Get it all out toinght...

In Australia we can go from having awesome internet to complete crap.. I am one of the lucky ones. But I still have issues due to this game being 100% online atm.

If you have intermittent internet, and some nearby neighbours who also play the game who have different internet access (unlikely I know, but still possible) and you are all mates together - there are possibilities open to you. Even a little multi-homed Atom box between you all could speed things up for everyone, if the ISP's allow and the poor thing doesn't get overloaded.

You've got a youtube channel with clips on it... how did you manage that with no connection? Not poking a stick, just curious :)

I know it's a stretch to read stuff, but give it a shot to understand. It's all I can really say. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=58997&p=1000982&viewfull=1#post1000982 I never said anything about my connection, though the phone comment probably sounded like that. ;) I normally read forums on my phone and I suspect others do as well :p

No worries, you just made mention that not everyone has a great connection. Assumed you lived with Grizzly Adams out in the wilderness there LOL

Connecting to a forum vs paying a high graphical game is a little bit different.

I totally understand people being upset if the developers where promising an off line game play then at the last hour changed it... Well I would be p!ssed too.

Let them vent and try our best to see both sides.

With luck it might not be as bad as they think its going to be.

We will soon know.

He's hopping they get it right for all of us.

I'm in Aus myself, I know all too well how crap our net is.

I totally get that people are upset. I can understand why. I quite possibly might be one in the future who is disheartened there is no offline mode.
I'm what many would call a FD fanboi. I really love Elite: Dangerous. I really loved the original. I enjoy playing it more than pretty much any game I've ever played on the computer. I will love it more I am certain, as background and content is added, events and comets appear, aliens eventually discovered, ship strolls, station walks and planets landed on.
As I live in a rural area I am aware of the plight. We used to live outside town and had to make a special arrangement to have dial-up upstream (18Kbps) with satellite downstream (350-750Kbps) which never dropped below 500ms pings. Not very great for any type of twitch gaming. Once we moved into town we got a blazing 6M down (which we split between 3-5 PCs (at any one time)) so I totally can relate. I have friends who have to use cellular connectivity (even worse in most cases).
I'm very sorry for those for who the lack of a solo offline mode is a deal breaker.
\Not much I can say to add to that. And my being sorry undoubtedly means nothing to those in that situation.

Now, on a different subject entirely, to the CMDR I accidentally rammed who interdicted me and died earlier tonight it was unintentional (but very funny - to me). All I could think of at that moment was, "I guess you don't have the guts to do that again".

Stop being apologists. You are only making it easier for developers to get away with things these days. If more people were negative about things they actually spent money on, the world would be a better place.

Anyways... FDev soured me with their development style a while back and no amount of apologies will make me see them in a different light. I only tolerate their games because they have the best Oculus Rift DK2 experience out there. Once someone comes up with a better experience, I am jumping ship.

Glad you had fun, I spent most of the evening feeling like I misled people.

Tim, Without knowledge of the change you were not misleading anyone. You accurately relayed the expectation as you knew it to be reported. Don't beat yourself up over something you had no control over.

Looking at the situation as I understand it I can accept the decision.
I think it would have been better for it to have been disclosed earlier but it's spilled milk now that can't be put back in the cow.
No amount of words or emotionally charged posts will.
If I understand correctly it would require a completely separate or different game in addition to the online game or would, quite possibly, potentially ruin the online game. The online game was always the vision and the offline added (IMHO) with honest intentions of it being doable, else I doubt FD would have added it to the FAQ.

Games are a balancing act of trade offs and no game is everything to all players. I doubt any game made has come into being without losing or changing elements of itself at some point in its development. I would reckon a guess this is not the last issue in E: D's growing pains... but I can hope.

Wow... that other thread is a train wreck of hurt feelings. I totally understand why, but people seem to have forgotten that any sort of investing is a gamble. I wasn't a backer, but I would've been if I'd heard about it last year and I have no doubt I'd be at least a little upset if I had. However, having participated in several Kickstarters I can say this; FD could've taken the giant wad of cash y'all gave them and delivered a piece of crap that might've died in the first Beta phase, or even never have made it out of Alpha. They didn't do that. Instead they created a truly massive game that delivers the full space sim experience (albeit online only).

Folks need to put themselves in the shoes of the fine ladies & gentlemen at FD. Do you really think they wanted to do this? Do you think for a single moment that they wanted to fail to deliver exactly what many of the backers wanted? Of course not. Earlier today one of them even said that they did not approach this decision lightly and yet his words fell on deaf ears.

For myself I'm saddened to hear that so many CMDRs are willing to just throw this game away and demand their money back (even some who will not be impacted by the online/offline issue). Games like ED need people who are that passionate about the game world. Players like myself and many others need people with that level of devotion & commitment to stick with ED for the long haul.

I don't know, but it seems to me that this "all or nothing" attitude seems out of place for people so passionate about a game they invested so much money & time in.

That's my 2 cents. Take it or leave it.

Fly safe CMDRs. No matter which game you end up in.

Planetary Annihilation faced this kind of scrutiny as well by having all modes require server connections, last I checked (but haven't verified), UberEnt released a patch for a totally offline mode after months of bashing. They did constantly announce they would try to support it or get it patched in and received tons of flak and negativity from communities. I love that game, but found myself annoyed and playing SupCom 1 and 2 more.

Here, I find myself loving Elite and hoping it will someday have a true offline mode. But thankfully, if that doesn't happen, I'm generally connected to the Internet...but considering Elite plays so well on my cheap Dell 3540 laptop, I would like to have a solo mode for when I travel out of the Internet's grasp on my technology. Dissapointed? Yes. Surprised? No.

I think Frontier will come to their senses and resolve this, nobody can ignore the public, their customers for too long and stay in business. Especially if their doors staying open relies on the success of one product. That's just my opnion tho.

UberEnt tried to, let a lot of folks down and had to cancel their next kickstarted game mere days into it because of little interest and belief in them (they claimed their end not being able to maintain it...which is kind of direct on the funding and backing from fans).

If not, well, I have Evochron Mercenary which has been my go-to sim for years, and is still amazing. Seamless offline/online, no server connection required, seamless planetary landings, etc. Its age and indie-ness show compared to ED and SC, but its flight model is awesome and super challenging, and feels similar to ED. So at least I have options there should I lose Internet and wanting to get my Space Sim on.

Let's home that Elite Dangerous gets the patch to appease those that would like a totally offline experience. I for one would love it as an option even if I chose online 100% of the time. I love the game so far in beta form, and can't wait to see its future. I hope its worth continuing to support for years, because honestly I don't enjoy SC much yet and EvoMerc is great but ED has me addicted. :D

Cheers folks.

No, from what I've read on that thread, it's those with poor internet connections that needed an offline mode that want a refund. They backed the game in the hope of it. Others, like myself, are happy with the online game, it's just that the option that was there to play it offline and have that part of the game remain, even if the online was removed for some reason, has now been taken away.

Yeah. People have to realize people live without the internet in modern times. To me it would be like living without water and electricity, but you must respect that not all people have access to modern amenities.

I challenge everyone to imagine what it would be like to live without the internet.

Then imagine yourself trying to play Elite Dangerous. See it doesn't work. Imagine if you had been a fan since 84. Imagine what its like not being able to play the game now.

Yer I started to read some of it and had to baily out to much pain.

What's bugging me is why are they choosing to do it this way?

It has been bugging me how are they going to make this galaxy.. with so many systems..

Maybe they intend to use a galaxy making system like "no man's sky"

Don't quote me as I am no expert but my very little understanding is that the fist person there the program will generate the system, and so that will need to be uploaded.

Just putting it out there ... crazy idea ... but they must have some reasons.

Some people run through life desperately seeking stuff to be offended by. Elite isn't an exception.

Personally I think the developers have done a pretty good job. I'd rather have a polished game with fewer features than a feature-crammed bug fest.

Cheers, Phos.

So true.
