To extend those answers a bit, the damage types and resistances only ever concern weapons and projectiles from weapons.
Any other way damage can occur, including collisions and overheating, will have no damage type (for which "absolute" is the confusing term).
To provide you something which
does help:
- You can still put four points to SYS and enjoy that shield damage reduction independently. Each point gives you 15% reduced shield damage taken regardless of source, so all four points will reduce the damage taken from 100% down to 40%, able to absorb 2.5 times more damage.
- Deploying your landing gear before an accidental boost occurs will prevent it, though obviously this is of limited use. However...
- Deploying your landing gear during a boost, accidental or otherwise, will give you superior control over your ship for the duration of the boost. "Superior" is relative here, but in many cases it means you can avoid anything you would have hit, make 90-degree trajectory changes, and even boost to decelerate.
Here is a
boost without moving,
boost to stop moving and a
controlled 90-degree trajectory. Combine that with using four points to SYS when one is about to collide, introduce a little kinetic encouragement, and you get something like
this. Merry Christmas!
