ED Launcher

I have been playing ED off and on since alpha... I decided to install ED and play again a few days ago.. I started installing the game... Now here we are 3 days later after wrestling with ED launcher for HOURS and reading topic upon topic about the same issues with the launcher on REDDIT and other posts of being stuck syncing and several other issues with launcher not validating files.. not to mention the INSANELY slow install speed for a mere 50gb game... I mean I can download and install 50gb on steam in a few hours! THIS TOOK 3 DAYS TO INSTALL 50gb!?!? I almost gave up a half dozen times... but here I am.

If I was not a returning player and I had just bought this game I probably would have uninstalled and refunded the game one day 1 of this venture.... I know based on reading through posts that I am not the only one experiencing these issues.

Please for the love of god fix the launcher, I cant even imagine how many players never even make it to the game because of these issues.. I love this game, I wanted to bring more friends into it but, How can I recommend a game that took 3 days to get into because of a 3rd party launcher.

Isn't the issue rather with the AWS server comms to your PC? I mean, F D release an update by issuing it to AWS and it then propagates to various AWS server locations worldwide. So it isn't that the launcher itself causes a problem is it when myself and thousands of others around the world manage to get a download at many Mb/s? Of course I am merely speculating but it seems reasonable to assume that if the launcher works fine for most people then the issue must lie elsewhere. I suspect that there are various traffic issues that give people problems with AWS - launcher, mission boards, instancing, etc.

The fact that people find "fixes" for various issues by say using a VPN, port forwarding, changing MTU, etc. would tend to suggest that network traffic issues are to blame?

Good luck.

In all the years never had problems with the launcher. Not saying there are none. But why are you sure it is to blame on the launcher?

Please do not: Port forward; use a VPN or change your MTU. That is asking for problems.

Why would using port forwarding be asking for problems? It seems it would be mandatory for a peer to peer based game, unless playing only in solo mode where it won't do anything for the game.

Personally I prefer to manually open a specific port to a specific computer instead of relying on automatic port forwarding using UPnP (which I've always disabled on my routers).

In any case I really can't see how either manual or automatic port forwarding could possibly have anything to do with the OP's problem..

This PC was wiped and everything was installed fresh 1 week ago, haven't had a single issue with any other game I've installed so far. I do remember having similar issues when installing Odyssey @ launch. Before Odyssey installing the game was fine, Hit install wait a few hours and its done... Simple.

My experience has been such,

Download the game on steam.. 2 hours
Start installing Odyssey... 3 days
Login Finally get to play...
Cant use APEX due to a bug, spent the next two hours trying to figure how to get around it...
Finally figured out what the issue with APEX was (Bug with the popup for the Thargoid wars in the galaxy map was causing a hang in the APEX map) Solved!
Start running missions, get 5 in mission board stops working..
Still not working afaik i will login soon to try shortly..

NGL since odyssey things have gone downhill...

On another note, I was happy to see that Odyssey performance has increased a significant amount though since I have tried it at launch.

So let me get this right you found 11 posts on google, that cover the years 2014 to 2021, that's not a bad track record for 7 years, there will always be a few problems with nettworking and game download for any game, but putting up google posts from 2014 may be a bit excessive.

Im just saying clearly this issue has been around for a while... reddit is full of posts from this month want me to grab all of the current ones? cause i can as well starting from Dec 1

One often propagated solution to the launcher being stuck is to disable the cache check. This would be under "Options" in the launcher. I have read multiple times that this can cause issues or cause the launcher to get stuck. I have no idea if this works, because I do not use the launcher to download as my game is downloaded/updated through Steam.

These are some the more current ones, I had found my solution somewhere in these posts for anyone anyone having having update/install issues.

Yes i think in the end what solved it was disabling all those option in the launcher, that finally stopped the hanging issues where it would say 1% left 0.05 min remaining or w/e finally, then with those options off the process began again until several files were failing validation but it wouldn't replace the files or resume the download it would simply fail and go back to the install button(i tried this several times)..At this point i was about to delete everything and install from scratch but i decided to try with the default settings one more time, After closing the launcher again, then re-enabling all of those options it started the process again then the button went from install to Play very quickly.

I also noted that this time for some reason after changing everything back to the default settings Preparing update finished insanely fast(like within 1 minute) compared to the first attempts at getting this to work sometimes preparing update would take almost 10 minutes to proceed to the next part where the file syncing would take place.

Also how were you able to get odyssey to download through steam.. When I downloaded the game it only downloaded Horizons Legacy and forced me to install Odyssey with the launcher.

My network version must go away and come back a lot.

Well the FAQ page offers 3 tips on this "I press play on the launcher; the game doesn't start, but then the play button reappears" issue.

The most common seems to be the NET framework startup check in the EDLaunch.exe.config file failing because a runtime version is missing. I have to say that it is disgraceful that FD coders left in a check for a non-essential version (v2.0) which causes the launcher to fail to launch if it is not installed. I edit out the line checking for v2 and just leave the line:

<supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.5.2"/>

... which is all that is needed.

I have never had a problems with the visual C++ checks, my antivirus or GPU drivers (their other tips) so I can't comment on those.

Odyssey was installed automatically the moment I bought it. If not, go to ED in your library, there should be a this tile:

Clicking on "Manage My 2 DLC" brings me here:

If you tick the box for Odyssey, it should be added you the download queue.

I have the lifetime expansion and season pass package dating all the way back to alpha, I was able to get keys for all of the expansions from the frontier store for steam.. Except ofc Odyssey which is probably why steam never downloaded it and forced me to use the ED Launcher to grab Odyssey that way.

Not sure why they are not providing Odyssey keys for steam for lifers but i guess it is what it is for now.
