Your number one feature priority for the devs in the new year.

Not major features but smaller easier to implement things. For me it has to be notes/ Commander log book.

Let as add notes to the map for things like black market locations, good trade routes, visited locations, mining locations etc. Having a load of post it notes stuck round my screen and desk is not very immersive!!
 
Some safe player non PVP zones so we can play multi player without the fear of ganking.
Not everyone likes PVP and I think any forced PVP game drastically limits its MMO player base.

Have you tried joining one of the PvE groups? Should give you the experience you are looking for.

Consider joining the Mobius (sic?) private group, as there will likely never be zones that restrict player actions other than being inside a station's perimeter.

I keep seeing posts such as this and it makes me wonder if there must be something wrong with my setup, I hardly ever see another player, let alone get 'ganked' by them - I'm currently in the Lave systems, surely there should be shed loads of players there?

Multi ship interdictions as previously said. Game needs to be harder. Spent 6 hours playing today with 2 interdictions, one an unshielded sidewinder and the other an eagle ( they interdicted an asp. )

Needs more bad guys out to get ya.
 
In order of priority from most important down:

1: Multiple commander slots

2: Mission chains, more variety, more involvement

3: Persistent NPC's you can contact

4: Commander's Log/Notes - I want to make my Commander's Journal in the game itself, not just on the forums.

5: Ship naming

Also:
- in-flight ship hull repair provided you have at least a repair module and a refinery and mining laser so you can mine for metals and use them in conjuction with repair module to repair hull.
- Ship skin and color modification, especially custom insignia, not only the pirate's skull, for e.g. I want to put my forum's avatar onto my cobra's ship skin, or anything else I may like, limitations in resolution and/or file type (e.g jpg, etc) and/or pic size obviously will apply).
- Expanding on Ship freighting: Large ships (Anaconda, Lakon type 9, etc class) can act as small outposts for yourself and your friends with ability to carry 2 eagle/sidewdr sized ships or 1 cobra sized ship. They shoud have ability to deploy special antenna's or FSD capable probes to transmit data to colonized space so you can send exploration data and claim bounty. Obviously no commodities market, and outfitting. Basic hull repair capability of stored ships and mothership.
 
An ingame stat that shows in bold right in the centre of the cockpit the ridiculously low chance you have of being "ganked" by another player.
 
So many things.. But top on the list is..

* The ability to play the game with my friends, without having to resort to constantly logging in/out in a hope we end up in the same universe.
