Eidolon Hold and Yi Shen are messed up (at least in VR, they appear to be).

So, this happened last night. I'd never been to the Einheriar system before, and decided to see what there was to see. It has an orbital outpost and a Coriolis station, along with a handful of Odyssey sites. I approached the only planet with an atmosphere, scanned it and it revealed an additional site on the surface scanner. So I descended to take a look. First off, as evidence of just how crappy Odyssey is VR, here's a screen shot:

Note all the pointy mountains and patchwork terrain. Sheesh.

Anyhoo, I popped up the system map and....the site called Eidolon Hold was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND ON THE PLANET. I had it targeted, but in the system map, there was no such site. Also, in my left panel.....not there, either.

I approached the site and it was a small station, with normal landing pads and everything. I landed, dropped into the hangar, and this is what I saw:

So, it was an engineer base. For Yi Shen. Oddly, the only engineering I could actually do once I clicked on his engineering workshop was exactly the same as I could using blueprints-only at other bases. I couldn't disembark. And he was nowhere to be found on the Engineers tab of my ship's right panel.

According to Inara, Yi Shen is a PERSONAL EQUIPMENT engineer, not a ship engineer...which you can't disembark at the station to ENGAGE him.

So, either this is a VR glitch, an entire system glitch, or maybe neither he nor his base are supposed to be in-game yet. Goofy.

A base that doesn't exists and an engineer who has the wrong specialties.

No. I don't do the on-foot stuff. But why would he and the base show up as a ship engineer when I landed there? It doesn't make sense. And why would they NOT be shown on the ship panels or system map?

But why would he and the base show up as a ship engineer when I landed there?
Well, the base shows up as an engineer in general. The panel on the screen, yes, that's a bug.
And why would they NOT be shown on the ship panels or system map?
Because if you're not invited they don't want visitors. I'm somewhat surprised that you weren't denied clearance or shot down by the base guns.

It makes perfect sense - why would an engineer's base show up on your map when you haven't been told about it? It's not a station, they aren't open for general business.
And yet it was there and I was able to land and drop into the hanger. No. It doesn't make sense. And even if I accepted that, it also doesn't make sense that the interface acted like a SHIP engineer and not a personal equipment one. This is a straight up flaw.

As you can see by my screen shots, I in fact was cleared to land and used the limited services.

Depending on your GPU/Driver (at least that's my current assumption - feel free to disprove it) landable planets in VR on Odyssey are massively hedghoged right now. See https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/puzzled-planets-and-a-not-so-secret-underground-base.611376/ and https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/56183 ).

In the case you can't take off any more after landing there (because your game CTDs during the spinning ship phase at startup), the "get unstuck" option (main menu -> help) got me out of this fix a couple of times.

The other thing is your(?) issue with the availability of the base in general (and non-availability of the on-foot engineer's services). I haven't tried yet to land at a footie engineer for whom I didn't have an invitation (haven't done much footie stuff at all, besides checking at the ports for decent equipment and realizing that I need a completely new set of materials for engineering guns and suits... oh, and getting killed by someone who apparently wanted to plunder the same downed satellite as I did).

Hmm... usually one can't use the "station engineering via pinned blueprints" at an unlocked engineer base iirc.

Maybe that worked in your case here because you didn't unlock the engineer before the visit and the station has no state for you. 🤷‍♂️

This is a straight up flaw.
What is, exactly? That a stranger was gracious enough to let you refuel (for a charge, of course) when you unexpectedly showed up at their house?

You didn't get access to the engineer's services. That would have been a flaw. As it is, it sounds a bit like you were following a guide that led you directly to the location, unaware that you needed to be invited first and now you're just annoyed at the game / looking for excuses to criticize it.

That is helpful, thank you. I'm not having the loading-phase issue you're describing. Frame rates are pretty bad in most cases, but it's the planetary stuff that just irks me. Horizons is just infinitely better in every way that matters to me.

As for the engineer base issue, I'd love for someone else to see if they get the same results landing at a on-foot engineer base they've not been invited to.

You have one or more filters active. Is the site visible if you clear your filters?

This does actually make sense. It seems we're always able to land at these bases, all the invite does is give you the POI as a visible landing point. As you haven't unlocked the engineer, you can't disembark to use their specific engineering services, but you can use the engineering workshop to upgrade your ship from your pinned blueprints. That all seems fine TBH.

The difference is the change from horizons where there you can't use pinned blueprints from an engineer while at another engineer's base. Now in Odyssey you can, at least at personal weapons engineers.

What devs would call 'working as intended' I think.
