Xbox Controller not working

Hello guys!
I was away from the game for a few months and I noticed that a new update for the game was released.
Previously I was able to play normally with my Xbox One controller connected to my PC.

But now that I've installed the game again, I can't play with the controller at all.
I've already tested all the settings that the game provides, I've already checked the Steam options, control settings in BIG PICTURE mode, and nothing has solved this problem.
The controller is not recognized either by USB cable or via bluetooth.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Back to the basics. You said XBone controller via USB?
Ok, first step: is it recognized by the windows game controler control panel?
Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and Printers, right click on Controller (if that one isn't there, Windows has forgotten the driver) -> choose the controller you want to see (I have three listed on my PC right now) -> Properties -> Test tab
That should give you the basic Windows controller interface with the raw output of the controller's axes and buttons. If this works, but ED doesn't react to the controller button presses in the config menu, then the problem is between Windows and ED. I'd start with a file verification.
If this doesn't work, the problem is between your controller and Windows. Good Luck. I'd start with checking that the controller is actually powered up (i.e. you can get at least one of the lights on the controller to light up.

If you mean that the controller doesn't show up as a preconfigured device in ED, I got no idea - haven't been using a default binding in ages.

Thanks for the answer. But the problem has nothing to do with the control and Windows. All my other installed games are working normally without any kind of problem. And of course, in the Control Panel everything is ok.

The problem really is, somehow, in the ED. All the games I have installed from Steam, Ubisoft, Epic, XBox Gamepass are working normally with the controller.

In some threads right here on the Forum, I saw that some people had problems with controls exactly after the most recent update. I honestly don't know what could be causing the controller not to be recognized by the game. I already uninstalled it, installed it again, checked files through Steam... nothing solved it!

I use a 360 controller and it's working fine never had any issues with the 14 update;

- have you made sure you're using the correct binds file which I assume was setup for the controller?
-- you didn't leave the binds file named custom did you?
- is the controller being seen by windows as controller #1 and was it setup in Elite as controller #1? (check the LEDs around the Nexus button)

try the usb port you originally used
use the lost binds guide renaming sticky at top of this pc sub forum...… (renaming will ensure correct file is being used as name selected will appear in game)
else
look for the Devices settings in Control Panel and check if the game controllers are listed. If so, refer to the following steps to alter the settings and check if these are helpful in resolving your issue.

a. Right click on one of your game controllers and click Game Controller Settings. Note where in the list it is. If it is not at the top proceed to the next step.

b. Right click and remove all your other controllers (not the xbox gamepad) plug back in and let them reconfigure automatically.

c. Once complete right click and check the list again and see if the 360 controller/gamepad is at the top. If so, give the game another try and see if it detects your controller.

If the issue still persists, restart your pc and then try to reconnect your controller.
else 🤷‍♂️

Well, unfortunately nothing worked here.

I also tried to change it as you published it in your post and it didn't work either. The problem is not my controller, my windows or my game. According to the attached image, it can be seen that everything is correct.

This is the only game I have installed that is experiencing these issues. I agree with other colleagues who have already complained. That blame rests entirely with Frontier, who for some reason screwed up the Xbox One's control scheme. Everything was working fine until the latest update.

It remains for me to learn to play with the keyboard and mouse, since I was completely adapted to the xbox one controller. Even so, thanks a lot for your help and I hope someone finds the ultimate solution to this problem.

Big hug!

OK try this https://edrefcard.info/binds/ejnbnj
save the text download at the bottom as somthing .binds and rename as per guide (make the name strontiumtest 3.0.binds)
and put it in the bindings folder and show a screenshot of it selected in the presets in the game for my sanity...…………………………..
boot elite dangerous horizons not odd as they are not for odyssey

Just connected the Xbox One controller to the PC and it works fine with my existing 360 Controller layout in the latest version of the game, so with Update 14.

I've attached both the .3 and .4 versions of the binds files for you to try in Horizons and Odyssey (you'll need to upzip them obviously) ... they both worked fine for me being selected for all 4 control methods in Odyssey so if they don't work for you then something else is wrong.

Oh! attached xbox controller to PC via USB cable and removed the battery prior to plugging the controller in.

great only I thought he was using a standard xbox controller?
no mention of it being an elite 360
I did not use my own standard usb leaded xbox controller binds as mine are integrated with voice attack and my own homemade voicepack
which I cannot share due to various sci fi film and series content "swirly thing alert"
(hopefully OP is sorted as hasn't posted back after my last posting request)

What's up guys?

Well, I did what you suggested, I downloaded the "Controller 360" file for testing and I didn't get any positive results either. I also did what STRONTIUM DOG suggested, going to "https://edrefcard.info/binds/ejnbnj" and following the instructions creating a new configuration file. As you can see in the screenshots, the game recognizes the files, recognizes their configuration, but does not recognize the controller.

The third print is to show that the control is fully functional, where when pressing the Xbox logo, the Xbox Home Bar screen opens and all functions are active.

For some reason the game just doesn't understand that the Xbox controller is connected. And I've already tested connecting via USB cable, bluetooth and definitely nothing works. I can't even edit any command in the game. For example, if I want to remap a button, I can't either.

My last attempt will be to do a test with a PS4 controller that I have here, using the DS4 application that will emulate an Xbox 360 controller. Maybe it will work. I'll test it and come back here with the results. Tnx guys!

Unfortunately the PS4 controller doesn't work either. The game simply does not recognize any controller! My Jesus!
The way will be to adapt with keyboard and mouse controls!

the file I suggested was for horizons ONLY not for odyssey so delete it (or rename 3.0 if your gona play using horizons )
horizons requires version 3.0 not 4.0 bind files which are for odyssey only in effect a different game and are not compatible with each other
the game runs fine without steam once launched disable any steam controller support in big picture mode
and in the game launcher options tick x input
if that don't work I give up maybe someone else can help
admittingly I do find it odd that a game designed with x box controller in mind don't work for you...…. works just fine for most so I can only assume human error somewhere is the device listed in device manager not devices and printers and is it the only game controller device connected other than mouse and keyboard?
my sticked guide does say how version 4.0 files can be sucsessfully renamed if followed to the letter which some find hard to do it seems
good luck

Yes. In this case Steam opens the Frontier launcher. It is through the Frontier launcher that the game starts.

I don't know the details but there was (is?) an issue with the Steam controller settings messing up controller use in Elite - something about "Big Picture" or some such.

AHA - the ninja strikes! lol

There's something I'm going to try here now and it's very likely that I've figured out what could be going wrong. Inside my "appdata/local" folder there are two folders related to ED: The first one is named "Elite Dangerous" and has all those settings files/folders mentioned here. But there is a second folder named "Elite_Dangerous".

The odd thing I noticed is the date on that second folder. It was created in November/2022. And that's where I think the problem is happening.

I had the ED Horizons version from Epic Games and had not yet purchased the Odyssey expansion from Epic Games. Only at the end of December/2022 did I acquire the version with the STEAM Odyssey expansion. I deleted the Epic version and started a new one on Steam. I believe that these two folders are causing a conflict between them and that maybe because of this, the game cannot recognize any connected controls, just mouse and keyboard.

I'm going to uninstall, delete the two folders (older and more recent) and let the game create a new one with the updated settings for today. As soon as I can test it, I'll post the update here. It might help someone else who might have done exactly the same thing as me.

BINGOOOO GUYS!

It worked guys, control now working properly. I believe that the two folders were generating conflict with the commands because they were from different versions. Obviously I don't know how to specify the problem more precisely, but deleting the two folders and reinstalling the game apparently worked.

Another thing to follow the tip of our colleague @MickyG1982 . In the post you mentioned, it said to check all STEAM controls, close, reopen STEAM and uncheck all controls. I don't know if this influenced the resolution of the problem, but who knows?

Anyway thank you very much to everyone who put their tips and tried to help in some way. Big hugs to everyone!

See you across the galaxy!

Both folders are needed, they perform different functions. If you look at their contents you will see that they are totally different.

Your success was most likely because whatever file was causing your issue was in one of the folders that you deleted, not because the two folders had any conflict.

Glad you got it sorted.
