Is Elite Dangerous a dead game? I compared it to some others ...

ED is not dead yet, but the botched release of Odyssey one year too early was very close to the final nail in the coffin. Player numbers were crazy high on release, but more than half of those have left and not bothered to come back. The current Thargoid war is a very double-edged sword, some love it, it has even brought a few players back that went to Star Citizen, but there are plenty who hate it too.

Didn't we establish a long time ago Steam charts are probably only 50% of the actual numbers and the games not dead.

https://www.edsm.net/en/map/users - Shows ten of thousands of players a day.
For a like for like comparison it is ok. I was not and am not trying to get an accurate count of how many play Elite Dangerous, but to make a comparison with other games. If that site is inaccurate for Elite, it is equally inaccurate for other games as well, but the comparison is still valid and the point is made.

It's not equally inaccurate for all games, because some games may be available only in Steam and some others on several platforms, of which Steam may or may not be the most popular. But I think it's still interesting to see those numbers, because it gives a rough idea of the amount of players in this and some other games. I didn't know the website Steam Charts before.

I estimated the amount of players in that EDSM user map, and got about 9000 players just a moment ago. But isn't that counting only those players who have an account on that website?

And this is a thread suggesting the game is not dying. It's my attempt to say I was wrong in the past, and have changed my opinion.
The first two lines were confirming it's obviously not dead. The third line was actually in reference to using Steam charts, which especially for MMOs really isn't a good metric of anything.

When you don't have WoW, Old School Runescape, Runescape, Lost Ark and Guild Wars 2 to name a few, because they use their own launchers it's hard to draw any conclusions. EvE is one of the few games you can get accurate player numbers for because of their API. They actually have over 27K users online now https://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility

I'm glad you've realised the game isn't dying though.

Look, all I did was make a thread saying "OK, maybe Elite isn't as dead a game as I have said it may be", and some of you think I'm saying it is a dead game (I'm not) and what site I used.

For a comparison it is valid, why? Because it's comparing ONLY those playing via Steam. As I've said, I'm not saying it's accurate, I'm just saying compared to other games played on Steam according to this site blah blah blah.

Now, if you'd get off of your high throne of superior attitude and just take this thread at the face value of "It's not yet dead, Jim" and be happy instead of moaning about every little picky thing you can find.

Ozric, this isn't aimed solely at you, so apologies if it seems like I'm singling you out.

When you play games as primarily a solo player, whether the game is dead has a hard time being a concern...

But this thread has made me think about the concept of player numbers.. with some randoms:

- Frontier have never told their player numbers in public, apart from the slip by the community manager that one time. From the video in my prior post, apparently you need at least a few hundred thousand players to make a list of any kind. So was that why frontier was so shy about their player numbers? They're so low it would be material to their stock price? You can only assume elites players are lower now they've killed off consoles and stopped optimization. Wait.. have they banned toxicity on the forums in the last year? Keeping players yep might be good.

- The usual tangent, the last numbers i heard from star citizen were huge. Im not assuming for a moment its factually true, but that could mean there are many multiples of people playing star citizen than elite at the moment. Really?

Probably the thing that i miss from a players perspective is, regarless of potential and goodwill, if something has faceplanted (dpssing the floor?) it takes alot of money to try and res it. And even then its not certain.

@Alien
Regardless of your perceived good intentions, you pretty much opened a doom portal which the post above is seeking to take advantage of, albeit indirectly.
This thread could pretty much die or be closed now because "apology accepted" and let's just move on from it.
