General / Off-Topic Your Sci-fi film reccomendations?

The first 4 episodes of Lexx were feature length freaky Sci Fi from hell. Uncompromisingly brutal and nasty. Just for example (minor spoiler)

In the first Lexx you get to see the future society method of dealing with crime and punishment. To simply execute people would be a waste, so a special machine is constructed with lots of little saws. It saws out all of a persons vital organs, and whatever is left is drained off into a "protein bank". All of this happens pretty graphically.

After this the series ended up as typical 1 hour affairs which were sanitized in comparison, and they also lost a lot of the creative whackyness. Series 2 was ok though, but after that things went completely to bits.

If you like whacky stuff you should also look up Naked Lunch, but I guarantee confusion.

Sounds irresistible I'll check it out.

Try "Europa Report" if you haven't seen it already.

I haven't, but guessed it's human meat of some kind. Don't tell me if I'm not right on CMDR....

Dr. Strangepork, in the future you will be very... popular <drool>

I just thought of another obscure movie that's fairly worth watching.. "Runaway" with Tom Selleck. Just look at those drones the news journalists use.

You're the star here CMDR!

Actually my heyday was in the 80's in my role as comedian/actor in the much Ill fated 'Pigs in Space', portion of the much celebrated Muppet Show.

Argh, those weren't the days I can tell you, that Miss Piggy, what a....

P.S. You can call me Julius, though it's pronounced Yulius, in your western tongue.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
There can only be one greatest Science Fiction movie of all time.. #1 - Forbidden Planet

As for the obscure recommendation, I don't know how obscure seeing as everyone knows the spoiler... Soylent Green.

+1 for Forbidden Planet. :) One of my favorites for sure.

For pure sci-fi I gotta go with 'The Andromeda Strain' (1971). Real science with actors who behaved and looked like scientist with no love story or excessive melodrama. 'Forbidden Planet' of course.
'The Incredible Shrinking Man' sounds silly but is an amazing story of survival and enlightenment. If your more into the end of the world 'A Boy and His Dog' is a little seen gem (and on YouTube), 'The Last Man on Earth' is more horror then scifi but still worth a look.
If your into weird 'Zardoz' might be your thing along with 'Barbarella', 'Tank Girl', 'Alphaville', 'Slaughter House Five', 'Fantastic Planet' and 'Heavy Metal'.
There's just a few.

Most informative thank you. CMDR.

I'm assuming you want the ones that are a bit off the beaten track, otherwise, where would I stop?

Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise's best work imo.
Hunter Prey
Snowpiercer

Blade Runner obviously but I thought Interstellar was an amazing movie. Not many movies make me tense but Interstellar managed to and part of it was due to the music. Also Space 1999 Dragons Domain. You can watch most if not all episodes on YT. Yes Space 1999 is a bit cheesy and I may have burst out laughing a couple times but it has Maya in it.

Not great, but not bad and you may not have seen them:

Cargo: Year 2267. The ecosystem of Earth has been destroyed and mankind is forced to live in orbit. The story of CARGO takes place on the derelict spaceship KASSANDRA on its 8 year journey to a remote freight-station in deep space...

Love: After losing contact with Earth, Astronaut Lee Miller becomes stranded in orbit alone aboard the abandoned International Space Station. As the life support systems dwindle, Lee battles to maintain his sanity whilst he alternates between performing repairs and reading the 1864 journal of an American Civil War soldier Captain Briggs. He faces a slow, claustrophobic and lonely death, until he discovers the mysterious object found by Briggs aboard the ship.

Pandorum: Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the ship. They can't remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission? With Lt. Payton staying behind to guide him via radio transmitter, Cpl. Bower ventures deep into the ship and begins to uncover a terrifying reality.

Spot on, thanks man.

Many many favourites and dont know if anyone mentioned it yet but...serenity is an all time personal favorite.

Oblivion from a couple years back was surprisingly good even though it sorta flopped on general release.

5th Element...dont try to take it seriously, its supposed to be funny.

Matrix trilogy although the plot in the third is a bit...well if ye seen it ye will know.

I admit Im also a bit of a Riddick fanboi...its an acquired taste.

Loved the judge dredd movie which was as violent as one hoped it would be...hope theres a sequel cos Karl Urban is a way better Dredd than stallone was. Im an old 2000ad fan and the stallone movie was crap because stallone was crap as opposed to the movie itself. Dredd never takes his helmet off...ever. Its his trademark which stallone ignored.

"The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

I wouldn't mind erasing everything from January 2016 onwards.

My all-time favourite has to be "Bladerunner" but just recently I have been really captivated by the story and sheer mood scenes (and use of an O'Neil Cylinder toward the end) in "Interstellar"
and the "lander" was very Viper-like.
.
Then there was "The Martian" the beautifully evocative vista's of Mars and vertigo inducing last rescue scene were up to Ridley Scott's usual standard. All IMHO

Batman vs Superman was good I tell you! And what about Rogue One?

By the way Op, you could try The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension.

I'm with you there. You have pretty good taste in movies IMO. Thanks.

By the way everyone, has anyone not seen the Blade Runner 2 teaser?

The Martian showed Ridley Scott is still awesome. Prometheus showed he is capable of laying an egg.

Please let this be awesome!
