ZX Spectrum control method in ED

If you mean using keyboard only then yes. Quite a few have success using keyboard or keyboard and mouse. A HOTAS joystick seems to be the popular choice though.

I've completed the single player scenarios using just the original keys, for old times sake.

I'd not chose to play the game like that though.

My PS3 controller is much more usable.

How did you drive a zx spectrum? it was tiny and had no wheels. :p

Not really.

Theres another 4 to 6 movement controls you need that the spectrum version didn't.

Its not impossible to fly it like the spectrum, its the same sort of pitch and roll type thing, it will just put you at a quite a disadvantage if you tried. Docking would be much harder, but still possible.

Most of my docking is done without the minor thrusters. I just roll over and glide in, it is far more satisfying. I occasionally need a final adjustment though.

Mum used to call my rubber key spectrum a frisby, so I guess thats how you drive it :)

Best thing about the game for me so far is the fact that the combat and basic flight feels 99% the same as it did on the zx spectrum. Fortunately I have had 30 years of practice already for this game so Im a happy boy :)

I much prefer using keys to joystick and use the same key set up as I did on the speccy (with a few extras). Its all about personal preference. I found that I can change direction (respond) quicker if your controls are at your finger tips rather than having to push a joystick from side to side. But it takes practice to master the keys and if you are used to joystick maybe stick with that.

MY CONTROLS:

Left hand

S = Dive
X = Climb
A = Fire
W = Boost

Right hand

, = Left
. = Right
Space bar = Accelerate
/ = Decelerate
Right Shift= Zero speed
; = Enter and exit Hyperspace/Torrus Jump Drive

This way your fingers rest naturally on the main keys you need often and its just a quick flick up to boost or Hyperspace with one finger.

DOCKING

Right Hand

Num pad arrow keys = Boosts for docking
+ = up thrust
- = Down thrust

Left Hand

Beer holder and activation device = Left hand

Can I drive the ship like ZX Spectrum?

First you must travel to the Kempston system

I edited the title so it makes it a bit more clearer what the subject is. :)

I tried using the same setup (BBC keyboard controls were the same I think).

Problem I found was needing additional control of vertical/lateral thrusters and yaw. I needed about 7 more fingers.

Hence currently using xbox 360 controller + voice attack, and thinking about a HOTAS stick

Docking after an hour long journey
Making sure your best tape is in the cassette deck
Pressing record & play
Doing it again for a backup, adjusting the volume for luck
Not touching anything during the whole saving process and holding your breath...

Glorious times.
