Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

A movie where people move in ludicrous accelerated manner a bit like the old Benny Hill Show. Or where ships just yeet things out at random, or themselves sometimes, and bounce over the terrain like giant balloons. Granted, it's on par with that same person imagining (and then directing !) that scene:

Welp, so far the patch seems good.. No instability, servers were good, plenty folks around. They've upped the server cap to 110 which seems to be working well too. Had a decent night in SC with the org guys floating around doing bits and bobs...a bit of Corsair mania all sporting new paint of course with it being the most recent addition besides the Drake Wheelbarrow, but it's proving popular for bounty hunting having lotsa huge gunz. Pilot controlled weapons are 4 x size 5's plus 2 x size 4's of your choice...that's a lot of dakka. There's also 2 manned side turrets and a co-pilot controlled rear remote. When a co-pilot is there, he can also take control of 2 of the size 5's in a turret mode from the front underslung cockpit/turret :)

Happy 10th Kickstarter Funding Birthday Star Citizen !! 🎂🎁🎈

Thank You! - End of Campaign Transition

November 19, 2012

The battle is over and we - PC gamers, space sim fans, WingNuts, Lancers and the rest - have won. You've not only met every goal we set, you've exceeded them. Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it.

The question is: what happens next?

Our intention has always been to make Roberts Space Industries YOUR site. It's not a public advertisement for the game; it's a private community for those who are making the game happen. We want your input on what we're doing and we want to share our plans with you; the occasional passer-by doesn't concern us. The plan was initially to immediately switch on a wall that would allow only you, our backers, to access features like the Comm-Link and the Spectrum Dispatches. Kickstarter has thrown something of a wrench in this plan: we can't change the site until the Kickstarter backers are integrated, which may take up to two weeks, otherwise we would be blocking thousands of backers from participating.

Updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.

What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. That's not true of everyone else: if you want to back Star Citizen and participate in this amazing community, you still can. but it's going to cost you a little extra as of now, and you aren't going to have as many extras (no lifetime insurance, for example.)

One issue which concerns us is what to do with the funding tracker. So we're going to throw the issue up to you: in two weeks, when the wall goes up, what do you want to see done with the tracker? Without the 'push' of the campaign it probably won't update very dramatically. but it's always possible it will go up enough to reach future stretch goals anyway. Should we keep it, remove it or put it somewhere else? We'll let the community decide.

We also have previously outlined the 'behind the screens' subscription plans available now. They're designed for users who simply want to give us a little extra support during the development - you're getting the whole story, regardless - but we will have some extra fun for our monthly contributors.

We can't thank you enough for everything you've done for this project. Please see the next update on 'The Pledge' for our promise to you. The next two years are going to be incredible for all involved and we're thoroughly happy that all of you are along for this exciting ride.

We need your support!

We know it may not look like this, but we do!

What you've seen was put together by a very small team over the past year. We felt that this vision needed to be shown rather than talked about so we invested our own money to build the technical and visual prototype that shows just how Star Citizen is going to push the limits of PC games.

Instead of taking this prototype to a publisher for a green light, we are cutting out the middleman and taking it to you.

You as the customer get the ultimate vote in whether we make this game. Your dollars are your votes and the better we do the more resources we’ll have to bring you a great game.

We have investors that have agreed to contribute the balance we need to complete this game as long as we can validate that there is a demand for a high end PC space game. By meeting or surpassing our target on Kickstarter you tell the world that you want a PC based Space Sim and allow us to make this game.

But we're offering more than just the chance to support the platform and genre.

As an early backer, you’ll also be getting a lot more than just the finished game.

For the people who pledge for their spaceship in the Star Citizen universe, you’ll be part of a select club that has exclusive access to early gameplay and behind the scenes development updates.

The people who pledge for their spaceships will get to test-fly them long before the general public. 12 months in, we will allow the early backers to play the multiplayer space combat Alpha, and then 20-22 months in they will get to play the Star Citizen Beta, adventuring around the huge open galaxy, well before the general public. We are going to limit our alpha slots to 200,000 as we want to stress test the game with real users, but will not be ready for the full load until we have finished Beta.

In addition, part of the money we are asking for is budgeted to maintain the Roberts Space Industries site with constant updates. Our goal is for the game’s website to be live from day one, constantly giving information about what’s happening in the galaxy even before the game is live, sharing interesting insights into the development process and canvassing the early backers for their opinions. Roberts Space Industries should be the first stop into the Star Citizen universe. When we say we want to involve the community, we really mean it!

Finally we are offering the pledge slots a discount to what the final digital price will be. Like Guild Wars 2, the basic game will be $60, but for the very early backers we are offering the entry tier at $30. But hurry! Slots are limited!

Our hope is that these benefits are compelling enough for you to pledge for your spaceship today.

Please support us, tell your friends and participate in the discussion. An amazing Interstellar adventure waits!

Blast from the past

"In the old model as a developer I would have captured 20 cents on the dollar," Roberts said. "Ultimately that means I can make the same game for a fifth of the revenue"

Since they have taken in north of 600 million to date, the game should now be valued at at 3 billion dollars!!!!

Yesterday, according to the tracker, they took in 1.6 million. Its insane that they can still drum up so many sales considering its been 10 years and how little they have to show for all this time and money.

Taking even longer to do the same for CR.
Amazingly enough the amounts invested in both projects are not too disimilar. Around 800 million in Theranos, over 500 millions allegedly in CIG.

Sadly the regulations and controls on fraud related to stock, securities etc are much more detailed and fleshed out than regulations and controls on crowdfund (i.e. SC´s store pledge items). As for the PU itself, well, that has been sold "as is" for a few years now, so hardly an issue there except one about the seller misrepresenting content, delivery dates and the fact that the PU is not a crowdfund item anymore but an actual released product.

That misrepresentation could be enough to trigger some regulatory or suit action at some point, who knows. But even then it would not have consequences as severe as Theranos.

I contributed a whole 18 bucks towards that sum too...bought some paints for the Corsair

There were also a metric ton of newbies who had already pledged for something or other from the store, ranging from the Wheelbarrow to the Corsair...global chat was full of them last night.

Most of our lot already had the Corsair...have had since it was in concept years ago. I used 40 bucks of store credit to buy the little Drake wheelbarrow as an LTi token...might keep it though since it's a tidy wee ship.

Perhaps in the ETF test servers...since they're testing PES, salvage and other stuff. The vid certainly looks more like ETF shenanigans :D

There isn't a general PTU running at the moment.

As for the live servers, there wasn't any queuing on the EU servers as far as I could see. I dropped in and out a few times but had no issues joining the org dudes when I logged back in. We were all on continuously until the early hours of this morning.

Logged back in this morning to check some stuff...found out I had a dupe Corsair at the ship terminal...the game had also stripped all the upgrades I had fitted to the original one I had and vanished the purchased paint jobs and bits. Had to do a full character reset to get the bits back...took the dupe out of the hangar and blew it up to get rid of it...so, the patch does have issues. Server side of course, but still issues. I don't want to be doing a char reset every time I log in to find dupe ships in the ship list and a load of missing gear :cautious:

Yeah footage is from prior 3.17.4 PTU going by the intro.

This is karmic punishment for putting paint in their mouths I say ;)

If anyone wants some salt to go with their IAE popcorn, Grumpy munched through most of my 'Blast from the Past' vids :)

I would note two things though. He cut out this amazing disco-funk intro, in case the music was copyright:

And after eviscerating CIG accurately and thoroughly throughout, he ends with a reminder that his patreon donations fund the ships he buys for reviews and giveaways ;)

Even in Holme's case, with such overwhelming evidence, it was not a sure thing she would be sentenced. It is notoriously difficult to prosecute let alone get any kind of conviction for white collar fraud cases.

For Theranos, the sheer number of extremely wealthy and powerful people that fell victim to it, including politicians, senators, former vice presidents, Larry Ellison himself (of Oracle fame), just might have something to do with the conviction.

In the case of crowdfunding there is not even adequate legal protection for non-delivery, let alone scope to convict for fraud.
