Zoopedia Bengal vs Siberian tiger size.

A little oddity I found in the zoopedia, it states that bengal tigers are larger than the siberian tiger, which just isn't true. Siberian or amur tigers are well known for being the largest of the tigers and the largest cats in the world (if you don't count weird hybrid species like the liger)

Does it really? I didn’t notice  the Amur tiger pair at my local zoo are huge, female is 600 and the male is 630 Bengals usually hang out in the 400- 500 pound and range..

Actually, the largest recorded bengal tiger was largest than the largest Siberian tiger. Both populations of mainland tiger are actually quite similar in size.

Actually, the largest tiger recorded was a male Siberian tiger, who weighted an incredible 935 pounds. Generally speaking, Amur tigers tend to be larger than their warmer climate cousins, but they can be very similar in size sometimes :). This is an adaptation actually and can be seen across the board, with many species, explained by Bergmann's rule. I believe the largest Bengal was not far off, being 8 hundred and something?

I was going off of length, not weight. Perhaps I should've specified. The longest Sibieran tiger was 3.09m, while the longest bengal tiger was 3.10m.

@Aero-Bubbles you are right about that they actually have a picture of him. I can’t say he looks like the healthiest most fit tiger ever but he is huge. There’s no doubt Siberian tigers get very big in captivity. In the wild they have large territories and exert a ton of energy trying to find prey. Plus deforestation and inbreeding is the reason for smaller wild size on average. My local zoo had 2 brothers both 450 pounds each and the viewing area is in the front. They would both walk opposite sides avoiding each other they got along but that’s how they paced back and forth but one was completely covered in mud and seeing this huge ten or more foot long tiger walk by was an amazing site I’ll never forget.

That’s one of them. Although this isn’t a personal pic of mine.

@Robbierotten not that it matters but this is a article from big cat diaries and it states that Amur tigers are the largest cat in captivity. Bengals have been proven to be bigger in the wild. The record Siberian is 845lbs vs 857 for the Bengal in the wild. So there is some debate as I mentioned the huge Siberian tiger that are still believed to roam Russia just aren’t there no more. I’m sure some may still be out there but few and far between.
