Thargoid War: Options

The effort to repel the Thargoids at Hip 23716 failed spectacularly.
Where do we go from here?
Is it worth doing anything with the invaded systems yet or should we concentrate on the Alert systems to keep the 'goids contained?

Good question. Even if HIP 23716 was successful, there are dozens of systems in danger.

The Thargoid front will grow, if each system claimed by them can threaten more surrounding systems then as the Thargoid front grows so will the number of systems threatened.

Plus... the Maelstroms can move, we don't know if they will move again. If they do they could easily create more incursions elsewhere.

If the Orthrus is a key to the Thargoids expansion then it makes the most sense to focus on that. Slow expansion and try to halt the front lines. Trying to hold a single system this early in the war was never going to work, it was mostly an experiment and a humanitarian effort to save civilians trapped there.

With the rest of the Maelstroms arriving soon we'll have billions of people in danger and in need of aid. That should be the primary focus for everyone, save as many as possible while Thargoid tactics are analysed and the results of Orthrus hunting are collected.

Stay strong. Don't loose hope. Encourage your community to join the war either evacuating civilians from danger zones or joining the AXI in fighting Thargoids on the front lines. Those daring enough to scout Thargoid held territory may gather vital intel.

For all the Orthrus that have been destroyed, there was not a single notch of progress in any Alert system. I don't think they have any relevance at all to the invasion, just an interesting easter egg for players to find.
Better to concentrate on the listed tasks (evacs, supplies, missions) rather than spending hours looking for randomly spawning NHSS threat 4s.

That would imply that unpopulated Alert systems - where there's nothing but combat available on the activity list - are entirely unwinnable.

I'd agree there's no reason to necessarily assume that Orthrus kills count more than any other Thargoid kill available in Alert systems, though.

I didn't mean that combat was worthless in those systems, just that the Orthrus doesn't appear to have the increased importance that many people seem to be giving it.

I do have a sneaking suspicion (yet to be proven with hard numbers) that the higher grade interceptors are worth significantly more and that's why NHSS threat 8s are common in the unpopulated systems, since they don't have CZs to reliably spawn them.

It needs sciencing doesn't it?

The issue with Orthorus for me is fine you destroy one to stop it collecting it's probe but another spawning somewhere else in the system and the Thargoids get their intel anyway. To really find out it might need a HIP 23716 type effort to stop as many Orthorus as possible throughout the week?

The odd one killed - as reported so far - is unlikely to influence the invasion much I'd suggest.

Someone point me at an inhabited ALERT system to get the evac/supply thing going.. it seems that prevention of spread may be the only viable option at this point

Now that we understand that it’s rigged and not actually under control of the players I’m going to side with the various large player groups who have pulled out and stop supporting the war effort. It’ll turn out the same either way so it doesn’t matter what we do.

That seems like a bold statement considering in the livestream were were told specifically about them and how much effort went into the Orthrus. We were outright told that we should investigate them (not just kill them).

I feel like dismissing them as "an interesting easter egg" is... frankly a bizarre thing to say given the situation.

sure . we didnt win on week 1.. lets give up.. phttt.
Oh it's not that we didn't win. No one expected to win. It's that our efforts were simply dry-erased at the end of the week and reset to zero.

We are in the exact same position now as we would have been if we did nothing at all.

There's no player agency here. We push the boulder up the hill only to find that it's back at the bottom again.

There's no actual war, it's just a narrative that FD wants to tell, and it will go exactly as they want it to go, no matter what we do.

In the livestream were were explicitly told that Fdev is not in control of the war.

The Thargoid AI systems are running the war.

We were explicitly told that if we failed to take action the Thargoids could and would overrun the bubble entirely, and would eventually reach even Colonia.

Edit: Here you go, have a watch of this and you'll see :)
