Newcomer / Intro Third Party

I thought i had bought Elite Dangerous but it seems it is Third Party, i installed it on Steam and now it seems to be installing again. I have no idea what's going on so would like some help with this.
Thanks

Where did you buy what, that's the question. Elite Dangerous is from Frontier Developments, so Steam or Epic are already third parties. With the arrival of Odyssey 4.0, there are two Versions - 3.8 aka Legacy and 4.0 aka Live - with slightly different content.
I don't play ED on Steam (I hope you'll get an answer from someone who does) , but I heard that Steam can only install 3.8 and you need to install 4.0 through the FD launcher.

Steam appears to install Legacy Elite and Live Elite, which for all intents and purposes are two entirely different games, different code, different downloads, so it might be the first download was Legacy Elite, the old version now no longer receiving updates, and the next version is Live Elite, the latest version that is still being updated.

I bought it from a UK Retailer called CD Keys, Everything seems to be running ok but i had a problem at first. It kept asking me to buy the game after putting in the code, i closed the Launcher then started it again and everything worked. I don't know if it installed the game again as it said syncing, but that took a further 2 hours. Just need to learn how to play it now lol. I was expecting it to be similar to No Man's Sky but i am struggling with the controls as everything seems backwards (Joypad). I am hoping i can switch things round to my way of playing. Thanks for the replies i appreciate them.

There is a manual linked at the top of the launcher window. It is madly out of date but it does contain all the info you need for ship operations (it doesn't cover any on-foot) including the default controller assignments.

P.S. The learning curve is huge, much more to it than NMS - but it is well worth persevering.

So that's probably a Steam key. FD support have a website where this (and other) error message and what you can do in this case are explained (sorry, my location only gest me the German page): https://customersupport.frontier.co.uk/hc/de/sections/4404016904082-Technischer-Support . You may have more luck with going to customersupport.frontier.co.uk and climb down from there.

Control bindings... on the plus side, ED is extemely flexible in the bindings. On the minus side, if you don't want to use one of the predefined bindings, you have to assign everything you want to use by yourself (and take a bit of care so that ED doesn't wipe your own assignements on the next small hiccup: if you assign your own bindings, it's highy recommended to make backups. See also https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-free-backed-up-binds-look-no-further.554451/ ).

Thanks guys appreciate the help, it's mainly the 2 sticks on a xbox controller, i just need to swap them round otherwise i am good to go. Looking forwards to giving it a go.

There are lots of voluntary training and tutorial missions available from the menus these put you into a particular ship and situation each time you do them which is ideal for binding the many screens of controls to your liking.

Some tips,
Rename your control bindings to something other than custom then with a text editor change the name in the second line in the bindings file to the new name. Then back it up in a different folder.
Always plug your controllers into the same sockets before starting the game otherwise it won’t recocgnise them properly and will use the wrong bindings.

Thanks i will do that later, it's a game that i really want to get into. I was going to rush out and buy Odyssey but thought i best wait till i get more into it. I usually when buying a game i think i am going to like, rush in and buy the expansions and DLC. It's happened a few times where i have done that and hated a game. I must be getting wiser in my old age.
