The Thargoid War: System States Clarifications

Maybe the targets are so high because the current invasion systems are so close to the maelstrom, a bit like undermining in powerplay.

Hi Ned,

I understand these elements could be clearer and we're currently looking at improving how we present that information. The attack cycle refers to the number of days remaining in the week to win back the system. The time to invasion marks the total number of days until the system is lost.

Invasions last a number of weeks. Each week represents an opportunity to complete the progress bar which results in the system being successfully defended. If this is not achieved, progress is reset as a new attack cycle begins. This repeats either until the invasion time runs out and the system is lost or the progress bar is filled in a given week and the invasion is repelled.

Bruce;
One of the biggest player groups just called it quits to contributing to the war because of this kind of really stupid decision.
Any thoughts? Responses? How will FDev deal with a massively demoralized player base that was nearly non-existant due to Odyssey's Launch?

From the Operation IDA Discord:

Hi all,

Due to the information released today, making it clear all system progress will be reset every 7 days, we have made the tough decision to discontinue tracking and no longer focus on support and relief efforts for HIP 23716, or any other thargoid war systems.

While we encourage everyone to take part in the new Thargoid war content as they see fit. We do not feel we can advise our members to spend their time and effort on this dangerous hauling. After being given a timer showing 7 weeks, a vast portion of the community put their all into a single system, managing to move the bar to around 40% complete, yet all that work is now set to be erased.

Until more is known, and the expectations and requirements changed or at least made clear we will only be focusing on CG work when available.

To everyone who worked with us to move cargo and complete missions in HIP 23716, to all the AX and rescue commanders, we thank you for your exceptional efforts this last week.

I miss Fett Li, communities that quit at the first hurdle aren’t worth being in.

As many others have said now, fully resetting progress is an extremely bad and demoralizing system for a fun video game. I would VERY MUCH like to see this thargoid war not just feel like a big "doomsday thursday" every week, and I would like to see the system feel less artificially paced by server ticks.

Here's the thing, if the progress bar were to not reset every week, it would still take AXI and the larger community over two weeks to save HIP 23716, and there is always a chance that the thargoids could simply invade again. This victory would come at the cost of a dozen other systems in that time. The Thargoids would still advance their campaign in that scenario and severely threaten human space. This still plays HEAVILY into humanity being largely outmatched until the narrative can naturally shift.

On top of all this, does it even matter that we are fighting in CZs at stations or ground ports? Do we simply lose stations because we didn't win the system in that week, or did we not battle at a specific station enough? I have personally destroyed like... 200 thargoid interceptors above Farkas AND ferried hundreds of refugees from Farkas... and we are more than likely still going to lose it.

Don't get me wrong, the 5+ billion credits I've earned this week are cool and all, but... it's not like I can buy a power regulator with credits, so after a certain point I'm going to just feel like I'm wasting my time.

How much activity occurred last week to hit 40% (I think I heard?) in HIP 27316? One system … do we even have enough players to more-than double those efforts and target a different system each week? And then sustain that?

I mean, I was already working on the basis that humanity is supposed to “lose” at this stage - at least on the macro level, with so many systems being targeted we’d never save all of them. But I assumed it would be possible to save a few!!

With all our efforts being reset, does that mean that all the people I rescued get teleported back to the stations under attack? Wow it would suck to be them as I'm not going to rescue them a second time. The pay vs risk is abysmal. Has anyone checked to ensure that Fdev are not Thargoid shape shifters in human form (Devgoids?).

Whelp. Time to move to the middle of nowhere space, i guess.

Op-Ida Management is now effectively on strike sitting this one out in the most important crisis in game history. What a catastrophic disaster F-dev. Challenging but possible with skill and planning: This is what makes Elite Dangerous worth playing to me. Can't take on that Thargoid? Check out our community AXI for a tested build that can give you a fighting chance. Want to be good at mining? We have a community IMU that can show you what you need to get the most out of your ship. Need to get somewhere? Colonia perhaps? We have a community FCOC that would be glad to help out. We have someone going there next week. Community is what keeps this game going. And now the bubble will burn despite heroic efforts by all the communities rallying support. Challenging but possible keeps people interested. What you have set us up for is failure. I did my part in Matshiru rescuing 8,641 people helping PDES. The total effort of rescues in that system is 210,847 this week. Matshiru has a population of 1,206*. Sigh. The community only managed to move the bar 3 places and that is with over 5000 Thargoid kills #. Unless the Thargoid war mechanics are set in a way where the communities can make a meaningful difference in the war might as well just turn the game servers off now forever and say the Thargoids won. What ya gonna do?

Well I can't say that I'm surprised that FDev took something that should have been fun and engaging and tied it to a stupid mechanic that makes it another pointless grind. It almost feels like FDev is trying to kill the game and pin the blame on the player base for not working hard enough. Bruce I sincerely hope you guys rethink this decision.
