Your Zoo/Animal Bucket List

What are some zoos that you’ve always wanted to visit but haven't? Also, what are some animals that you’ve always wanted to see but haven’t? Feel free to share!

For example, I grew up watching Phineas and Ferb, so I've always wanted to see a platypus in real life! (A living one, not a taxidermy one like the one in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History) When I found out that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has the only ones in captivity in America, that was added to my bucket list. However, I also found out that there’s a sanctuary in Australia that offers a “Wade with a platypus” tour, and I really want to experience that!

I also want to see an Andean Condor. I just figured that their large size would be impressive.

From my country: Africam Safari and Zoo Leon who are the only 2 AZA zoos in Mexico and The Chapultepec Zoo who has the last Mexican Panda and a lot of uniques

And global zoos: Both San Diego zoos, Singapore Zoos ( Bird Paradaise, Night Safari, River wonders and the main zoo), The bronx Zoo and Berlin zoo from my personal wishlist

Well pretty much a grand tour of the key west coast north american zoos would top my bucket list. Considering I have built or building these zoos in planet zoo, it would be a wonderful experience to see them in real life.

  • San Diego Zoo
  • Woodland Park Zoo
  • Oregon Zoo
  • Calgary Zoo

Further afield zoos might include Singapore Zoo (probably the least likely as I don't think I can manage the flight time, 10 hours is about my upper limit), and possibly the Berlin zoo if I can manage to gather what remains of my school learnt german.

Also I probably want to explore more local zoos in England as I don't venture south very often. Zoos like chester Zoo and Yorkshire wildlife park also appear on my bucket list. I really need to see if those 2 zoos are worthy of their high rating considering how the aquarium reviews lied about how the national aquarium in plymouth was the best.

I've been to both San Diego and Singapore (plus the Night Safari and Bird Paradise back when it was called Jurong Birdpark) but would gladly visit again. I also want to visit Prairi Daiza one day. I'm hoping that things will one day stabilise enough for my partner and I that we can afford a big Eurotrip together and see some of the amazing zoos there.

There's also the aquarium in Osaka I'm dying to see, Taronga Zoo in Sydney, London Zoo, Chester Zoo, and the Prague Zoo. There used to be a bunch of American zoos on the list (Bronx/Central Park/Queens, Henry Doorly, Fort Worth, Denver) but these have fallen by the wayside as my desire to visit the USA has dwindled.

I also want to see an Andean Condor. I just figured that their large size would be impressive.
The Franklin Park Zoo in Boston has a pair. Don’t know if you’re in the area though. They’re also one of 8 zoos in North America to hold Kiwis.

Anyways, my bucket list:

Zoos:
. San Diego Zoo
. San Diego Safari Park
. Bronx Zoo
. Central Park Zoo
. Edinburgh Zoo
. Taronga Zoo
. Beardsley Zoo, planning to go next year
. Singapore Zoo
. Henry Doorly Zoo

Animals:
. Echidna
. Lyrebird
. Sand Cat
. Pallas Cat
. Fossa
. Wild Bison
. Wild Grizzly or Black Bears (Hoping to see these in a possible trip to Yellowstone in the future)

Cool Animals I’ve Seen:
. Wild Pronghorn
. Wild Elk/Wapiti
. Kiwi
. Andean Condor
. Stellar’s Sea Eagle
. Babirusa
. Giant Otter
. Giant Panda
. Takin
. Markhor
. Arctic Fox
. Pygmy Hippo
. Bush Dog

Both Chester and YWP are very good. Oh yea and don't worry about not knowing German, all the signage in both Berlin zoos is in English as well!

My hot take from an outside perspective is that San Diego looks overhyped, definitely very good but "best in the world" tier? I honestly think Bronx and Omaha look better.

That being said, I'm much more interested in European zoos and the three currently at the top of my bucket list are Burgers, Prague, and Vienna.

As for UK zoos I haven't visited yet I think the big three for me would be Hamerton, Jersey and Slimbridge.

Yeah thats what I'm starting to think aswell, I only want to visit it so I can see the zoo I'm recreating ingame. Many other zoo's like the bronx, omaha and others have arguably better habitat design and collections.

While I unfortunately can't afford to travel much anymore like I used to, I'd love to go to Australia.
I grew up on Steve Irwin, but also what made me wanna go to Australia is because, as a kid, I watched an animated movie called Kangaroo Jack: G'Day USA, and it was filled with Australian animals and a kangaroo in Vegas (who woulda thought?). So, I'd love to travel throughout the outback and forests of Australia and see some of y'all's crazy wildlife. Basically, the entire selection of Australian animals is my bucket list.

Also, I'd love to see the bush dogs in the San Antonio zoo (assuming they haven't passed away yet) and I'd love to see the Mexican panda, too, but time's running out for both, and I may not be able to go to Mexico anytime soon, either

If you ever come to New England, they have Bush Dogs at the Stone Zoo.

@Orkan you have to go to the Bronx Zoo! Best zoo in the Northeast hands down!

I want to go to San Diego Zoo (and the Safari Park!). I also am interested in: The Living Desert Zoo in California, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, LA Zoo, maybe the Wilds or Columbus Zoo.
As far as individual animal types go:
  • Dhole
  • Tree Kangaroo
  • Arctic Fox*
  • Timber Wolf*
  • Cloud Rat
  • Serow
  • Tanuki
  • Echidna
  • Tree Shrew
  • Fishing Cat
  • Pallas' Cat
Mentioned on this thread that I have seen: Andean Condor (she wasn't too big, but still very impressive!), Sloth Bear (fluffy like our Black Pomeranians so very adorable ❤️ I mean... ...from a safe distance :ROFLMAO:), Sand Cat (looks like a domestic cat but still very cool!)
*I have seen at the fair but want to see in a typical zoo setting!

Some memorable animals I have seen in addition to one mentioned in the thread above:
  • Nyala
  • African Wild Dog
  • Maned Wolf
  • Babirusa

  • American (?) Flamingo
  • Asiatic Bear

  • Red Fox
  • Bat-eared Fox

  • Rock Hyrax
Seen in the Wild

My zoo bucket list based on my country's zoos (UK)
  • Highland Wildlife Park - Always wanted to visit this place, unfortunately it is too long way from where I live.
  • Watatunga Wildlife Reserve - Hardcore ungulate fan, I need to visit that place lol
  • Both Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Park
  • Hamerton Zoo - Collection of animals that are rare in UK/EU zoos, the only UK zoo with brown hyena currently, this place also have lots of Oceanian animals.
My animal bucket list:
  • Spotted Hyena/Any hyena species - Never seen a hyena irl in my life
  • Kiwi
  • Short-Beaked Echidna
  • Nile Lechwe - I couldn't remember if I actually saw it at zoos I went
  • Ibex
  • Wombat
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Platypus
  • Markhor
  • Pudu
  • Musk Ox

I would Like to go to both Zoos in Berlin one time and hopefully within the Close Future. Berlin Tiergarten and Berlin Zoo. There you can see Pandas and this is surely a rare possibility to watch them.
I've been to a zoo in Berlin but I was three years old so IDK which one and don't remember it at all... :( My parents say it was way different to our zoos.

Bucket list of Australian zoos I'd most like to visit:
  • Warrawong Sanctuary, Urimbirra Wildlife Park - These are both small, lower budget native wildlife parks, and I'm mainly keen to visit them because they're zoos in my local region I haven't visited yet. Warrawong also has the only remaining platypus population on mainland South Australia, but they live semi-wild in a big lake so I wouldn't really consider them captive
  • Taronga Zoo, Melbourne Zoo, Perth Zoo - Just the big capital city zoos I haven't been to yet, also have quite a few species I haven't seen in zoos yet
  • Wild Life Sydney Zoo - Sets itself apart from most other wildlife parks by being set indoors, right on the Darling Harbour
  • Healesville Sanctuary - First place platypus were bred in captivity, also one of the biggest native fauna parks in Australia
  • David Fleay Wildlife Park - Home to some really cool species like the bridled nailtail wallaby, Proserpine rock wallaby and Lumholtz's tree kangaroo. David Fleay, the park's founder and namesake, was also a pretty legendary Australian biologist - he's the person who first bred platypus at Healesville
  • Territory Wildlife Park - Houses a bunch of species from the tropical Northern Territory not kept in captivity anywhere else in the world, and if the Alice Springs Desert Park is anything to go by it'll probably be one of my favourite zoos
Some zoos in the surrounding region I’m interested in:
  • Auckland Zoo, New Zealand
  • Zoological & Forest Park, New Caledonia (I actually will be visiting Noumea later this year but only very briefly so I'm not sure I'll have the time to visit the park - that's the best way for me to see kagu and a bunch of other New Caledonian endemics though!)
  • Singapore Zoo, Singapore
  • Night Safari, Singapore
  • Port Moresby Nature Park, Papua New Guinea
Of course visiting a whole bunch of zoos in Europe and North America would be amazing, but there are so many that I wouldn't know where to start with choosing between them!
