Newcomer / Intro Combat Aftermath signal sources are a waste of time.

I had not done any of these combat aftermath thingies in years so, as it came up elsewhere recently, I thought I'd investigate. Well all I can say is that there is nothing like the rewards I remember from yonks ago. Seriously, FD expect us to spend time doing these for "small" increases in influence and reputation? If it were not for the fact that I could get 30k for the black box I basically was out of pocket for some strangers.

Anywayup, here is a short video as a warning to any newbies who feel tempted to have a go...

(I was going to do a "scan the private data beacon" variant too but none turned up and I got bored. sorry.)

Oh noes. Payments for this scenario were not adjusted for the last 3 years of in-game inflation. Now this aspect of the game is 'useless' and a 'waste of time'. Dropping out of Supercruise for less than a million. How dare Fdev.

'Play the game your way'

Well, while it may not pay well, it is interesting none the less and it also seem to offers bgs rewards as in security and influence increases for the faction offering the mission

the draw to them is materials, always was.

same as most uss's
there are better ones for bgs purposes, not to mention better bgs methods to adjust inf.

complain about capping rewards or rewards like limpits or any material reward less than g4

capping so that 75% of bounties vanishes the instant you get it. or to be precise 1mil is the max you can get from a 4mil bounty.
this alone makes it pointless to bounty hunt.
here's a knife...oh but it has no blade. good luck.

offering limpits is like offering air, better to offer nothing than to offer insult.
offering g3, g2, g1 grade materials is also useless.
all these things were dealt with in Horizons and it took a very long time and a lot of cmdr supplied info to get it right.
now, thanks to the new, its a start all over again project, LIKE IT was NEVER DOnE.
THIS, is something to complain about.
every aspect of Odyssey ruined all forms of material collecting.
and made many of them worse than they have ever been.
thank the rng for mining missions. and braintrees.
now that I say that, I expect them to get destroyed.

its normal for most Odyssey missions to be on a pay scale 1/10th of Horizons 3.8, old news.

making it clear, kill thargoids if you want credits or materials, the hard way.

I was not going to disagree without checking more than my video already shows, so I went to check. I have now done four more of these - black box and data beacon ones - and not a single piece of materials anywhere to be found, not even data from the scan ones. The nearest to seeing any materials was when a wing (I refuse to call the teams) of pirates (or the opposition) turned up all guns blazing.

So, no there are not any materials to be had from these in 4.01 it seems.

There are now two types of Combat Aftermath. CA 0 and CA 1.

CA 0 are the old ones with good materials. CA 1 is the scan something scenario. For some unknown reason when they introduced CA1s they also made CA0s much rarer. 🤷‍♂️

Oh I didn't realise that - yes only threat 1 were in the system.

Try the pirate activity ones.
Make sure you have a inconspicuous ship like a t7. Certainly not something like a mamba as that will make the NPCs really interested in you.

Happy harvesting!
(tip: SnR that are in Boom seem to give more credits than other SnR)

Not found them to be very interesting either... Run in, pickup some life pods, sometimes they last few get stolen by NPCs. Been jumped by scouts in in them once or twice, I can't remember for sure.
