Newcomer / Intro OG Cmdr Blatant returned from a 5 year stasis accident!

Also should I grind engineer/guardian FSD before I go Exo? I'd rather do it before if it makes it more fun less boring doing Exo later.
Definitely get that FSD range increase, it's really easy, Felicity Farseer just needs some items that you can buy to unlock her services. Here's the ingredients list:

Increased Range FSD
Grade 1
1 x Atypical Disrupted Wake Echoes
Grade 2
1 x Atypical Disrupted Wake Echoes
1 x Chemical Processors
Grade 3
1 x Chemical Processors
1 x Phosphorus
1 x Strange Wake Solutions
Grade 4
1 x Chemical Distillery
1 x Eccentric Hyperspace Trajectories
1 x Manganese
Grade 5
1 x Arsenic
1 x Chemical Manipulators
1 x Datamined Wake Exceptions

Materials Traders can be used to trade up or down your materials for what you need.

Echoes, Solutions, Trajectories and Exceptions can be had by scanning FDS wakes.
Processors, Distilleries, and Manipulators - I think you can find them in High Grade Emissions signals, or you can earn some top tier materials like crystals from missions and trade for them.
Manganese and Arsenic, either trade up your other minerals from mining, or there are ways of at least getting Arsenic directly, I got mine from The Bug Killer site which is also good fun driving the SRV around chewing up the scenery. Trade the other things you get for Manganese.

You will need about four or five "clicks" on each grade before the next grade unlocks.

For mining I'm currently based out of Diaguandri which has good prices for both Platinum and a few other materials like Osmium that you get at the same time. GCRV 1568 is very close and has lots of hotspots on AB 1's rings. The small spots on the inner ring are good.

Learn what materials you don't want, and add them to the Ignore list in your Contacts screen.

Install lots of Collector Limpet controllers, my Python has three.

Oh, and whilst you can sell to fleet carriers for good money sometimes, you only get trade rank for selling to stations.

Edit Actually Nobel Terminal in Kalak is better as it has demand. Always check Inara.

This!

I'm going core mining coz who doesn't like popping a big sod off roid huh?

I'll check out all the prices and pick something. Based on hotspots on https://edtools.cc/hotspot and nearby trade on inara.

(Feels good to b back in the saddle)

Straw poll commanders Best Sml Ship for Exo, personal opinions please! I can't make up my mind, classic Sidey, retro my Viper4? I do want to take an SRV for fun n games.

Im back at good ol' Jameson right now and a few hundo Millie in my back pocket, wanna do some of that Exo money money along the neutron superhighway as well...

DBX for jump range and if not travelling too far so that long fuel scooping times aren't an issue. Downside - you disembark from the rear so walk around to the front a lot. If you want to mix canyon racing and Exobiology, a super light weight Imperial Courier has a decent jump range and can boosts to 850m/s or higher on some builds. Needs engineered enhance thrusters for this. Also disembarks from the rear and will probably explode when you hit a canyon wall.
Dolphin - I'm not a fan, but is had a cult following and disembarks from the side.
The disembarkation position is an issue as you will probably land with your next exo sample at the front of the ship. The medium Krait Phantom disembarks from the front, which saves walking time can is sometimes tricky to land on rough terrain. Can't remember the disembarkation location of the Asp X as I don't use it enough. It's a bit easier to land than the Phantom, though.

I use DBX and Courier when exploring from my carrier, the DBX mostly. Phantom for long range trips.

For any ship that takes a class 5 FSD, the Engineered FSD V1 from human tech brokers is the way to go.
Add mass manager effect to it at Felicity's place. A bit more expensive in materials for several ly more jump range.

I sense a Diamondback coming on, many like it...

Thanks for the tip about selling to fleet carriers, I would have missed that.

Oh I didn't know that exists. Can't seem to find it in Coriolis ship builder.

It's not in there. If you edit optimal mass to 1856.4 on a grade 5 increased range with mass manager effect you'll get the correct jump range for it.
I think edsy has the Engineered FSD V1 but it's harder to use than Coriolis https://edsy.org/

Scroll down this page to the Engineered FSD V1 heading for details on materials needed to get one.

Thanks for all the updates fellas,

Mining's going splendidly, I'm using Inara to find Minerals selling for >700k credits a ton, (pro tip 1) going to the station to double check price and demand (!), Using the miners tool to locate a close hotspot (pro tip 2) wait for the AI pirates to jog on before you fill the hold and don't go back into SC until your done) and I'm making about 50million an hour in a 100m ASP-X, about 9 trips before I pop that first Elite!

Then Exo and Exploration me'thinks. I don't have a Krait yet so might try that but will re-read the above first, thanks again.

(To quote John Wick), Yea... I guess you could say I'm back..."

Congratulations Cmdr Backer Blatant on reaching Elite status.
I too have just come back to the game after 4 years away but luckily my PC will run Odyssey ok.
I am playing in solo and can easily make 20 million credits a trip so maybe 60 million an hour just jumping back and forth with goods. I also tried sightseeing missions at Robigo to Sothis and that was easy, now I am in a hi res site kicking with pirate missions from Ngalinn.
Learning everything again is hard but fun. Not sure I am ready to meet the thargoids.
As far as engineering it is a grind but if you decide to use the tools and youtube it helps.
