Your Mining system is TERRIBLE!

Well that's one person's interpretation of "scaling" and "linear" but it's complete garbage, to me.

Slow or not, you're talking just a few seconds as opposed to the several minutes wasted just getting to the station, not to mention docking and getting back out to the asteroid field and not to mention searching for an asteroid that will give you want you want anyway.
A few seconds? Filling up 450 tons hold of Lakon Type 9 at the steady pace of 1 chunk / 10s (which is completely unsustainable but anyway) and, say, a 1t of mineral / 2 chunks yield => 2.5 hours.

Today's mining equipment goes from this

Current gameplay - as fine as it is - surely is closer to picture #1 than picture #2. I'm not sure what is the point in arguing so fiercely against suggestions / desires to see mining gameplay eventually expanded to offer more options and more efficient tools to the players willing to invest big money and take some risks.

*sigh*

Ok, I've made my point. I'm not in the mood of running in circles again. Hopefully, mining *will* be expanded at some point.

The only real problem with mining is that mining anything other than Palladium/Platinum/etc. in a select few systems is a giant waste of time. All they need to do is re-classify mined metals/ores and increase the value of them vs. "traded" ones.

That's only because there's no need for those lower value minerals yet. Just wait until a system needs all that base material for building a station or something.

That's not a game mechanic to my knowledge... and even still, the profit per ton will likely never be what it is for high value metals now. My point stands... currently, it's kind of broken, in that it's pointless unless you're mining high profit-per-ton resources.

I would love to see a system exclusive to larger (Type 7+) and dedicated mining vessels where you plant mining drill rigs on each asteroid and then pick up the collected contents at each rig. That would make it fun by carefully selecting where you drop the rigs (for the highest yield), eliminate the scoop chasing of smaller ships, provide progression to those dedicated to the craft of mining, and allow more advanced modules to emerge such as mining rig controllers and asteroid scanners as well as different kinds of drill bits for different kinds of metals/minerals/materials. They really need to create an ability to craft SOMETHING be it ships, stations, modules, or something because it stands there's no point to anything but the highest priced stuff.

So you want all materials to be the same value or something? I don't see your point. You want to make money, but obviously not very fast because you've chosen mining as your means to make money.

Okay, your choice. Now you want mining to be equally as profitable mining basic materials as it is to mine the high value materials? AND you want mining to be equally as lucrative as trading?

Is that what you're asking?

The point is, there isn't a reason to mine anything but high financial value materials.

YET.

It's not broken. It's not lacking. It's not poorly designed or any of the other arguments people mindlessly throw at mining because it doesn't do what they expect it to do the way they expect it to happen.

Just be patient. Wait for Frontier to fully develop mining. Odds are, they're WAY ahead of this conversation in terms of how they want mining to go and in what way they intend to change it, if at all.

Now this is a real suggestion. I like it!

I know you love to play the whole "your fault, you're dumb, you don't get it" card a lot... but at this point it is pointless to do mining unless you really enjoy the aspect of scooping up little rocks with your space-spoon. What people here are suggesting is making mining a viable career path for progressing in the game, getting bigger ships, etc., which it's not, unless you do it in one very specific way (the same way as every other player who is trying to do it), which is mine pristine metallic rings for high profit-per-ton metals. This is not how real mining works xD. I'm not saying make all minerals equal, but upping the value of "mined" minerals vs. traded ones... the ACTUAL thing I said. This would make mining things like indite and coltan profitable and worth someone's time, just maybe not AS worth it as mining platinum and palladium. Currently, if you're trying to mine coltan or indite, you're quite literally wasting your time unless you really enjoy the game mechanic.

So don't do it. So go find something else to do. The game isn't complete; you and I both know this. I'm convinced that something will be added to mining later and that Frontier already know what they want to do with mining. I'm certain that mining, in its current state, is a relative place holder for an upgraded system in the future. Right now, there's nothing to actually do with things you mine, but there will be. Just be patient and go find something else to do in the mean time. :)

Nothing is gained however by just "ignoring the bits you don't like." This forum is called "suggestions" for a reason. Sitting in these forums and saying "this is perfect, nothing should change, the developers already know what they're going to do, just sit back and let it happen" would negate the presence of a "suggestions" forum. This is not a hard concept.

EVERYTHING is gained by doing what's fun to you. If you don't find mining fun, don't do it.

Frontier are obviously not finished with mining.

Yes, this forum is called suggestions. Some suggestions are worth supporting. Some suggestions are worth ripping to shreds. This is not a hard concept. Contrary to popular opinion, not all suggestions deserve a Participation Trophy.
