Zero Punctuation Top 5s...

Always delivers. And his reason for placing ED where he did is a major reason I love this game.

Ps there's another thread on page 2 about this. The forum is moving fast today.

No, just long enough to do the tutorials, USS mining, getting fined for stolen goods, being chased by cops, attacking pirates, trading, exploring and dying a few times. No more than 20-30 hours tops.

The interesting thing about this post is that I can't figure out if it's ironic, sarcastic or serious. This could truly be a post that both a 'fanboy' and 'hater' could have posted... :D

Why? the game is good... I dont get all the hate , yes it has issues but its not that bad

There's a reason people that put more time into ED tend to become more and more disillusioned with it -- it's impressive at first, but the reality is that it's an incredibly shallow game with a burnout-inducing sense of sameness and shallowness to everything. Personally, I don't really care about the 1:1 scale of the Milky Way -- 99.999% of it is never going to be seen. I would've been happy if Frontier had taken EVE's or Star Citizen's approach to things -- quality and depth over quantity. Star Citizen's alpha 2.0 in particular might be a buggy mess, but the missions themselves are incomprehensibly better and more engaging than anything Elite could ever conceive in its current state.

The game is good but it takes most people who like it a certain amount of time played before they realize there's nothing to do outside of you imagining stories. Once you have the ship(s) you wanted and millions of CR just sitting there, yeah.
Sure you can grind your ELITE ranks, but lol.. As far as I know that just gives you a screen where it says ELITE 100%.

Soothsayer said it better than I could.

If it's a "grind" for you, don't do it.

That applies to any game, life in general and pepper.

This.

In my 500+ hours of Elite, I haven't once felt the need to grind for anything. I've got an A rated Asp and a mostly maxed out Clipper but those mostly stay docked. I'm a Duke with the empire and I didn't just sit there spamming charity missions. Currently I'm happy bombing around in my Viper mk.IV, pirating and working the background sim. I've got enough credits for around a dozen re-buys on my current set up and simply enjoy flying a space ship in a very immersive environment.

I think the people that get burned out and gripe about how shallow the game is, are the ones who's only goals are to have the biggest and most expensive ships as fast as possible. Of course it's going to feel like a "grind" to do that. Simply put though, you don't NEED the biggest and most expensive ship to enjoy Elite. If you think it's boring and shallow in a viper, why would the game suddenly be more exciting in a Cutter? Maybe slow down and use your imagination. Gasp.

I'd be curious to hear the thoughts of those who scoff at the imagination bit, when it comes to a book.

Omg, why would I use my imagination instead of just reading through as fast as I can? These books are so shallow! All they are is words on a page, and if you've seen one page of words, it's the same as all the others.... I did all that and then when I got to the end, it's just blank!

I guess patience is a rare commodity in a world now based off of instant gratification.

Agreed. But then we always knew Elite wasn't a game to suit all tastes........

I think that's exactly right.

At least from my perspective, it seems there are many people who buy Elite with wholly unrealistic expectations as to "what" it actually is. I imagine quite a few are expecting a generic, action packed, on rails AAA title but in space; where the 'end game' stuff makes you better at the game it's self.

That's probably pretty far from the truth in regards to elite. It can have its action packed/nerve wracking moments but because those moments are the entire basis of Elite, it becomes "boring".

People who are expecting an over arching story about them being the "hero" in one way or another are also sorely disappointed. In Elite, you are but one singular pilot in a galaxy with comprised of around 400 billion star systems. It doesn't matter if one flys a sidewinder or an anaconda, the fact of the matter is this: Players are insignificant on a galactic scale. Because people aren't the protagonists in some epic tale and their actions don't have a massive impact on the Galaxy, they call the game "shallow".

At the end of the day though, some will immensely enjoy Elite for years to come. Others, simply won't. It's just a shame that those that don't will go out of their way to tear the game to pieces just because (IMO) they don't get what it's really about.

Maybe FD should have some kind of trigger warning.

Personally, I would rate Elite as my number one game of 2015, given how much more I've played it than any other game in my library.

Eh. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

PS: don't get me wrong, there's plenty I'd like to see added or tweaked and if FD botched the game royally, I'd hold them to it. I just think people need to see that there's more to the game than grinding X activity ad nauseam to receive Y prize.

Take a step back. Enjoy the ride.

Yahtzee has a heavy bias toward anti-multiplayer very visible throughout his reviews, and he made it clear in his review of ED.

I wouldn't call his review an accurate reflection of the game.
