Sidewinder specific upgrades (frameshift, engine) where to find?

There are some threads talking about upgrades but none with locations for sidewinder stuff.

I've googled for it too and found only incorrect info: Asellus Primus, Aulin, Styx, Yanyan where all supposed to have frameshift drive upgrades for the Sidewinder..

But I've visited those and other stations too. No frameshift drives or engines whatsoever. couldn't even find shield upgrades, but I'm not so desperate for that.

I also went to Freeport, Aulis, Azeban, Morgor, Dahan, Rakapela, iBootis and a few others I can't remember all the names.

Not one place had a frameshift drive for the Sidewinder.

.

I also read about the hourly refresh: does this mean if there is no "+" on the frameshift drive box (meaning they don't have any upgrades for that slot), that after an hour is up, a "+" could appear, so they suddenly have an item type they didn't have before, or do they only refresh those items that already / always have the "+" on their box? :S

.

It feels extremely tedious if you can't find ship upgrades! And it sure isn't for lack of effort :p ...Like, "ok, what for did I just bother hauling all this crap all over the place?" Place is hostile enough with zero NPCs to interact with, other than those fining you, if you're stuck behind an NPC ship getting out of the station, they are so slow, that you get a fine for flying behind them, even if your nose is about to touch their exhaust pipes. They gonna fix this all by December?

Wolf 437 has good luck for me for FSDs. Every one I've ever bought has been there.

Thank you!

And holy crap, that is a treck! 34 Light Years... on my way... I'm amazed I can actually go there in my Sidewinder, a lot of systems in that direction, the route planner couldn't find any route with short enough jumps :p

Thank you very much! Excellent advice! Got B rated frameshift drive and power plant! I really only wanted a 'C' rated one, but this is a great opportunity to try out a really nice frameshift drive on a lowly Sidewinder before the wipe...

They interdict like crazy in that system, but I evaded every time ^^

don't bother, just get 6t cargo and save for a cobra. no point in wasting 100k on a shatwinder when you could save it and get a cobra 208k down the line

I only have like 10 hours of play on it and Thursday is wipe... I'm not going to try for a Cobra like that, but getting a "B" Frameshift drive makes the whole universe a different animal!

Also, I do fine with 4t cargo, cause I don't really trade. I only get stuff from somewhere when they offer to buy something for a specific price, like 4 Superconductors for 49k credits and such. If there's no good offers, I just wait. No point doing all that busy work.

I find the Sidewinder has its advantages: with the lasers removed, light weight components installed and that fs drive, my jump range is almost 20 LY, with cargo still ~18 LY. That means I can get this stuff fast from places that would normally be far to go. It can evade most interdictions and the few times I didn't, I've always been able to outrun them in the Sidewinder, just strafing back and forth while rolling...

For later, I think this is a good test.
I also saw, that when you buy another ship, you apparently keep your loaner gear, unless you upgraded it already...?
I'd also like to avoid what some Viper buyers ran into, where their jump range was total crap, and then they had to go and try to make money and find a better fs drive, while dealing with poor jump range...

Seems to me, I could buy a 150k fs drive before getting a new ship and just use it in the Sidewinder till then...? Or can I not use my components for the next ship?

You sadly can't carry components to the next ship. You do get 90% of their value back when you sell the ship, though.

Ohh that ***** ^^

What is the in-lore explanation for that? ship component slots are formed differently for every ship?

Getting 90% back of the value is decent though. Thanks for the info!!

Questions:

I can keep the old ship when I buy a new one, right?

How does insurance cost change on a Sidewinder, if you have 100k worth of equipment installed on a 32k ship?

I guess I should buy a Viper right at Wolf 437, where I can immediately buy a better jump drive for it...?

Insurance on a pimped sidey works just like with any other ship. My sidey is worth 700k, and if I want to get that back when I die (you bet I do!) I have to pay insurance for the hull and the modules, just like any other ship.

It's only if you go for the 'free sidey' option that sideys are actually in any way free.

I'm at Wolf 437 at Bunsen station but I'm not being offered a frameshift drive for my Sidewinder... what can I do? Wait there?

The info from previous posts is likely out of date, since Gamma was released.

As far as I know, waiting at a station doesn't change what becomes available in the Outfitting there. I may be wrong though.

If you can get there, try Snyder Enterprise in TK Arietis. That should have almost everything you'd want.

Frankly, I've rarely seen the outfitting screen change even during beta, so I am not 100% convinced that has been the case for quite some time, or at the very least there is something else going on that makes it appear like the stock changes.

The general rule of thumb in the last beta builds do still appear to be the case most of the time though;

Industrial worlds seem to have a higher chance of selling power plants.
High tech worlds seem to have a higher chance of selling FSD's.

I'm not sure whether there is any additional requirement, such as a industrial wold needing to be extract or refinery, but so far it seems that about 2/3 systems of either of the above that I visit the above rule applies. Of course that doesn't mean they'll have a part you actually want, but it at least gives you an idea of where to look.

So before you go on your epic 34ly journey, try looking around for your nearest high tech world instead.

I'm not sure if there's a killer quick way to search the galactic map for the nearest high tech worlds, but the way I do it is to switch on trade routes and only show routes that are trading something techy like computer components; this lights up high tech worlds like a Christmas tree :) The same can obviously also be done for industrial worlds by looking for the trade of specific things as well, though frankly most inhabited systems seem to be either industrial or agricultural so these should be fairly easy to find.
