Your opinion pls - MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO

O7 Cmdrs

I'm currently happy with my 1070 but would like to bump up the HMD quality on the Rift for Elite, so I'm thinking of upgrading to MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO.

Has anyone any experience of this upgrade and what HMD quality / VR settings they were able to get?

Cheers ;)

Don`t own MSI GeForce RTX 2080 TI GAMING X TRIO but own Zotac 2080 TI AMP.

In my opinion GAMING X TRIO don`t worth extra money that MSI asked for it, it requeued additional power connector, but it not the best OC video adapter on the market, because of power limit. In factory clock, go for gygabyte (it my personal opinion that might be biased), if you wanna to overclock it, then (again, my personal opinion) you should buy EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FTW3

P.S. Missed that you aimed for 2080 not 2080TI, sorry, you can ignore my post.

That's disappointing, thought HMD quality would be higher - they're the settings I run atm with a 1070 and a 8700K @ 4.7Mhz. What RAM and CPU are you using?

I’d of thought you do a bit better than that with a 2080. The 1080Ti and 2080 are about the same and I can do 1.0 + 1.25 on a normal 1080 and maintain 90FPS. I’ll post a video a linked in another thread, my settings are at the end of it but it’s a modified VR Ultra. I’d expect to get the same but with HMDQ of 1.5 with a 2080 but that’s just a guess as I don’t have a 1080Ti.

8700k@5.2GHz and 32Gb 3200MHz cl14 ram.

You can push the HMD quality higher if you drop the game settings a bit, but I prefer to run with everything maxed including shadows, AA and ambient occlusion (essentially the same settings I run in 2d), if you were to drop to the "vr ultra" preset, you could probably push to 1.5xHMD.

That sucks, I was thinking about going to a 2080 at some point (wish I’d just bought a 1080ti in the first place). Sounds like a 2080 ti would be a bigger jump but that price is madness :(

Be no point me upgrading just for 0.25 higher HMD without increasing other settings.

My thoughts exactly. Not going to spend £750 for a 0.25 upgrade. Will wait for prices to drop to £600ish and Pimax 5K+ to be readily available before I re-consider.

Thanks for your feedback all

Yeah I spotted that card, but couldn't find any reviews or benchmarks.

EDIT - never mind, checking EVGA, there is a 90Mhz difference in clock speed between Black and XC edition:
Black Edition
XC

I don't imagine there is a noticeable difference in performance

I am a bit tempted, I should be able to get £240ish for my 1080 by chopping it in at CEX making the cost to change £410.

Grrr why is the Ti so expensive. That was the card I was waiting for but over £1000!

The 2080 does make a bit more sense for you though because unless you have fairly low quality settings I’d imagine you are in ASW much of the time, like TorTorden says.

My thoughts too. If Ti was £800, I'd just get it, but I cant justify the £1000+ region for something that's a bit faster than a £650 card. Could probably sell my 1070 for ~£200 on ebay, so total cost about £450. Not too bad, but I'm tight, so going to wait until the card drops another ~£150. No rush as I'm only upgrading for the Pimax 5K+ and it'll be at least 3 months before all the kickstarter backers have had theirs. So I reckon I have a 6 month wait - it'll go quickly, lots of other stuff to do!

With any luck there are many potential buyers coming to the same conclusion as us and they aren’t selling very well. That way they might lower the ludicrous prices.

About £800 would be low enough for me to order one too.

I can not see a use case for ray tracing or DSS in ED.

So any Turing price premium over a Pascal performance sibling isn’t worth it for ED alone...

That's true. The trouble is they have bet the bank on it and shifted the entire product line alone one to hide that they haven't really made any progress for existing uses. A 2080 is now what would have been a 2080ti and the 2080ti is really a Titan (going by pricing anyway). If they have the audacity to bring out a Titian with the current prices then they really are taking the urine out of customers.... £3000, why not!

That's the Titan V: $3k, free shipping though..

And it performs about 5% less than the 2080ti comparatively though.

It was launched a little over a year ago and tests had it somewhere in the +25% over the 1080ti.

I believe the 2080ti get about 30-35% over the 1080ti in normal rasterized games.

I just got an MSI 2080 Gaming Trio. Love the card BUT.

I also have a VIVE PRO, the 2080 allowed me to go from LOW to MED settings with only an occasional drop below 90fps.
4.8Ghz 8700, 32GB RAM( 3200 ), NVME SSD.

Before I had/used a MSI 1080 & it was fine with my OCULUS, but I wanted no screen door & had read about the lens mod for the VIVE with regular lenses ( NOT THE FRENSEL Lenses) from the GEAR VR. LOVE the CLEAR look of the gear vr lenses.

I really need to try the RIFT with the 2080. The frame rate on my settings ( wish I had written them down High or Ultra ) went from averaging 173 fps on my 1440p setup to around 250fps with the 2080, But I use Dr. Kai's profiler & I tend to tweak so much that I could not tell you exactly where my settings are ATM.

My recommendation is wait till the prices come down & the get the TI. that way there won't be any next higher step. You would have the fastest thing available. But I understand that's a bit "Pipe Dream" and quite unrealistic. I had to cash in vacation time to swing the $850ish I wish I had been able to get a TI, but the only ones IN_STOCK were >$1500-1700. Too many greedy resellers!
