25 Essential Terrestrial Birds META-WISHLIST

There is a very small amount of terrestrial birds in the game, or birds of that matter. So, I ask you, which habitat birds (you can write 25 or less) would you like to see in the game.

25 animals, no more, but can be less.
any birds that prefers to fly will not be counted in list, the kind of birds you can request are:
ratites, fowls, flamingos, grebes, ground pigeons, mesites, sangrouse, bustards, roadrunners, rails and cranes, sea birds, sunbittern and kagu, loons, albatrosses and petrels, penguins, storks, pelicans and herons, comorants and boobies, secretary bird, roadrunner, seriemas, ground hornbills, ground woodpecker, and ground parrots.
You can only make one list, and any second list won't be counted.
If you want to edit your list, reply your changes.
Your birds are in order from the ones you want the most and the one you want the least.
You may put no especific species (eg. writing duck) but this will be counted to the highest species on the wishlist of that matter (eg. mandarin duck).
No extinct species.

I know you said 25 but I think in terms of terrestrial birds we would get like 15 more Max. The main things we don't have yet are thin long legged wandering birds like the secretary or curlew. I think the most important though is the Kiwi to get for new Zealand rep.

It's tough to make a list without knowing how Frontier will handle birds going forward. The WE exhibit gives us a hint of a hint, but all it really shows is how they're handling bats.

  1. North Island brown kiwi.
  2. South Island takahe.
  3. Great white pelican.
  4. Himalayan monal.
  5. Mute swan.

I know you said 25, gonna give you 10
One of the problems I had with the aviary meta list was it meant too many of the same birds being requested.
1. Emu
2. Shoebill
3. Muscovy ducks
4. Rhea
5. Greater roadrunner
6. Superb Lyrebird
7. Snow goose
8. Black swan
9. Secretary bird
10. Ocellated Turkey

25 may be a tad bit too many to list, but I'll give it a shot (in no particular order)

1. Secretary bird
2. Emu
3. Rhea
4. Wild turkey
5. Greater roadrunner
6. Rockhopper Penguin
7. Grey Crowned Crane

20. Greater Prairie Chicken
21. Kori bustard
22. Gentoo penguin
23. White stork
24. Brown pelican
25. Roseate spoonbill

Okay, I lied, 25 might be a few too many haha. My list has a slight overrepresentation of semi-aquatic birds, but I think a lot of these could be sprinkled in with existing species for added interspecies enrichment.

I will support anything that points out the obvious lack of birds in this game, so I will join in. And it looks like we also quite agree on which types of birds should function in a habitat, so that is nice:

4. Northern Brown Kiwi
5. Secretary Bird
6. Southern Screamer
7. Roadrunner
8. Victoria's Crowned Pidgeon

Kea are not ground parrots and definitely prefer to fly.
They were listed in the example post, so that is why I went with them.

As far as I remember, I have only seen them move around on the ground and rocks in zoos, usually busy with some enrichment.
I would rather have them spending too much time on the ground than have them flying in a loop too much

They are aviary birds in every zoo and they fly quite often, usually from point-to-point. To be frank, if the kea is a habitat animal, then so is literally any other bird, since within the captive environment barely any of them actually fly all that much. I've worked with them myself (Willowbank Wildlife Reserve; both keas and scarlet/blue-and-gold macaws, and both were essentially the same in terms of overall behaviour).

OP is wrong to include them.

No doubt about that. A lot of the birds that can be listed here are usually found in aviaries, but I think it is more a matter of how believable they would behave in the game than how they would be housed in real life. Both with the habitat system and with the walk-through system it is possible to make it either realistic or unrealistic.

But I would still argue they spend more time on the ground than parrots like macaws. I don't think I have ever seen a macaw on the ground, but most keas I have seen have been moving around on the ground/rocks. A lot of the YouTube videos I can find of keas in captivity show the same. I'm not trying to question your experience with them or anything, but we just got different points of view on this. Aviaries for Keas tend to be rather small in Europe, this could maybe be why I and others on the forum do not see them fly often. On short distances walking or climbing from A to B might be easier than flying.

None of the options we currently have are ideal for a kea. But to me, a kea would be more believable moving around on the ground and on climbing structures and being able to use enrichment items (and hopefully some kind of point-to-point flight could happen in habitats over time, but nobody knows), than it would in an exhibit where it would be sitting still on a branch or only going from A to B or be constantly in the air.
To me, the exhibit system as it currently is seems more ideal for small birds, especially those living in bigger groups, birds that sit still a lot like owls and a lot of birds of prey, and birds that fly a lot.

I can easily find another bird to replace it, but I will let OP decide if that is necessary

No doubt about that.
Feel free to doubt, but there's no other way to put it than by saying you're still wrong. They are aviary birds, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Putting them anywhere else would just let them fly away. I also don't see the point in giving OP the final say, since OP is also wrong. It's the blind leading the blind.

The walkthrough exhibit is literally perfect for them, since in every zoo in New Zealand they are walkthrough aviary animals, and given that they are an endemic species here you can bet that our standard of care for kea is superior to most other countries. It's enough space for them to fly from point to point which is what they do in real aviaries, and the exhibit props could easily be designed around their 'hopping' behaviour as you put it.

Having them walk around on the ground like peafowl would be the stupidest thing ever.

The same can be said about Victoria's Crowned Pidgeon. You are fine with them in habitats.

We don't have official aviaries right now. We only got options to make stuff appear like aviaries if we like. The game allows us to keep bats open-air afterall.
In habitats the keas are likely to fly less than they would in real life. In exhibits, they are likely to fly more than they would in real life. What is preferred is a matter of taste. In the end, I don't mind them in exhibits too much, they could turn out better than expected. Just not my preferred option.

It is possible to disagree on this, without saying other people's opinions are wrong. Nobody is claiming keas can't fly, you don't need to prove it with a picture.

In most zoos in Europe, they aren't walk-throughs, both things can exist at once. And nobody is questioning how you take care of them in NZ.
But if a nuanced debate is impossible, then I would rather stay out of it.
