Your first ship upgrade?

First upgrade would likely be bigger weapons, or perhaps bigger shields. Even as a trader there is no harm in having a bigger stick than the other guy.

I think my first upgrade will be an ECM-System.

I´ve no need for a Docking-Computer. You know why?

Cause i can land perfect manually with whistling the Donauwalzer

Large cargo bay is a must have for me too :)

The same for me. I think it's the cheapest one you can get and has always been my first upgrade.

Except in Oolite, when I had docked at the Black Monks Orbital Monestry (Damn the spelling) and with the credits they gave me, I brought a Large Cargo Bay, ECM System, A Front Beam Laser, Docking Computer, Docking Assist Computer, Auto-Targeting or something like that and then I had to repay them with 30, 000 credits by the end of four months.

Being a bounty hunter, my aim is be be as deadly as possible, as soon as possible. It's a weapon upgrade for me.

Ah, a fellow hunter!

I will be a bountyhunter only when I have some capital and have credits to have a decent ship. It is not a career you do half-heartedly. When I engage the enemy it has to be on my terms.

I think what the first upgrades should be is those that fit your role. I don't think there is a 'best upgrade'. As a BH you can own a pirate, I suspect it will work this way - I sure hope so - that intel will win you a fight, besides skill. To scan an enemy and know his systems provides a tactical advantage. But the exact mechanics...I don't know yet.

What do you think? Players who don't wanna fight might opt for stealth improving upgrades until they can make some mouldy 'ole dough to get some better defenses.

Well, I plan on starting in a Cobra Mk. III as opposed to the standard Sidewinder, so my first thought is a larger cargo bay.

That being said, no matter what space game I play, I end up as a combateer. The glory of combat just calls to me, so I imagine I will get an ECM next, or perhaps an upgraded weapon. (Not sure if I will go for lasers or projectile weapons yet.)

I wonder how much the head start actually is to have a ship like that. A dedicated player might get to a Cobra quick?

I'm wondering myself actually. Am I breaking gameplay balance by starting in something with more of a kick? One of the other options is Imperial Bounty Hunter:

Imperial Bounty Hunter: Have the option to start in an Imperial Colony with an Imperial Eagle Mk II Fighter with upgraded weapons and shields and 1,000 CR (randomised start system choice for multiplayer reasons).

I'd imagine that is the clear choice for combat folks! Is it balanced? Probably not, but I justify it by realizing that I'm no long a youngin' in his father's basement with days to whittle away in front of a PC. I get two hours a day TOPS, so I'd like to think it isn't too much of an advantage. ;)

There is something to be said for climbing the ladder starting at the bottom. Otherwise you might skip out on experiencing several start ships?

Perhaps, but you can always buy them later. You do raise a good point however, as I am still struggling with starting in my Cobra Mk. III, or starting in a Sidewinder like Frontier intends. After all, the Sidewinder was chosen, and it would feel so much better reaching Elite after starting from the bottom.

On the other hand I have played the previous Elite games, and I think I've 'earned' a better ship in the newest game.

Choices, choices. :(

No pure speculation at this point!

I don't know what I'd get. Since there is no list I have no idea what to expect. I am sure there will be upgrades that were not in the original games.

I would probably get an upgrade that would enhance my ability to earn money. Could be a large cargo bay or maybe passenger accomodation.

Not a docking computer though. I want to become an expert on docking. What if you get shot up and your DC is down?

I also might consider some weapon upgrade, cause it wil, pay off to be an ace fighter. So practice dogfighting with a little nooblike laser in the end, when owning my mining vessel, will help me survive.

Agreed, it's certainly too early to realistically think of upgrades, but imagination is a great place holder... :) Until we see the plethora of equipment upgrades, how much they cost and how easy it is to get them... well... let's see what happens.. :)

Going by what a dev said about docking . In that not all stations can offer dock assist, docking manually can also be quicker that assisted so there is a tangible benefit to being to dock manually. I suspect it will be easier than a lot of people think it may be.
