Can human players defend against Thargoid invasion of systems

I ask that because the Brazilian League of Pilots Player faction home world Njorog has been taken over by Thargoids and all factions destroyed, the orbitals blown up and the system abandoned. (0 human pop).

As far as we can tell, they were given no option to defend it.. This was their original system, and in traditional BGS play they weren't able to be retreated from there.. except the Thargoids just did, and without a fight. The players from that faction found out after the Update their home world was nuked. I had thought I had seen in Obsidian Ant's video preview that players would be given a chance to defend systems from Thargoid takeover.

Yes give us super weapons :D

As I stated in a previous thread somewhere.
Dedicated BGS players who enjoy this part of the game may just bail. Potentially years of work down the drain, could be supremely demoralising.

Flimley

The initial Thargoid strike seems to take out a bunch of systems without possibility to defend. Very tough luck if it takes out yours, since <1% of the bubble looks likely to be hit that way, but if you survive that and most factions will (especially those on the side opposite the Stargoids) there's more chance.

After that, the interface suggests that both defence of further systems and reclamation of existing systems are possible - though at this stage it's hard to say how difficult either would be - so probably with sufficient effort they can retake Njorog and rebuild the stations.

You just know there's a BGS planner somewhere going "how can we lure the Thargoids to attack our enemies / cut a nice border that can't be expanded across to keep them away?" right now.

I expect more mechanics to be explained or confirmed by FDEV as time goes by (e.g. today's livestream). What I can read from this is that you can start even now destroying Thargoid craft in that system, to push the recapture attempt (the green bar) and if it reaches the end, the system will go into post-Thargoid recovery where out Brazilian friends can start repairing stations.

Not sure though how it would play in the grand scheme of things, with the Maelstrom so close. It could be that afterwards, they would face a constant attack and the system would be a continuous battleground...

So far the galmap progress bars have not moved in any of the affected systems, I wonder if they're even working. Or it's just that much effort required near a Maelstrom that even at peak activity (right after the update as everyone goes check it out) it isn't enough to make any visible progress.

Very hard to say. With 29 systems near M1 affected - and sure, some of those were uninhabited to start with and probably not anyone's priority - plus other activities like checking out the Maelstrom itself, panicking about the other seven, etc. effort is going to be very unfocused for now. (Then throw in seven more...)

They've probably also set the thresholds high to see what happens and then move them down, because that's easier than the other way and it'd be no fun if they accidentally set them an order of magnitude too low and we had it contained by the end of the week.

(I'm thinking about the Colonia Engineer upgrading: on its original balance, if we'd thrown a [Colonia] CG's worth of fully-coordinated effort at it we could have had an upgrade a week. It took quite a bit longer than that, for various reasons, even after they took about 98% off the original difficulty. So guessing where to put the thresholds is much harder than for CGs)

I get that part.. but I think most players are hoping they're going to be given the chance to defend against the Thargoids invasion and try to stop them from destroying everything in a system they're invading.. rather then just wake up one day to find everything auto-destroyed and players put in a position of trying to recapture it; (and as I said, I thought Obsidian Ant said in his video that would be how things would play out).

Shows how much Youtubers know 😜
Not sure a single faction will ever hold off the onslaught until new weapons are found and also not everyone in the game is into pew pew.
Best to load up the FC and head out.

Good questions. So far as I can tell there isn't a concerted effort, all efforts are spread across the 29 systems.

The silver linings here:
Your system isn't a maelstrom system. So there is hope.
Once your system is reclaimed, you have a great adventure story to tell.

We just don't know enough yet how to make any of that happen.

well, we're going to find out soon enough. LYR space has been invaded with these new arrivals.. It APPEARS players will be given the chance to repel the invasion, if I read this map right.

If you spent a huge amount of time impacting the BGS ...just thinking about that should be demoralizing. Why? Why would you invest that much effort that you would be upset about losing in a game that makes that effort cyclic and impermanent unless you continually repeat the same activities to maintain it for something that really doesn't change the game? If you're not demoralized after spending months or even years doing that and the game being effectively exactly the same as it was before you did any of it, then i dont think the thargoids burning your systems and all that that they're doing is going to demoralize you. Those people will be fine.

edit: it will be fun to see if Fdev thought about how any of this impacts powerplay. I'd be genuinely surprised if they did. Maybe we'll finally see powers collapse as they lose too many control systems to the thargoids and such.

Today's twitch video they say they have something they are doing about player bgs stuff affected by the war.
Beyond that I don't know because I said something derogatory about AXI and got booted.

Hey, we may have inadvertently helped your group but not in the system pictured. Fighting in a system owned by the Brazilian League of Pilots has a smidge of purple now on the invasion bar.
We were in HIP 23716

Not my group. I was using them as an example :)
This is the system a lot of the AX groups are focused on.. also shows progress bar moving.. though slowly.
