Your initial goals for the game?

Explaining ED to a colleague in response to the "no levels, no skills or other MMO artefacts", he asked "Well, what do you plan to do?"

Elite status is an obvious one but that's something that will come in time and not something I am explicitly chasing. Your goals will change over time I know, but here are my initial two goals with my first Commander:
  1. Own and fly a Panther Clipper.
  2. Obtain the highest possible Federation player rank.

Just curious as to what other people have as their initial "First Commander" goals?

Just have a great time in the game!
Explore.
Reach 'Elite' status.
Bring justice to wrong doers. And others if the money's good.
Other stuff!

You need to explain to your colleague that you can play games just *for fun*! :D

Anything the Emperor asks of me.

And push for proper interior design in all Imperial holdings. Humongous size compatible hat racks, Imperial planet bar globes, proper extended uniform storage, Giant Owl decorations, Golden and brass Eagle motives galore, storage permits and extra space for much needed entertainment. Caged large cats of many colours.

Just the most rudimentary standard of living with other words, in order to keep the spirit going.

Yeah, just like others said:
Have a good time.
Immerse myself in this incredible Elite universe and forget about me and my life.
Perhaps most of all I want to satisfy my curiosity. There is so much I want to see and experience, like all the cool ships (inside and out), the incredible planetary systems and cosmological phenomena, atmospheres of planets, planetary landings, cities, thargoids, lost civilizations, secrets, etc. etc.

that's the beauty of sandbox open world multiplayer game, i will do EVERYTHING, will start slowly and focused on earning, then when money will not be an issue more fun things to do, from coop to exploration, when planetary landings and fps kicks in a lot of new game play will be added.

i play open world games exactly because i can do what i want and what i want now and if there are 5-6 career paths in time i will try them all :)

1. Learn how to fly - check
2. Become filthy rich through trade
3. Equip the best exploration ship money can buy
4. Galaxy, here I come.

When I get bored of that I might go for some military commissions, or even try flying a passenger liner. Maybe bounty hunting if I learn how to shoot.

Ultimately I'd love to own my own capital ship, when/if they are eventually released. But I'll always have my trusty explorer nearby.

Mostly having fun in open world. I always loved freedom where I decide what to do and not some linear annoying quests and also need to gain 999 strength and 888 manna and find lvl 90 armor just to beat foes with lvl 99.... boooringgg <pukes out his guts>

Exploration and admiring (electronically made) cosmos is my main focus in ED Because I love cosmos but I don't have my rocket ship build up yet so I cannot go into space on my own...

I just want a large passenger ship, filled with sex slaves.

And I'll call it "the Love Boat"

On release day i might just log in, open a bottle of good wine, lean back watching the stars and try to grasp that the return of "Elite" is reality ;)

Meet up with my friends. Make us all some money so only those who specifically love the sidey are flying one. Find out what we like doing best, and do it

Correction to my original goal. My new goal is to fly carefully when in the vicinity of passenger ships as the Commander may be otherwise engaged and the ship may be seemingly out of control.

I shall be careful now, when booking seats on passenger boats.

I'm currently bounty hunting in an Eagle, but once beta wipe goes through, I'll be a pure pacifist in a hauler, see how far I can get without killing anyone.
