General / Off-Topic An end to internet woes.

I come from a backwater of the internet and this is my first foray into gaming.
.
On the graphics newsgroup that I have subscribed to for about ten years. The most heated we get is when someone says that the power of the GPU should be used for a CPU intense programme. So reading the current torrent of loathing makes me wonder if this is the sort of place I want to visit.
It is also a chance to air the theory that all of social media would be a better place if our accounts were linked to our real names. And our offline lives held accountable to what we do and say online.
.
Any thoughts?

I'd never have an issue having my real-name displayed to the world.

However, when Blizzard tried this - the amount of heat that came back to them made them change their minds. I understand there are people with rather unique names, and vulnerable people, that may not want themselves to be "found" by someone down the road...

My account is linked to my real name. If for instance I said ' I am going to kill president Ob***' I might get a visit as if they want to they will trace you if they want to via credit cards ETC.

I just do not want a small minority of people having a better chance to hassle me.

If someone bothers me I block them.

Perhaps If everyone knew who I was and where I lived Email ETC, I would not say what I want to say, meaning that this limited anonymity is a good thing, its proportionate to the harm you can do.

I was thinking that in my real life, There is no one I hate, a few people I dislike and most people are reasonable
I know one person who can be very pleasant, but then can instantly become upset and take unreasonable offence at things that everyone else shrugs off. It happens again and again and they never seem to learn.

I think what we see here is either that more people who fit into that category play games and go on forums
or
Something about a forum lowers peoples social expectations
or
The age / cultural / language differences magnify misunderstandings
or
like me they go on line drunk.

Sorry to waffle on
* dear secret service please take the first line in context. I am not a murdering psychopath, or an ideologically driven assassin in real life*

I pretty much agree with everything you said. But you are a responsible person and realise that what you write online can have an effect in RL.
I suspect that there are a lot of people who think that "the internet" is not real. Everyone else is an actor like on the telly. <sigh>

Proportionate, just the word to use. :)

I know that person as well. ;)

Lowers their expectations of themselves. IMO. :(
The age / cultural / language differences magnify misunderstandings
LOL That covers just about every possibility. :D

You are so right about that.

And I go offline drunk.

Aye, there's the rub. There is always genuine grounds for exceptions.

Don't worry too much about the torrent of loathing currently sweeping the forum... It only became like this recently, and will die down again a short while after release.
