Did FDev really say like it or lump it about the Thargoid War?

What happened to forging your own way through the galaxy, doing what you want to do?

I have been away for a few days and have yet to launch the game since Update 14 so I'm just basing this on stuff I have seen and read since it dropped.

I don't have any issues with FDev upping the ante with this all out Thargoid offence - what I do have a problem with is a couple of comments I've seen - basically if the community don't fight off this attack the Bubble will burn and Colonia isn't safe so don't think you can escape there.

I've tried AX combat - managed to kill some scouts but every single time I've battled an interceptor (maybe five or six attempts) I've been taken out quite easily, not even coming close to winning. Now, I know my ship build could be improved by Guardian tech and engineering but the thing is, I'm not interested in AX combat, it's not for me.

And, yes, I'm aware there are other ways to support the war effort - refugee transporting I believe is the main one but what if I'm just not interested in the whole war?

I'm sure lots of commanders are getting stuck in and are enjoying the battles - that's great, glad they've got stuff they enjoy. I play Elite for relaxation purposes these days, mainly exploration, mining and trading. War isn't very relaxing, not sure I'm feeling this forced narrative.

Sorry, bit of a ramble. TLDR - I'm not interested in fighting a war and don't appreciate FDev saying I have to or else.

From the sounds of it, you do have an issue with FD upping the ante.

We've had 8 years of FD basically controlling the state of the game and largely unwilling to effect serious changes.

Now, at least according to FD, they are saying if players don't do stuff, stuff will change.

Now, don't get me wrong, i'm somewhat skeptical. I remember their statements about powers rising and falling, but this time, i guess, players will fight the Thargoids, so FD are are "safe". The future is already clear. Players will do enough to ensure the Thargoids are beaten back and life in the bubble goes on.

Which is a shame in a way. Because we will never get to see if FD are really willing to let the bubble burn.

For those that don't want to fight the Thargoids and don't like the idea of the bubble burning there is the legacy version of elite dangerous. One of the reasons it was disconnected. Nothing changes. You now have two galaxies. One at war. And one in stasis.
Hope we can't mess things up by jumping from 3.8 to 4.0 Odyssey and back.
Wouldn't want to confuse Inara.

THere is no confusing inara, inara has rejected legacy support, direct on first page

Inara now supports the Live galaxy version only

so you can't smeg it up as all legacy data is being ignored and rejected...
Inara wont run legacy data... Live game stayed on original server farm and names... Legacy is the copy and uses new domain names to get data for web sites so site can just ignore legacy very easy...

......but what if I'm just not interested in the whole war?
I'm honestly not really in to the idea of 'contribute to the war effort or the bubble will burn' either (I only did AX combat 1 weekend to get the Cyclops Bobblehead)...... but.... ED is intended to be a Simulator... so as a simple miner/trader who mostly just likes to do canyon running... and like many BGS people who are just looking to fortify their areas... Real-Life hits and your home is involved in war. So in the sense of 'Simulation', I guess we got some choices to make. I'm still on the fence about my feelings (but I can't deny it looks amazing!)
(edit) By 'choices' I mean 'fight the war'... or take advantage and become a criminal... or run to the black and become a survivalist... There is absolutely no way I'm quitting ED-Live!!!

Into a Evac ship and do some Evac work... No combat needed...

Sorry, bit of a ramble. TLDR - I'm not interested in fighting a war and don't appreciate FDev saying I have to or else.

1. I don't believe any key player systems are involved in the war. Player starter zones, engineering systems, etc.
- Perhaps someone could identify any key systems that are effected.

2. As long as a player doesn't travel through an effected system I believe they can ignore the whole Thargoid story.

3. I have a strong suspicion that the outcome is predetermined and players are along for the ride.

The Thargoids are now controlled by an in-game AI, and make their own decisions. If players do nothing, the bubble will burn, and after that Colonia.

Will FDEV let it go that far? Who knows?

That's a fair assessment I reckon.

My PC account is actually in Colonia at the moment so I don't need to worry about it *just yet.

Maybe I will head back to the Bubble to help out, I don't know, we'll see. I just didn't care for the way it was presemted.

Actually for more context I should have added that I'd had a few months away from the game and just came back a week or so ago to hear about these Stargoid things, Update 14 and my console account getting put out to graze on the Legacy pastures.

Well, the passenger evacuation missions are good to get high-grade mats. The pew-pew stuff is pretty much useless for solo players, because everything is like 1000x OP. But it is a glorious sight to look at, that's a given.

I'm sure that plenty of people do AX combat now, but still the progress meters are crawling along. Seems like the whole war content is one huge grind all over again. I guess I will not be doing much of it and instead enjoying the bubble while it lasts.

There's a difference between "the community needs to fight the war" and "any individual player needs to fight the war".

Obviously if absolutely everyone decided not to fight the Thargoids, then in some years time (the bubble is really big!) that might be a problem because the bubble would be destroyed. And it's reasonable for Frontier to mention that this is a possibility so that people don't think "Ah, they'd never really let Meene burn, we don't need to defend it, we can focus on protecting HIP 124Blah instead". But total destruction won't happen - AX CGs have always been reasonably popular, there's lots of big squadrons which specialise in AX work, there's lots more players who do a bit from time to time, if a BGS group gets a Thargoid Invasion to their preferred faction they'll probably fight back on that occasion even if they normally don't do that much AX fighting. Frontier know not everyone will get involved and aren't expecting that.

Equally if absolutely everyone decided to fight the Thargoids the war might be over rather quickly. Frontier know that won't happen either.

A good thing to remember might be Distant Worlds 2 - massive exploration expedition, largest fully-player-organised event in the game by a big margin, took several thousand players away from the bubble for months. It took place at the same time as some of the initial Thargoid raids on the bubble after 2.4, and before it happened, there was a lot of talk about how the bubble was doomed because everyone was going on DW2.

It made no difference whatsoever. There was a minor dip on a couple of indicators of player activity, barely visible if you knew what to look for - and a more obvious rise in long-range exploration activity, of course - but if (somehow!) DW2 had been held in secret and they'd not told anyone else that they were going? No-one would have noticed they were gone.

You can carry on doing what you want - so long as you stay away from the front lines, at least - and the players who enjoy that sort of thing can do what they want and get stuck in. Where that settles out to is likely going to be a rather smaller bubble than now - but there's no risk that no-one will fight and it'll be wiped out, and no risk that everyone will fight and the war will end after a month.

(And there are some hints that exobiology might help - longer term - to defeat the Thargoids, so maybe explorers can do something as well without going anywhere near the battle)

At the moment the systems affected are all on the edges of the bubble, and key systems tend to be somewhat further in, so nothing yet. Most important system hit so far: one incredibly unlucky PMF's home system. Still, they've got another hundred, they'll be okay.

Given that the initial impact of each Maelstrom takes out 10-20 systems with no way to fight back, they kind of had to aim them a little away from anything too vital. One of them is pretty close to Meene if it decides to go that way.

It's a 50/50 marketing shot. You'll possibly bring new people excited about the alien fighting into the game and rejuvenate older players into the gameplay, while you anger some who never were interested in that form of gameplay that could possibly force its way into their area. It's business.

I don't know if you got a chance to watch the Frameshift Live interview with Tom (think his name is Tom... the lead designer)... Anyway, from just listening to him I get the feeling like he is REALLY, REALLY deep into the 'Elite Dangerous' experience.... I feel like I can blindly trust that he is cooking up something good that we will all like regardless to our concerns entering. I know Derin had an interview also but I didn't get to watch his part, so I'm not saying he's not as deep into it as Tom... I'm just referencing the enthusiasm that I was able to witness, and I liked it.
