Newcomer / Intro Can't launch

Rank beginner here. Started with the tutorial. It told me to auto launch, did that, nothing happened. It seems to want input, there is a chat box on tthe left with the prompt "To [local]:". I have no idea what to put in that, if anything.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dan.

If you are using keyboard, the "activate" key is the Space bar not Enter. The "local:" prompt is the chat box. If you're stuck in that just ESC out.

You probably either pressed a number key (or looked to the upper left) and then <enter>, which activated the chat.
Like metatheurgist said, <esc> gets you out of the input prompt, pressing the number key (can't remember if that's mapped per default to 1 or 2) of this panel closes the panel again.
Don't use <enter> if you want to select some menu item on one of the in-game panels, the default key for that is <space>.

In general, there are four panels in the cockpit that you can open or close through the assigned key or by looking at them. Per default, those keys are 1...4 if you play through keyboard
  • left: external panel, can show nav and scan info
  • top left: communications
  • right: internal panel, ship info. Also the place where you can switch ship options that can't be reached through shortcuts
  • bottom: crew, srv, fighter. "We'll get that later", as they say

Additionally, you got an info panel top right where the ship shows you stuff like warnings, that one is completely under the ship's control, you can't influence it.

I've found that pressing <enter> when the chat box is open will remove "focus" from that box - provided you've not entered any text (if you have back space over it) - and pressing the "open chat box" key again (as it's a toggle), in my case <num>2, will then close the chat box down.

Sounds a bit convoluted but it's really quite quick.

And welcome to ED and the vertical learning curve! :)

Nobody reads manuals any more, maybe it is a blessing in disguise since the game's "living manual" seems to have died and is wildly out of date. (Last update was for 2.4 "The Return".)

Still, the basics like default ship controls are in there. I wonder how they think people are going to know what the on-foot controls are? (In fact, I wouldn't know where to look to find FD's default on-foot controls except via websites.)

Well I think it's fair enough. Why would you bother updating a document nobody reads.

To white knight, troll, forum PvP and general fun.

I originally came here to discuss the game and to learn more, but I've come to realize that there's precious little of that going on.
