Zoo Design

I’ve actually been there! :)
We had decided to take the train ride and din’t walk (very much). It was a night tour and we both were exhausted from previous three days of intense city visiting.

Unfortunately, the train was way too fast for our liking and we couldn’t fully enjoy the animals. In retrospect, I feel this was a shame and a missed opportunity. Especially now, as Planet Zoo sparked my interest in zoos way beyond the previous levels and I’ve started to read through the documents you’ve linked above.

By the way, this is also the reason, why I am not looking forward to build one of these rides in Planet Zoo ... I feel, they are not the optimal way to experience a zoo. I want to stop. I want to take my time and watch.

That's a super interesting blog to read, @dannydanbo, thank you for linking it! I think it will be a lot of fun seeing how people get inspired to create their Zoos, and it will be a challenging aspect for some. Hopefully this will help!

Thanks. I'm still reading through it. It is very detailed. It's one of those things you stumble across while looking for something else.

It's really interesting to read, how some of the topics discussed in this forum do appear in the dissertation, too!
For example in the thread "The Dichotomy of the Biome and Foliage System": How do real zoos deal with the desire to show the animal's real biome (educational reaons!) vs. the annoying fact that the zoo might not allow the growth of those plants due to it's climat or geology?

Also interesting: the desire of all YouTubers I've watched so far to create their absulutely briliant "rockwork" vs. this passage from the blog: "Natural stone should by all means be used but not overdone unless the zoo is fortunate enough to exist in a geologically rich area, or all exhibits will begin to look the same ".
I've also learned about the existance of "Gunite" and its use! :)

However, as interesting and educating the read is - it's also clear that we probably will create our dream zoos in 'Planet Zoo' and not realistic ones. Well - at least I will not limit myself to sparse rockwork or resonable foilage. And I think, this is totally fine :)

But I am quite sure that, at some point, I will try a zoo that is as close to reality as I can get. It might not be so pretty, but features it's own inherent rewards nevertheless.

Exactly @Deggial. I watched every Tuber video I could find and they all over plant. They get the habitat to point where the animal is happy, but then they keep adding plants in because they want it to look pretty. And all the rocks they put everywhere. What's so great about those rocks? Not every animal wants or needs a pile of boulders to climb over. It's plains zebras. They want flat grass to run on but there's all those rocks everywhere. I was very disappointed in several Tubers that over planted. You have the entire park to add boulders and trees and plants to.

Oh, I didn’t mean the “brilliant” sarcastic by any means! While (as written) the abundant use of rocks is unrealistic as hell, it also (often) looks great, imo - and I will probably do the same in my “normal” zoos. ;)
It will be interesting to see, if the quoted “samey look” will prove true ...

But as stated, I will probably also try a realistic approach based on your awesome link.
