Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Currently I play 3.8 when using VR because using VR in 4.0 atm is too laggy on anything below a 3080 and I cant afford a 3080 at the moment.

As going forward the CGs and Story will be in 4.0 (Live), I would like to participate in VR and not just Flat screen.
Are there any plans to imporve VR in 4.0 so that its playabe at the advertised min specs ? which it currently isnt.

as a side note, Im not worried about my FC in 3.8 (legacy) as its got enough credits to last for 60 years. :)

Third-party tool maintainers everywhere: "Aaaarghaaaaaaaaghghaaaaaghghghaaaaaa!"

More seriously: I understand why, but will there be some obvious indication in the Journal files as to whether the 3.8 or 4.0 galaxy is being reported on, and if so, is that documented already?
first line of the journal
{ "timestamp":"2022-11-23T07:23:16Z", "event":"Fileheader", "part":1, "language":"English/UK", "Odyssey":true, "gameversion":"4.0.0.1450", "build":"r286858/r0 " }

gameversion = 4.x.xxx ---> live galaxy/profile
gameversion = 3.x.xxx ---> legacy galaxy/profile

correct ?

There is already gameversion[/ICODE} available in both "Fileheader" (not for CAPI-sourced journals) and "LoadGame" journal events. 'We' plan to make use of that going forwards. EDDN had a recent schema update to allow "gameversion" and "gamebuild" (because why not?) fields in the "header" component of all messages. All senders are strongly encourage to implement these ASAP. I won't try to pre-empty those who run the third-party sites (i.e. spansh, EDSM, inara.cz), but I'll be surprised if they don't choose to only accept Live (so gameversion >= 4.0) data going forwards. I'm personally awaiting some clarification with regards to CAPI data.

Separate CMDR profile between legacy/live.. does that mean we'll have our assets separated i.e. like ships, carriers, credit balance will become independent as well?

I'm sure what comes next will be very exciting, but the console news is very sad to hear.

We've got a great many console players who can't afford a PC for Elite, or simply don't want to switch - and are now locked out from affecting the same galaxy as the rest of us.
I know this seems like a foregone conclusion, but at least being able to work on the same goals seemed like a decent compromise.
Yep, the Squadron I fly with is multi platform and we back our own Player-based faction in the BGS. Think this will ultimately cause the console Cmdrs to hang up their flight suits for good.

Sad times, inevitable and half expected, but sad none the less

I'm sorry to hear about this. It was sadly inevitable that doing this would disrupt some of the shared experience across platforms, as you say.

So now my alts will have their own alts?

If i have a carrier now. When legacy mode is introduced, will i have to login to legacy and live to maintain my carrier balance and all ( i assume yes) ....otherwise i may login to legacy at some point in the future and find I've lost my carrier and such, correct?

I assume this means legacy / live mode is really not intended to be played effectively in parallel ...you pick one and stick with it more or less.

Any words about the materials gathering that is reduced almost to zero in Odyssey which we have been trying to get some attention to inform you since the Alpha?

This is all about the mechanisms which was a plausible scientific model on Horizons than it is on Odyssey. May I have an position about this, @Bruce G ?

I can provide deeper explanation to this subject, if you feel the need.

Thank you!

They will be separate along with everything else. You can choose to maintain both if you wish, but as you say we don't expect everyone to go to such lengths.

Will console carriers disappear from the live side of things when the split happens? Or, will they slowly rot since their owners will not be able to maintain them?

@Bruce G A Question: Will 3.8 Commanders have to log into 4.0 at least once to have their profile 'split' between universes, or will their CMDRs automatically exist, so that when they later get a PC capable of running 4.0, at least they will have any progress up to Update 14?

So, since we will have a separate cmdr profile in 3.8, I assume engineering materials gathered in 3.8 stay on that 3.8 cmdr profile that cannot be accessed from the 4.0 cmdr profile?
