Anyone with experience using one of these? I am considering plunking down and getting a virpil setup going (long backorder time I assume) and this is the base they sell. Does it hold down pretty well? I see it has screw holes, is it assumed that I'll have it screwed to the desk? Not a thing I really want to do. Is it stable enough on its own without being screwed down? It looks like it would flop all over the place when moving the stick.

tried a friends but it was already fixed down ergo I think it will probably slide when "excited" and hence the holes
It kind of works, at least better than an unsecured Thrustmaster 16000 - but it will be very high above the surface it stands on. This stick is really intended to be bolted to some mounting brackets (or, with the other base, the floor). Whether it will slide around will depend on the surface it stands on. If you don't want to put down tape or something, you might try a few of those sticky grip pads people use to secure e.g. their phones on a dashboard.
According to the Virpil forum the height of the stick could be to high to play comfortable

Hence I bought the MongoosT base.
Tried the throttle MongoosT-50cm3 on his "feet" before attaching to Table Mount (Monster tech) it did not move.

I use my Alpha on a WarBRD base in flight simulator and it is stable enough on the desk without using screws, clamps or desk mounts. It is not too tall for normal use in my opinion.
P.S. If not too late I would suggest ordering the Cosmosim cams - the default cams are perfect for aircraft but for spaceships the progressive effort feels wrong - the Cosmosim cams remove that and make the force uniform throughout axis movement.

You could get a set of these, Hotas Desk Mount pretty cheap but decent. I have and the only issue I have is with the swivel will cant the vertical section, I just added a jam nut to the clamp screw and that fixed it, mase it a lot less fiddly too.
Everything is backorder so time isn't of the essence anyway. I don't know enough to know if I need no center detent or soft center detent.
In reading up, I am leaning toward probably a soft center detent.

But thing is, that puts your chair at least a foot and a half away from your desk, and unless you have a special chair with a slot cut out of the middle of it, you'll be leaning forward to reach everything.
What's more, you would have to have a huge monitor being that far away. And how on earth do you reach your keyboard and mouse?
I just don't see how any of that works without a completely customized desk, chair, etc. That's got to go into the $1500 - $2000 range to make it work. At least.

You mount a small wireless keyboard to your chair (although, with that many buttons, you probably will need it only for communication). You don't need a mouse.
You do if you're me and have to check incoming emails and messages on a regular basis.

The setup on my desk will push you back close to a foot, but I don't use a center stick option. You can see my setup here I have my Hotas mounted on a set of >$ 80 mounts, the main monitor is on a Monoprice gas mount (about $50) and the secondary monitor is on a less expensive mount, about $30. I am thinking about adding a keyboard tray, $60. So, no, unless you're including the price of the stick, throttle and buttons boxes, you won't need to pay that.
Although I like the setup pictured, it is a bit of an overkill for me. If I was a hardcore sim pilot, I possibly could justify that. Right now, I'm trying to justify buying 2 VKB sticks to replace my functioning throttle and T1600m stick. I will be getting the Omni throttle, but do I really need to replace my T1600m (I don't use the rotation axis)?

That's a very nice setup!
I just got my VKB sticks (Space Edition and Omni Throttle). I've just got them screwed down to either side of the keyboard on my pull out shelf. I sit at the computer just as I always have. My arms lay across the arm rest and it puts my hands right on the sticks.
Edit to add: Looking at your picture, looks like you had a pull out shelf as well. I still use mine as it's a corner desk assembly.

Thanks! It's a work in progress... I still have the pull out shelf in the attic. I thought about using it again, but the height was always the issue, I just couldn't get comfortable when I placed the Hotas on it and the stick was cramped in it's movement.
The new mounts work out well, but I have to lean forward to use the keyboard and mouse. I want to add a metal shelf to the throttle mount to place the Razer Orbweaver on it to the left side of the throttle and maybe a shelf on the joystick mount for the mouse, but I think that would be cramped and difficult to use as far as the mouse goes.
Trying to find a low-cost solution for the metal trays, but everything costs so much. I'd thought about 3/16" or 1/4" piece of aluminum would be good for the self. Wood would have to be very thick to keep from warping. The keyboard tray would be perfect and could also be used for the mouse. We'll see.
The main issue is that I have to work from my desk as well and I use a laptop with a docking station that is hooked up to the monitors so anything do can't get in the way of that. Having the monitors on adjustable stands really makes a difference.
That's a bit of an issue for me, having a more limited space, but I'm learning to live with it.
