not mining). Please don't say in the missions, the miners must be able to sell their goodies outside of missions. It is not like rares, which only appear in the market if they are produced & available there or you are carrying them.

Then why not have Platinum as a mission-only metal? Why even bother with the listing in commodity trading? Are miners going to go look for this stuff outside of a mission? Is it even worth carrying the useless entry on the commodities list?

I for one am all for reducing the size of the commodities list if it means getting rid of useless entries like Platinum, Pain-in-the-ass-ite, Neverland Containers, etc. It's a waste of time to have to scroll past all that fluff every time we need to find a useful entry in the commodity list. How about just have them show up when there is a rare available, like any other rare?

After foolishly accepting a mission to get Platinum (and one for Osmium) without having a known source and whizzing around for hours I finally resorted to searching the forums.
.
As a few have pointed out it looks like it's a mining only option, that's fine, I know that now, I'll wait until I go down that route before accepting another one of those missions.
.
I've had fun trying to find a station that sold it and been to places I wouldn't normally have gone.
.
The places that are mentioned in this post, Chambo, Timbarichs and Ciguru, non of their stations have it for sale at this time, so probably no need to bother in the future.

Palladium is a reasonably common enough metal that is both bought and sold.

Platinum, as has been already pointed out, is only available by mining, as is Painite.

Painite and Platinum both appear on the commodities market, in stations where it is purchased, so that miners can sell it as a trade good and find the best price for it.

In 2 hours this afternoon I got 50t Osmium, 24t Palladium, 14t Platinum, 11t Painite as well as some Silver and Gold. Everything else was vented or jettisoned.
The Osmium went to the Abres CG, a bit of the Palladium and Platinum were sold for the cash, and the rest along with all the Painite is earmarked for other places.

If you see a mission for Platinum, you have 4 options.
1) Don't take the mission.
2) Take the mission and not find a source of Platinum.
3) Take the mission and head out to a pristine metallic ring somewhere and mine the metal for yourself.
4) Take the mission and ask your friends, community, forum or whoever if they will sell you a few tons in exchange for some other commodity.

The few tons I have of Platinum are to complete faction missions for myself. The Painite is to help with the research of the Unknown Artefacts.
