Does open mode pay more? Or does it just enable pvp?

I don't know the advantages of open play.
It really depends on your mindset.

It presents extra risk and challenge, and overcoming challenge is a reward.

It also affords the opportunity to approach challenges in a way that you can’t against npc’s. I’ve saved a newbie by talking to the person that was threatening them (in an RP way) as an example.

It gives you more chance to meet people.

And ultimately the ED galaxy is supposed to have other living breathing independent pilots flying around in it.

Well, being young and naive I thought that now with the Thargoid war, that would reshuffle the deck and open opportunities for spontaneous cooperation in AXCZs, so I gave it a shot.

Turns out, people are still as crap as ever, loitering in war systems to interdict and destroy stricken AX ships returning from combat. Nothing to gain from it, just to grief players.

Un be f'ng lievable.

With commanders like that out there, I guess humanity deserves to be eradicated.

Back to Group, then.

There's a whole other thread for this, don't make me get my bingo card out 😜

I don't know the advantages of open play.

The ability to encounter other player characters without them having to be in the same private group.

Turns out, people are still as crap as ever, loitering in war systems to interdict and destroy stricken AX ships returning from combat. Nothing to gain from it, just to grief players.

Defeating one's enemies, or diminishing their capacity or will to wage war, is certainly a gain and not everyone wants humanity to win.

The game and it's railroady plot can provide certain incentives, but it cannot dictate CMDR goals.

With commanders like that out there, I guess humanity deserves to be eradicated.

So what's the problem?

I spent the evening flying around Tarach Tor in my baitboat basically spoiling for a fight and checking everyone that passed through.

I saw one other cmdr that had an interdictor fitted at all. Everyone else was going full-bore for the relief effort. I ended up pulling some wanted NPCs just on the principle that I'd come all the way out there and I'd be damned if I wasn't gonna make something explode.

“Does open mode pay more?”

No, same galaxy, same missions and opportunities.

“Or does it just enable pvp?”

These six words reveal a mindset. While it does enable PVP it also enables collaboration.

I would request this thread closed now before it descends into the same sort of “he said she said” threads that a few of your others have. You seem to have a knack for selecting toxic subjects. If you use search you’ll realise this and then if you want to continue to cause friction carry on, otherwise it’s easy to avoid.

"Or does it just enable pvp?"

PvP is always enabled. Some glitches in the past with unwanted "visits" (presumably, never happened to me) demonstrated that this might be even true for Solo mode. It is just so that some PGs have rules while others don't. And Open mode is basically defined by being void of all rules.

I don't know the advantages of open play.

The modes are just means to filter players out.
Solo - filters every other player out, so it's basically a single player mode, but in a galaxy affected by everyone
Private Group - filters out every player that is not a member of that PG
Open - No filters except Block, which is a player custom filter which allows one to remove certain players from their direct gaming experience

That's just it.
Modes do not enable pvp, they just enable multiplayer.
Which multiplayer can be collaborative or antagonistic.

Now, multiplayer does have some advantages over Solo:
  • wing trade bonuses, that's a small percentage trade bonus for the wing members
  • combat bonds and bounties are given to all wing members present in the instance, so it may be eventually used as a credits Powerlevel mean
  • shared missions, pretty much the same as above since one can take a wing mission, complete it solo, then invite people in wing and share the mission and give them free credits (or it used to work like that, not sure if FDev didnt fix this behavior)
  • AX CZ gives credits to anyone that touches the Goids, no matter if the player is affiliated to the wing or not.

But all those advantages are valid for both PG and Open, it's a multiplayer thing, not an Open thing.

So, to conclude - the main advantage of Open over PG is the fact that it allows one to meet and play with or against perfect strangers in a free for all setup.

While the PG is usually used to play with friends or with guildies or to get players to play along in a certain format/ruleset
For example: Mobius PG was (is) a PG dedicated to PVE activities and in this PG all PVP is forbidden.
Same for Fleetcom although this PG is used mostly by explorers.
However, being in a PG doesnt mean one cannot engage in PVP. People may join a PG only with them 2 in it, just to have an uninterrupted pvp experience
Or, as it happened multiple times in the past, gankers have infiltrated into certain PG like Mobius or Fleetcom and murdered members of the said PG

The problem with the PG is the fact they have certain size limits, they usually have a rather complicated acceptance procedures which takes time.
So it's a very artificial and limiting environment.

There is no additional benefit.

Open mode only does one thing: to have your ship destroyed after 5 minutes because of the player on duty (insert preferred pejorative term here) with 6000 hours of gameplay and equipped with Anaconda G5 in everything, and who finds destroying ships a lot of fun of those players who decided not to go through engineering hell.

If your ship doesn't have G5 engineering at all and is armed to the teeth so you can defend yourself against anything, don't touch PVP.

I don't buy for one picosecond that the players in question actually have in-character motivations. Their CMDR avatars are humans so making humans lose the war means they're destroying themselves bc there will be nowhere for them to go. There is no "this is what my character would do", it's just griefing, the players are griefers whose only motivation is to ruin other players' fun, no more, no less.

Your loss, not theirs.

The galaxy is a big place and we have ships that are largely self-sufficient.

Personally, I think the galaxy would be more fun if humanity lost, and my character, while not going out of his way to aid Thargoids, isn't opposing them either, and will certainly take advantage of any opportunities the conflict presents to harm his human foes (who are still far more of a pressing threat, and will be even if the bubble is reduced to a wasteland).

In Open we have the ability to interact. That can be vs. co-op or just a passing o7.
Any extra payout or risk comes as result of that interaction.

"Open Play ONLY" argument rant incoming... 🍿;)

There is no argument for Open only.
ED is not able to support any open only type of gameplay.
Not at network level not at assets level

Everyone playing in Open, at choke points, should be able to notice that now, when Open is still used by a minority of players.
But in a forced Open environment, the gaming experience would be quite tragic.

Most of my gameplay this weekend was to go in and out of AX CZ instances trying to get a decent one, temporarily blocking random players while trying to get better instances, or fighting in bugged instance due to boredom. 🤷‍♂️
Overall it wasn't a nice experience at all - even for my highly tolerant mindset.

my gut feeling is you are correct.... however that said, watch just about every disaster movie / TV series and they do tend to show up humanity as a completely self destructive species unable to see beyond "jam right now and screw tomorrow".

for example take walking dead..... really who tends to be the threat for the most part? it isn't really the zombies it is humans, and yet you would think with 99% of humanity wiped out there is a huge over abundance of resources, it would be far easier just to work together instead of trying to destroy.

ok that is fiction, but look at the fossil.fuel industry in the real world. they have known for sure about climate change destroying the planet since the early 1980s and yet they still went out of their way to create doubt on it and force.their polluting money making agenda even tho they knew it was ultimately going to ruin a lot of people's lives.

so sure, I play in a more positive PG where members of the PF don't fight each other.... but Open may not be that far removed from reality tbh. the only thing open is lacking is consequences for the murder hobos..... it is unlikely the neegans of the world would knowingly be forgiven and let into other people's territories voluntarily.
(talking Season 6 Neegan I won't go further than that for spoilers)

The argument has been advanced elsewhere that, like other activities, you should be engineering and outfitting your ship to be less effective at its primary role, be able to cope, survive and escape the gankers. If you get destroyed in such a situation, then it is your own fault.

Needless to say, I hope the Thargoids decide to engage the gankers as their ships are not fitted for AX combat much!

In open you can get help from random strangers. Other players generally add to the experience (positive and negative).

With stuff like wing mission shares it can be a lot more profitable (this can be done in group too), and some aspects of the game are more easily accomplished when other Cmdrs are around.

But then there are things like pad blocking & stale instances, so swings and roundabouts. In amongst all of that there is the possibility of attacking other Cmdrs & being attacked, which tends to become the focus for conversations like these.
