Your life is not enough...

Let's say a dedicated explorer tries to break record of system visits in Elite. How far he can go?

Rough calculation:

200 systems a day (fairly good number, considering some station visits for fuel and no pirate interdictions)

200 * 365 = 73.000 systems per year (he plays Elite every single day, no life.)

73.000 * 55 = 4.015.000 systems per lifetime (he starts to play Elite at age 15, ends at 70)

400.000.000.000 systems / 4.000.000 systems

Here you go, your life is not enough to visit even 0,001% of galaxy.

Sounds like a challenge.

I do recall a game on the Amiga I used to play around the same time as Elite II. It was called Captive. This was also one of those games you could probably never hope to complete in your lifetime but it was nowhere near as out of reach as ED is.

200 systems a day is a tall order for a single player and just arriving at a system doesn't = explored. You have to include all the satelites of the suns + their satelites.

[Edit - and then add scouring the atmosphere of gas giants + surface of solid bodies. Gosh! It's a mind bogglingly tall order].

Multiply that by 1 mil players and it would still be nigh on impossible to accomplish in 70 years.

Then, on top of that, many of the already populated systems could have as yet undiscovered asteroids, comets, etc. for us to find.

Personally, I'm just waiting for the FPS expansion so I can visit every ice world and write my name in the snow :D

So, according to this calculations, how we can trust Frontier that there is really such number of systems in the game? :D

To keep play fair-play, they should maintain servers with ED up&running at least till the moment all systems are discovered :p.

Heheh.. Yep a bit of a tall order. :)

How many (roughly) systems with stations were there going to be? Even visiting all those would take a while. :D

IIRC the number 70,000 or so has been thrown around for the number of inhabited systems.

But that's going to grow based on player behaviour as the background simulation builds new stations and the like.

~~~ Maths Stuff ~~~
Here you go, your life is not enough to visit even 0,001% of galaxy.
Which is exactly why I'm playing this game!!!!!
This is part of the appeal of the game for me. If I suffered from OCD and was a completionist and felt the need to visit every system then that would suck. I love the size and scale and the fact that there will always be somewhere new for everyone to explore, no matter how old the game gets,
I would assume then, that once the game goes live with the 400 billion star systems. New users who wanted to explore should be allowed to spawn near the known frontier, otherwise they may have a journey of several hundred, if not thousands of light years to make before they enter unknown space.
This would negate one of the Kickstarter backer tiers.
Let's switch the point of this thread.
There will be unvisitable number of anarchy systems and "freeports" out there, PC piracy (me) will infest mainly core / most profitable systems and trade routes.
  • There's no reason to react like "the sky is falling, this game will turn into EvE, we are doomed, we gonna die, piwates are coming, ruuuun"
  • If you want to avoid PC pirates, you will definitely have options to do so even with open play.
  • There will always be some low-none player traffic anarchy systems with good opportunities waiting to be found.
  • In total, NPC pirates will kill more players than PC pirates (if their AI is programmed good).
  • In your trade life, the game will be so dull and monotone that you will come freeport with your own free will. Mark my words today.
  • I hope devs realize that they have to programme very good NPC AI's in this game to fill the huge void PC pirates cannot fill. NPC pirates should provide real threat, otherwise repetitive playstyle will turn to "farming" and will lead to boredom of the player.
Just let them start with a stockwinder at a random frontier location. As KS backer I'm happy with that.
There are around 7 billion people on this planet and Im not going to meet all of them either but that's ok..
It's the circle of life:
From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
It could make a good Pilots Federation hymn. There's one for you Psykokow.
