Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

A better question would be "what are the chances of there ever being a full release version of S42?" Where "full" means a regular game that competes with other games with no caveats, even regardless of quality, and not a stripped-down intro, demo, "prelude" or some other having-your-cake-and-eat-it "it's released!" / "it's tier 0 alpha, the full game will be so much better!" trickery.
And the answer would be: zero chance.
I think there will be a full release simply because they have taken VGTR in the UK for many years. If they don't file a completion certificate they would leave themselves open to the possibility of an investigation. I suspect that it will be carefully timed though and it will not happen while funding is maintained. In actual fact I suspect the release of SQ42 will mark the public start of the end game. The current emphasis on SQ42 is to tighten up the end game scenario and remove their only obvious exposure. The business is built on the premise that the funding will be maintained. The moment that starts to slip I expect Sq42 to release.

I don't think CR thinks as far ahead as VGTR. I mean, he can string this along for another few decades until its no longer an issue for him.

Interesting point, I'm not able to find any specific mention of potential investigation on the gov uk website just that you file a completion certificate for more tax relief at the last stage. It does say that a game won't qualify if its being made for "advertising and promotional purposes". But hey go ahead and make a massive online store full of whatever expensive digital gubbins you can make up and promote away for eternity.

I guess when they designed the VGTR they had proper game development in mind, with a start and end needed so that the developer had to produce stuff that stood on its own merits to get paid. They had no idea that anyone could set up a "crowdfunding" company and use it to avoid tax on a perpetual basis to create a platform primarily for promoting the sale of super expensive digital spaceships, land claims, modding guides and preorders for stuff nobody at CIG cares to answer for anymore.

Ne'er been done before? ;)

It's all been worth it...

Was that five minutes into a 24-hour stream? :D

Mikey said something whilst watching that 2016 video that's been a truth for quite some time. 'Every dollar raised by Ci~G is invested not in game development but in how to make the next dollar'.

That's certainly been true since 2017 and the release of the completely gutted 3.0 'Jesus patch'. I'd only add that besides marketing, sales and building the Empire of Roberts, the only other money sink at Ci~G is Sqn 404. The PU (Star Citizen) has been dying a death of a thousand cuts year after year since then... both figuratively and in reality. I suspect after the entire month of this years 'planning week', it'll have slipped even further down the priority list for develoment resources.

A further small prediction wild guess for 2023 if I may indulge? (@VR Golgot)...I forsee the departure of one or more senior managers from Ci~G, more than likely headed by the current head of live development, Todd Papy ;)

Just as an additional note on that 2016 video. When I watched it back then, I had absolutely no idea who this 'NaughtyDog' was that the idiot Roberts kept comparing Ci~G to...now, after having played most of their crop of highly acclaimed games on the PS4 (Uncharted series 1-4, The last of Us 1 and 2) and seeing those games now being translated into film and TV series as well as being released on PC for the first time, It makes the comparison even more ridiculous.

Wheesht my dear Mole!

Backers simply need to buy more Idrises - and then Genuine Roberts Vision can be totally fulfilled - and Star Citizen and Squadron 404 will be world famous film and TV franchises.

They will certainly never be games.
