We are winning, the tide has turned HIP 23716

Its clear as day, this toxic mechanic of erasing hours spent to absolutely zero does not sit well with a sizeable amount of the playerbase.
Not clear at this stage, there where more commanders playing this Thursday than last, less Friday so let’s see what today brings.

Stuff resets all over this game so as an approach it’s not exactly new. Just needs to have the correct balance.

If me and a few friends want to make a difference in a specific system away from the "chosen" ones, our time and energy spent is for nothing besides credits.
Could be worse, if the concentration of thargoids/effort needed to get rid of them in a system is determined by how many systems they're occupying total then clearing a random system might hinder the overall effort for other people by making the goals for those systems higher.

This has only been hinted at in galnet and suggested as a self-balancing mechanic by players. Resets would also mask this because you could see the bar move back on all systems once one finishes if the goals suddenly changed after a system is cleared.

Ill grant you that its only been a week, and that numbers could be off, but there has most definitely been a decline, as seen in the stats. On top of that the morale in the various squadron discords; the multiple new voice channels created to handle the influx of players because of this awesome new narrative we thought we had an impact on, now sit empty instead. Its as if an anti-hype bomb went off and everyone just scattered to focus on real life stuff or other games. In other words, the mechanic just blows.

And what other mechanic resets to 0% progress after the week cycle? Closest I'm aware to is the PP cycle but not even that resets to 0%, but only halves the previous weeks progress. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Edit: I absolutely love this game, and love interacting with people that love it too in-game and in vc, but this mechanic alone pushed many of those people away in a blink of an eye. And that just downright sucks.

What I like about the mechanic, and that really only works with the reset, is that we actually need to concentrate our efforts and act united if we want to be most efficient.
That was already the case without the reset. You're encouraged to clear systems quickly because fewer stations will be damaged, and just that it'll be done quicker. The reset just changes that from being the optimal tactic to the only tactic, wiping your progress if you deviate from it or are just slightly slow/the targets are set too high to be cleared in a single week.

The problem I see with just having a progess bar that doesn’t reset is that after 6 weeks we are going to have dozens maybe a 100 systems which show progress and the average player is going to look at the map and not know which is the big effort and which have very little support and a waste of time.

With it resetting each week it should be clearer where the action is that week to help out.

Last week I fought a war against the thargoids. Apparently, that wasn't good enough for fdev so all our efforts were summarily deleted.

This week we're expected to fight a war against a progress bar to which I say NO, but if that's more in line with your preferences then I wish you all the best.
Too bad, you will miss chance to be a hero, and your name could have forver gone in to Elite Dangerous history as first few brave pilots that fought against all odds and brough first victory in Thargoid War.
It's stuff of legends!

But it's okey, you were busy that week. Urgent business and stuff...

Many players don't do those activities which were poorly implemented from the start.
Do you remember the beta for Powerplay? it was aweful and not much has changed.

It's so lame they haven't even animated the main characters, lol.
I never had any interest to get into Powerplay (outside of the old Amiga game by Arcana). Swearing allegiance to a half paragraph cartoon character didn't feel like "Blazing my own Trail" to me. Maybe one day for the goodies...... Does this make my opinion that the Thargoid war shouldn't be attached to a weekly tick, and it basically just a "that'll do" move by Frontier any less valid?

Spoiler:
No, it doesn't. :) XXX

Well, we do lose all progress. What you say is a fine way of looking at it and in practice it's probably how people are going to have to look at it, but it's just using different words to say the same thing. A system takes multiple weeks to fall, but any work done to save the system in prior weeks doesn't count for anything.
Thank you for removing the solar illumination that was being gusted into my fundamental aperture. :)

If the enemy takes the beach, your efforts there failed. If they then take the fields, your efforts there have failed.
So yes. When the timer runs out, your efforts were for nothing.
Student took Crete in 1941 with his paratroopers. Their losses were so high that they nver mounted another operation in the war again. In the current arrangement, Thargoid weekly victories have no negative consequences - even if they won by 1 percent.

I'm not convinced we can do it this time 🤷‍♂️

Number of players taking part over the last 3 days is less than any of the 7 days prior - its the weekend though, so we shall see.
You meant after Bruce G announced the reset mechanics?

Are you not entertained?

Just wait for the grind fatigue to kick in. Frontier will cook the number again ... and again .... and eventually the reset mechanics will stay but even a solo commander will be able to defend private MF systems.

Eventually, this war will end where PP and BGS are ... some groups play them but the majority of the filthy casuals do not bother at all.

I am trying to run missions in Tharg affected systems, but mission board not cooperating this am. Well then, I need to find something else to do

Why have anything like a "progress bar" at all?
aren't the burning stations full of people begging to be rescued enough to know how we're going there?
