Newcomer / Intro OG Cmdr Blatant returned from a 5 year stasis accident!

Hello fellow spacefarers!

About 5 years ago I was trapped in stasis in an unfortunate accident in deep space (bad power generator!) and haven't been able to keep up with the universe. Recently rescued I'm back in the black!

Before then I was there at the birth of the bubble (OG Backer back many sols ago), I played loads in the early years, I remember a time before powerful factions arose and started their infighting! I had my accident about 5 years ago, it was around Horizons v2.2, factions where a thing, engineering was the new thing (but I didn't look into it so need to learn that) and the Thargoids had just been found.

When I got back to ther bubble, I found my ship collection and remembered what I used to like doing, some old combat ready Vipers for bounty/military work, I was doing rare trading (is rare trading routes still a thing?) in something medium sized and exploring in long distance ASP. I'm quite interested in doing some mining and might be a way to help boost my new mate together.

I was always ready to go toe to toe whatever ship I was in so am also interested in where to catch up on the current meta's for ship builds (always liked bounty hunting or military work when board of exploring or trading).

Anyway, since my return I've a new friend that has joined me on a space adventure however when I got back to my ships and credits literally everything's changed, I had to re-learn how to fly with a nice C400k rebuy! Remapping my cockpit was more than a bit stressful, as was remembering how to land :ROFLMAO: This deep space stasis amnesia is really doing my head in! I used to know what was going on across the verse, feel like I've forgotten everything but if you guys can give me the end of the thread and point me in the right direction I'll be caught up in no time! On top of that half my ships are under-powered now, I didn't leave em like that!

I'm playing Legacy as my mates rig is not too good, so only updates to 3.8, don't need to (or want to from the sounds of it!) know the Odyssey / Horizon 4.0 stuff, however I am completely lost in all the changes since I left.

Any good resources where I can recap the GAME development and changes? preferable in a consumable while I work method like YouTube or Podcast (going through some from ObsidianAnd now), stuff like shipyard rebalancing/nerfing, bubble expansion and notable environment changes (like all the fleet carriers) , gameplay and you know the general how to go about things changes.

I remember there used to be sites to build ship configs and discover trade routes and all that, are any of them still around?

I don't need storylines, I can retro through Galnet for that stuff. I used to play alot and know how the universe worked somewhat, but I feel like I have some catching up to do after my time in status.

What I really need to know is where to get info on best places to grind mining, combat, ramks, trading ect, ect. What have I missed from community goals what is still obtainable, how can I build myself back up quickly and catch up with 5 long lost years? I realize I've probably missed all the Thargoid discovery stuff, does that mean I'm not getting involved in the war storylines any time soon?

PS> Its great to see the universe hasn't stopped changing since I was last here, it's like a whole new adventure!

Any help greatly received fellow commanders

Glad to see you survived, welcome back. ;)

You could start here:

and some here:

Those should take you almost up to the release of Update 14 (the current state).

This is the conclusion of the Azimuth Saga:

Coriolis is still around, EDSY has changed owners (don't even know if H.P. is still around, he's at least not prominent any more under this name).

You're not asking much, are you ;) ?

For mining, generally the best place to hang out is the miner's reddit, second best place is the miner's tool in edtools. Ah yes - edtools is still around, but changed the server (and address), the old ddns address is still around, but I have no idea where it will lead you to these days.

Trading - eddb is also still around, and stronger than ever. Please use one of the (old...) feeder tools (EDDiscovery, EDMC) to help keeping the data up to date (oh - you said you were playing in Legacy. Might be out of luck, then).

Grinding fed/imp rank is a bit difficult right now, as the mission boards are widely broken at least in Live (check over in DD, those are the trending threads right now :-( ). Otherwise, at least in Legacy, nothing has changed much, Robigo still seems a prime address. But, since Legacy isn't going to get any more Thargoid attacks, ranking up through station evac missions doesn't work there (well, it doesn't work in Live right now either, see above).

Not sure how old that one actually is, but you also might want to take a look at Inara, might be new to you. A lot of CMDRs get accounts there so they can keep track of their grinds (not me, though - never felt the urge). But they're very handy for keeping track of Community Goals or BGS activity.

Ahhh... speaking about Inara: IIRC they're not working on Legacy any more (not sure about EDDB), so you might be SOL there. Similar, all FD driven activities (like the mentioned CGs) are now restricted to Live. Legacy is still there and kept running, but that's about all of it.

CGs: you missed a lot. A few of the better devices (like the pre-engineered FSDs in size 5) are available through human tech brokers. Ah yes, tech brokers and material traders - not sure they were there 5 years ago. Tech brokers come in two varieties: Human and Guardian (in Legacy, not sure if the Sirius and Salvation brokers are available there). You either a) hand over a stack of hard earned materials and unlock a set of improved items (lik eGuardian FSD boosters) which you then can buy at the outfitter, or b) hand over a large stack of even harder earned materials and get a single even better item (like that pre-engineered 5A FSD) placed in storage for you. Material traders do what it says on the tin (well, almost): there are three kinds - raw, manufactured and data - and they can exchange the corresponding materials for you. At an exchange rate that can only be called extortionate. Materials are grouped, and if you want to swap mats across groups, guess what: the exchange rate gets even worse.

As for finding these guys and gals: in-game, it's a hassle. They show up on the GalMap - if you've been in this port before and are within xx ly distance. Inara, though, has a nice feature which shows you the nearest material traders (interstellar factors, whatever) with respect to your position.

Guardians: you may have missed them completely. Visit Ram Tah, he still might give you a mission that would have you scan their ruins for snippets of their story. Set up in the right order, and you'll know what happened to them. They provided us with a set of new gadgets, though - usually superior to what human science has develped on its own. If you want to jump that story, check out the Canonn site, they have all the details.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

You probably know at least some of the resources listed below. It's a list intended for new commanders but for a stasis accident survivor there might me some useful stuff in there. Have a look and don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Wicked cheers fella, yea back when I was last in the black eddb.io and coriolis were about but way primitive!

Found this video too, got me updated on exploration and mining and will really help my new mate.

All I can say is man, it's alot easier to make money these days lol. Back in my day I ground for years running rares and illegals to get half way up trader elite with an 8min balance, seems you can mine your way to elite in no time now. You whipper-cmdrs don't know you're born! I remember then ships were just wireframes and you had to press buttons to make things happen, you know?

🤣🧓

ED Tutorials great shout will get to digging.

So....
What are the current Meta's (FOR 3.8) Engineering, guardian tech worth it? Am I gonna get ganked by everyone/thing coz I'm still running stock from years ago?

Can we still partake in any of the thargoid discovery stuff? I hear there's some peng swag to be had there...

Engineering* is definitely worth doing as is some of the guardian tech. Players in fully engineered Fer de Lance or Mamba killing machines will probably come close to being able to one shot you depending on what you are in most NPCs are not that specialised or engineered but some higher ranked ones are somewhat engineered and can take time to kill.

*Engineering is no longer the casino it was when it first appeared and while there is still a lot of random lying around in its shadows you can’t make something worse and special/experimental effects are now a matter of our choice and not due to a spin of the wheel. Old engineered modules can be converted at the cost of one grade to the new blueprints but if you have one of the god rolled modules there is a chance that it might be better than anything we can make now.

If you are playing legacy (3.8) then no, the thargoid war is not in your reality. Whatever a peng is, you can't get it in legacy. ;)

Nice avatar.. Sure it was only 5 years?
Haha cheers 👍

I was there in the black with a ship powered by a Sinclair spectrum when the dark algorithms ware first written.

I saw the polygons filled with colour over the light of Bernards star during the Frontier days.

I tripped the light fantastic around the rings of Saturn when the verse was first truly Dangerous, before we could even dream of reaching out beyond Sagittarius.

I am a Commander born, and will be a Commander till I die!

Elite for life

Awesome, thanks. That's legit great intel right there. Glad it's not a lottery but sad I'll never get any god mods. I assume they are pure unattainium now? (And 3.8).

Are there many players gankers Griefers rocking about with hard core god mods I'll never get?

If I'm beaten down by someone who's ground out legit good gear that's fair enuf, I should pick my fights, but if I'm just finding camping all star, you'll never touch me ats that I'll never be able to match that would kybosh open play for me.

Great summary, you're talking my lingo!

I'm well aware that in legacy all the chat about meta, cgs and stuff is mute, but good to know once I get round to jumping back on live (might try to get back for update 15) however I was thinking (as you've assumed) it might be fun to replay some of the older stuff that I've missed with my new Cmdr friend.

May use my legacy acct as a kind of burner to try bits out like tech and whatnot before rejoining 4.0+, got a lot to catch up on.

Thanks again, I knew this forum would come through!

Ps I kinda meant any old titbits on anything rather than explain everything to me, hahah, but you managed to do both so kudos!

Haha sure, but are the barnacles and discovery bits still around for prosperity? Like how much of the game is one time only gone forever, and what's stateful for future and past players to see?

Cheers everyone, while I'm sure there's lots more to come all the info so far has been awesome.

Good to see the community lives on!!!

I knew right away that even though I know the old times the new player forums would be the ticket to fast tracking a catch up of all things.

Really appreciate you all!

Sub question for other Mostly Harmless Cmdrs dropping by, what did you do to get started now the games 10 years old? What's a rabbit hole of tedium and what's really good fun?

I remember the grinds getting quite monotonous back in the day, be great to hear some noob adventures to inspire my and my new wing Cmdr's adventures before we get the IRL credits to upgrade his rig to 4?0 worthy!

Be a good idea to keep legacy alive that thinking about it, re-running some key events of yestur-year in the legacy sandbox for all the players that might have missed em and would like to see them

Like a good TV show, if you miss it first time you don't wanna be left never being able to see it again right? Sure it's only live once but doesn't mean it should never be seen again! Lol

The other great thing about legacy ED is the planet Gen. The super tall mountains, and super deep valleys for canyon racing are still there. Not so much in the 4.0 versions with the new planet tech as it doesn't seem to generate the same way. I plan to visit alot of the popular 3.8 galaxy sites while the 3.8 galaxy is still there for us.

Humans poked a thargoids with sharp sticks and wondered why they were getting attacked back . The news ran with bad aliens so more people went out with sharp sticks and complained they were getting killed . A new person came in with a longer stick and a fire hardened tip and he got killed . Human race is now looking at possibly flint spears to try and combat Thargoids who are by in large far more technologically advanced but fdev have set the numbers so we think we can win with flint spears 🤦‍♂️

The only things missing between Legacy and Live versions of Horizons are CGs (shame) and new plot type content. Barnacles, Crystalline Shards, Bug Killer‘s crash site and all the rest should be present just where it was.

Some of the external tools will work with either/both Legacy & Live.

Nice one 👍

First off, welcome back!
About this bit:
Are there many players gankers Griefers rocking about with hard core god mods I'll never get?
Thankfully, the whole thing about rolling the same mod literally hundreds of times to get one "god mod" is no longer applicable. Engineering got reworked and every mod you roll now makes the stats better than your previous one, so you'll reach the maximum possible values fairly soon. The old items are still around, of course, but they aren't better than what's available today, as the Engineering 2.0 reworked recipes got their numbers buffed too.

Also,
Haha sure, but are the barnacles and discovery bits still around for prosperity? Like how much of the game is one time only gone forever, and what's stateful for future and past players to see?
Almost everything. The only thing that comes to my mind that are gone are the dredger megaships, a couple of which were seen during some previous storylines, but have left to unknown locations since. Same goes for the Golconda generation ship. We don't know if they have been removed from the game, or if they are still out there somewhere, waiting to be found.

Other than these, no other content comes to my mind that was once in-game but can no longer be found anywhere.

So, have fun!

Cheers for the clarification, I get you.

Those things are largely sight seeing items anyway right?

Sounds like there's plenty to 'fool about with' in Legacy. And once the u14 fires die down a bit I'll be all caught up ready to return to elite life in the galaxy
