Steam dlc purchase, having to download 50gb again

Greetings Commanders,

I wonder if anyone can provide me with some assistance to this problem. I have looked all over and it seems to be an issue that previous people have had but there seems to be no explanation of a bypass or fix for it.

Context: today I purchased the dlc odyssey expansion. For the past few weeks I have been playing on horizon 4.0 which I was under the inpression that these are the same game files. Now steam is wanting me to download 50gb to update the game. Also when using the frontier launcher it is now saying that I need to install horizons and odyssey downloads are very slow for me around 3mb/ps. Is there a way to bypass this. Its already bad enough that I was in the middle of an engineer grind now I am having to do a download grind and can't get on to play horizons even though I was playing this 10 mins ago.

Any help would be appreciated and happy to provide more details if needed.

Odyssey is a separate game to Elite Dangerous so you have to download the whole thing you'll then end up with 2 games on the Hard Drive ... Elite Dangerous: Horizons and Elite Dangerous: Odyssey

Edit: Just checked and both games installed, via Steam, takes up about 90Gb of space

That's a bit pants - EDO (i.e. 4.01) is 50GB and Legacy Horizons (3.8) is 20GB - what is Steam doing to your computers?

Here's mine:

I just got the size of the whole Elite Dangerous folder in the SteamApps/Common dir

Well if I do that I get 70.6GB so I wonder where your extra 20 GB comes from. Maybe you have more than one Steam account using Elite as each of those needs its own installation in Steam (you can't family share Elite) - my laptop is like that that - it has two 50GB products and one 20GB legacy.

Oh! that's easy to solve after a little dig in the dir ... PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64 comes in at 20.6 Gb

betas add up, mine is 137gb

but for me horizons 3.8 is 28gb, odyssey is 50gb - aka 2 different games
odyssey is 50gb. horizons 4.0 is odyssey with foot content filtered out. so it is nothing more than a filter with the name horizons 4.0 this is 1 game, 3.8 is the other.
2 separate games as they no longer play together in any way at all.

so unless you have 3.8 and/or any betas, 50gb covers it.
if you had/have the drive space you could fool steam into just checking, verifying
might be too late to try now that you already started it.

This is what I thought, I had horizons 4.0 which you look anywhere it's odyssey but with a block on that content, so if I had horizons 4.0 why do I need to unnecessarily download another 50gb it should just check the current version see that it is the same and unlock access to space legs essentially lol

Crazy idea, but: given that Steam will detect game files that already exist and merely verify them instead of redownloading them, you might not actually have to redownload anything.
Go to the Products folder under your ED install dir.
If you have a folder named FORC-FDEV-DO-38-IN-40, rename it to elite-dangerous-odyssey-64.
If you already have a folder named elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 then all good.
Then let Steam download Odyssey. Hopefully it should realise you already have all the files and not download anything.

you didn't have to
google could have shown you how to fool the downloader into seeing it is already there
you might be lucky and it might only be verifying anyway but taking forever
but that would have meant you showing it the install directory and that being the one already being used.
and as I don't use steam any more I have no idea how it does stuff nowadays.
but as always, there are numerous places telling you how.

You can share ED Game files with more than one Steam account without each having its own 70 gb installation. Same with an Epic install and I'm guessing a Frontier install as well.

OP - have you tried verifying the files instead of installing them. If they are in the right folder then Steam should see any files that you already have and not re-download them, as long as they are in the correct folder (see DrinkyBird's post above). This can be a little tricky, you may have to start the download, then pause it and then verify the files.

Thank you for your replies, I allowed the launcher to install the game files... it took a while but alas, I was able to join. as for your instructions, as you can see i have both folders.
ED launcher says that Odyssey is up to date and playable but Steam is still trying to download.

The only thing i can think of is that the launcher is putting it one place and steam isnt picking up its there.

I think you are wrong. You can "Family Share" many titles in your Steam library but you cannot do it with Elite.

Is Family Share for different people on different devices (or geographic areas, IP addresses etc), or multiple Steam accounts on the same device?

Multiple Steam Accounts ... so I log off one account and log in as a different Steam account - can share some games but you can't do it with Elite.

So on my laptop I have my Steam account of Elite but I can also log in as a different Steam user and if I want to run my LEP Elite - I have to install Elite for that steam account to be able to play - it doesn't use the already-installed Elite files but instead creates a new structure under the Elite Products directory.

(I never play my LEP Account in Steam on my PC - always use the launcher, for the life of me I can't remember why I installed the LEP version under Steam on the laptop.)

Laptop Steam directories:

Yes Steam used that naming structure - made me think it was an old beta version, but no it is what Steam wanted to do. ¯\(ツ)

I use multiple accounts all the time with only one copy of the game files.

It has got nothing to do with Family Share, you just log in to Steam with the account that you want to use.

I usually do it through separate Windows users as well (to keep the user files separated), but it works without different users as well. \

Maybe you are trying with an Steam account that doesn't own ED, that won't work. You can share the files, but can't lend the game.
