Exobiology Rank Reset?

I was half way through the Ecologist Rank - now it's been reset back to Zero (in that rank) due to Update 14.01

That's a lot of plant data - for nothing

What gives?

I read elsewhere that the scale has been reset, you've not actually lost "points" but more "points" are needed to obtain the next rank now. It may look like it's at zero towards the next rank, but it's not. All will be in sync again when you do hit the next level...you just don't know when that might be.

You haven't lost progress. The Update thread which is pinned in the news section of this forum

and the website notes it links to

say
Exobiology rank requirements have been adjusted to correctly account for their adjusted balance.
Developer note: Your Exobiologist rank progress may appear to be greatly slowed until your next rank is achieved in order to adjust to the new tiers.

Don't know what I'm supposed to look at in that thread - but how have I not lost progress if the progress bar on my rank has been reset to zero?

Please explain because I genuinely don't understand - or understand why this has been applied to my rank? Why not just leave it as it was

Because people were getting Elite V in a few hours.

As an example.

If you were 700/1000xp to reach the next rank and suddenly the requirement goes up by 10 fold, you're now 700/10,000.

You haven't lost any progress, but because the distance to the next rank is now much further away it looks like you've made less progress.

Rank progress in Exobiology - like most otther ranks - is linked to the amount of cash you made from selling the data. That cash has been hugely inflated with U14 - so much, that rank progress became a farce and people would have been able to climb the ranks to the highest level (Elite V) within a few hours (might have been exagerated, I haven't done any exobiology yet).
With 14.01, FD readjusted the rank thresholds to match the new payouts, i.e. they (tried to) set the rank progress back so that it would take the same amount of effort than before U14 instead of the same amount of money received.

Example (I'm drawing the numbers out of my head right now):
before U14:
payout for a new species: 10,000 Cr.
earned money required for rank upgrade: 1 MCr, so 100 new species discovered

in U14:
payout for a new species: 200,000 Cr.
earned money required for a rank upgrade: still 1 MCr., now equivalent to 5 new species discovered

adjusted in U14.01:
payout for new species: still 200,000 Cr.
earned money required for a rank upgrade: increased to 20 MCr., so back to 100 new species discovered

the (very recent) background to this is... with the increased payouts in U14, many complained that the progress thru the ranks was now way to fast.
also, the ranking progress was much faster than any other ranking (combat/trading etc)

the rankings were : (from : https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Exobiologist)

Directionless0Artemis Suit Body Suit Livery (Vibrant Green)
Mostly Directionless1,500,000Artemis Suit Torso, Arms, and Legs Livery (Vibrant Green)
Compiler5,300,000Artemis Suit Helmet Livery (Vibrant Green)
Collector12,800,000Artemis Suit Body Suit Livery (Vibrant Blue)
Cataloguer32,000,000Artemis Suit Torso, Arms, and Legs Livery (Vibrant Blue)
Taxonomist65,000,000Artemis Suit Helmet Livery (Vibrant Blue)
Ecologist125,700,000Artemis Suit Body Suit Livery (Vibrant Red)
Geneticist216,000,000Artemis Suit Torso, Arms, and Legs Livery (Vibrant Red)
Elite440,000,000Artemis Suit Helmet Livery (Vibrant Red)

so before, it look a lot to earn 100m... days/weeks of effort - ,but with U14 you can earn it pretty easily in a few hours.

ok, so lets say last week you earned 150k, so you be Ecologist + about 50%,

lets now say for argument sakes (as dont have numbers).. they have changed it now so that
Cataloguer is 125m
Taxonomist is 250M
Ecologist is 500M,
Geneticist is 1Bn

SO, Fdev COULD have downgraded you to Cataloguer + a few %.
but instead, they decided to let you keep the title.
however, its kind of an honorary title ...

to now get to Ecologist, you have to get up to 500M before you will see further progress beyond 0%
and around 750M before you get back to Ecologist+ 50%

so indeed, you have not lost any progress, just your next ranking is going to take longer to get
BECAUSE the payouts have increased by so much
even if we had the above levels which seem like a big increase... 500M for Ecologist with current payouts would be much quicker than before
(and faster than combat/trading etc)

all that said, I dont know what the new ranking levels are... they could be much less that mentioned above.

OK so we now have to do more work to work through the ranks?

It might help if the Update Notes explained this a bit clearer; It just says something about "adjusted balance" which is pretty vague

I was about 1/3 or something through the Ecologist rank and now it's down to about zero. This rank was already quite a steep rank to get past - how much work do I need to do to get through it now?

What is Elite V and what does this have to do with my progress as an Exobiologist?
You're Ecologist?

Well after Ecologist, you have Geneticist, Elite, Elite I, Elite II, Elite III, Elite IV and Elite V.

Basically the Rank Progression wasn't adjusted for the new credit increase, so Commanders were ranking up to Elite and beyond to Elite V far quicker than any other Rank Progression.

So FDev have increased the threshold for each Exobiology rank tier, so now it appears you've not progressed in Ecologist, which you have, it just means the tier threshold has been increased. You've not lost any progress.

It wouldn't have been steep when Update 14 dropped. You could have been Elite by now if you'd taken advantage of it. It still shouldn't be too bad but not at the steep level pre-Update 14.

As an example.

If you were 700/1000xp to reach the next rank and suddenly the requirement goes up by 10 fold, you're now 700/10,000.

The way I understood, based on this quote (highlighted what made me think about this):
Developer note: Your Exobiologist rank progress may appear to be greatly slowed until your next rank is achieved in order to adjust to the new tiers.

Let's say each rank was the same amount of credits/XP, and I'm currently Collector:
Old:
1000/1000xp Directionless
1000/1000xp Mostly Directionless
1000/1000xp Compiler
100/1000xp Collector

So, I have 3100xp total.

New:
2000/2000xp Directionless
1100/2000xp Mostly Directionless
0/2000xp Compiler
0/2000xp Collector

I would have dropped back to Mostly Directionless, but it seems they don't want to strip CMDRs of their ranks.
So, now I own 2900xp to get back to Collector, plus 2000xp more to get to the next rank, Cataloguer.
That's 4900xp I need to get to my next rank - more than double of the normal 2000xp needed per level on my example.
I think this is where that "greatly slowed until your next rank" come from.

did you start this before U14... or was this all last week?

if you'd start before U14, then indeed it would have felt like slow progress...

but with the new payouts from U14, you can get to ecologist in one or two outings... and be well on your way to the next....

I suspect, even with the changes, it wont take you long to progress now.

edit : this topic is a good background to what players were seeing with payouts from U14, and also the rate of progress due to it

Yes. You'd have your rank reset to 0 if your progress in that tier wasn't very high. You do keep the rank but now you have to earn back the difference. The credit increase is still pretty good though, so it shouldn't take all that long to increase the rank again.

It's the fair way to do it. It'd have been worse if you'd lost your rank altogether.

As an example.

If you were 700/1000xp to reach the next rank and suddenly the requirement goes up by 10 fold, you're now 700/10,000.

You haven't lost any progress, but because the distance to the next rank is now much further away it looks like you've made less progress.
So that means that even though I have the visual title of Elite I am actually a Geneticist.

Someone that reached Elite IV now has a huuuuge climb to the next rank of Elite V. Because they are also likely a Genetisist.

Anybody that reached rank Elite V is sitting in sunshine.

Edit Based on info a few posts down:
They aren't looking at rank based on total cumulative credits, just the necessary credits to get to the next rank. Ok.

Cheers Technobear I see what's going down now - it's effectively the same or more or less (I'm surmising) because more money earned required but bigger payouts now?

I'm currently on a planet collecting data for 6 new species - not got round to returning yet to see what the new payouts are like (they were pretty lousy before - I mean some of those species took me HOURS to find! driving my SRV across all kinds of hostile mountainous terrain)
