Zoo Keeps Crashing - 1.10 Modded

Hello all,

I wasn’t sure where to post this as there doesn’t appear to be a dedicated section in the forums for this kind of thing (at least not one I can find anyway 😅).

I am experiencing consistent crashing when loading into a certain save file. I have tried multiple approaches from both software to hardware and I still keep getting the same crashes under the same circumstances. I am using mods (I’m a sinner, I know 😂) but from my testing, it doesn’t appear to be a mod problem.

The issue I’m experiencing is whenever I load into a certain save file, I experience a crash if I don’t pause the game within roughly 5 seconds of loading in. Similarly, if I am lucky enough to be able to get into the zoo, once I do press play (to move animals into habitats or to other facilities) I get about 2 seconds of movement before everything freezes and the game crashes.

Here are the measures I’ve taken to try and get around this crash and the outcome of those methods.

  • All mods I am using and intend to use = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Removing excess mods = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Removing all animal mods = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Removing all mods = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the game = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Verifying local files = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Loading from autosave = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Loading from manual save = Game crashes when loading into the save file.
  • Increasing RAM to the PC maximum (32GB) = Will load into save file but crashes if I don’t press play within roughly 5 seconds. The game will crash within 2 seconds of pressing play.
  • Reducing the number of animals in the zoo = Game crashes when I press play.
  • Reducing the number of guests in the zoo = Game crashes when I press play.
  • Removing modded props from the map = Game crashes when I press play.
  • Closing the zoo = Game crashes when I press play.
I am genuinely at a loss for what could be behind this issue. The number of mods doesn’t seem to be an issue and they haven’t been an issue since I started playing modded Planet Zoo. The RAM also doesn’t seem to be an issue as it has improved the situation, albeit only slightly. The game installation and priority are set correctly so it can’t be that either.

I was thinking it could be a GPU/CPU issue but I can’t invest in a new one of either of those any time soon and if possible, I would like to avoid any more expense, especially if it is unnecessary.

Either way, any help and/or suggestions will be appreciated!

All the best,

J-Double U

Mods can cause many crashes. I would verify your game files on Steam which kinda "resets" the files to be the ones that are put in the game by Frontier. If an update comes out you have to remove them first, and a small update came out recently. Even if you think you've taken them all out this is the best thing to do, just in case.

I did do this after the update on Thursday and did it again for good measure on Friday but I've been having this issue since Sunday evening. I've just verified my game files via Steam again now and regrettably, the game still crashes as soon as I press play. I've tried with no mods, a few mods and all the mods I'm currently using and still in each instance I get that same crash. The game is fine when paused, it runs as smooth as silk but once I unpause the game I get only a few seconds of movement and then it crashes. I'm really not sure what the issue could be 🤔

My zoo is crashing today when a keeper places a red-crowned crane in a habitat. I tried with other animals and they all seem to be fine. There are no other animals in the zoo. I don't have any mods installed.

The issue is the corrupted save file, not the actual game files which is why verifying those won't solve this issue. At least that's my guess going from what you're saying about it being only that one specific save. If it really only happens when you open that one file it probably had a mod in it that broke with the last update and wasn't removed before said update dropped. In that case there really isn't anything you can do to fix it afaik because the save in itself got coruppted by it in some way.

That is why, even with all the amazing progress modders are making, it's still best to remove any mods that don't overwrite original files from the game before updates drop. Those files which overwrite existing game files are automatically replaced by the update and don't cause issues, new species e.g. aren't and can cause trouble when they aren't removed.

Hence why I decided to wait with adding those until support is officially over. As amazing as those mods are (marine animals o.o) to me they're not worth the risk of losing my zoos every time a new update comes out.

You're quite possibly right. I do have other saves of other zoos that are modded and use the same mods, and they are fine, it is just this one specific save and it doesn't make any difference whether I load from the autosave or the manual save, the end results are always the same. I can't think of any mods that are broken since they all work fine in my other zoos but your hypothesis is most likely correct, it is probably (and unfortunately) a save file corruption :/ I'll see what else I can do in the meantime but it is definitely looking like I'm either going to have to play the game in paused mode on that save file, which won't be very efficient since the habitats will be empty, or start a new zoo 😕 I'll keep you updated as to whether I find a solution or the cause of the crash! Thanks for the insight!

When you are in the startmenu of planet zoo and go to ' my zoo' s', you will find older saved files of the zoo that is crashing. What happens when you open (and let it run for a while) not the last save, but the one before the last?

When I open it and let it run for a while, it crashes after about 6 seconds, sometimes less.
