Current State of Carriers

Actually, thinking of 'change' of favorite ship for the job... the AX war has been making Fleet Carriers necessary there too because of the new AX tools... I'm seeing a lot of people switching from Chieftain, to the Challenger, Crusader and FDL's... plus the big ships with horrible jump ranges. In solo it doesn't matter as much cause you can just focus on 1 malstrom bubble... but in Open, there's a new favorite bubble every other day. And as a mostly solo player, I have to admit, I've been loving playing in 'Open' for the war... Gankers seem to be not as much of a problem, AX pilots are kicking butt and taking names lol...

Ok, I'm typing way too much... Been drinking 'Death Wish' coffee again...

What's funny is the introduction of ExoBio has been slowly changing my 'favorite' Exploration ships. I'm actually starting to really dislike the Phantom because of it's slow turning and horrible 'landing profile'... it won't let me land even if the slightest pebble is under my ship, where as the Viper MK4 will let me do all kinds of slide landings, land on cliffs, turn on a dime... if it only had 1 more utility and 1 more optional slot it would have been the perfect travel ship.
Light and fast aren't just good for racing; I've found these traits to be ideal for exploration as well. DBXs. Couriers. Little hoppers that handle like a dream. These are the ships I actually enjoy exploring in.

That is where a carrier is handy, you can carry a number of dedicated ships and spare modules with you, then have fun wherever you are.

That has always been the sensible advice: Choose your exploration ship by how much you enjoy flying it, not by the jump range. You are going to spend a lot of time in your exploration cockpit, better enjoy it.

This is why I ditched the Anaconda in favor of the Beluga and the Dolphin. The Dolphin is a dream for short range and exobiology, and the Beluga is the best big bring-everything-you-might-ever-need-and-then-some ship for exploration, period. It has some heat issues, but once they are dealt with it is the best big explorer in the game, and it handles in SC like a medium ship. Once I built my Beluga I really started hating the Anaconda.

Most potential exploration ships, with the help of engineering, get a decent enough jump range that gets you everywhere except a few places where you need a Jumpaconda. My two Saud Kruger Explorers both jump somewhere in the 50s with most gear I need and decent hull and shields so I don't pop when gravity gets more than 0.1 g or touch the toast rack when departing.

This is mine, the good ship Mildly Amused Roger. She is home to me, my fleet and my squadron. I use it primarily for CG's and AX. It really feels like home when I jump back from wherever. They have issues, fuel transfer and the frustrating navigation interface but I couldn't do without it.

What's the deal with Hawking's Gap? I'm seeing quite a few people streaming from there lately like it's the 'Hot Spot' but nobody saying why.

Joking aside i went through Hawkings with the carrier on my way to the PUELIAE AA-A H0 Nebula, it was a gold mine for ExoB.
But Hawkings has a lot going on with Guardian stuff and the Dynasty sites.

Wait, the Guardian bubble is Hawkings Gap??? I thought Hawkings gap was much further out. With all the Brain trees and such, I can see that being really good, I haven't been back to the Guardian since I started ExoBio.

Something about the respect of the original players hardships in exploration, made me want to do Sag-A and Beagle in a single ship... with the added FSS, I've been counting the planets to see what's missing since they had to search every planet by eye, so lots of systems are incomplete... but I'm really feeling 'done' with paying homage to my elders.... I want my Carrier ... ;)

Ever since they were introduced, I ignored FCs, considering them just a way to drain excess credits in exchange for marginal benefits. I'd just fly wherever I need to go with my Phantom and have any other ships I might need transferred there by the station.

Then about a month ago, I reconsidered. And the main reason is the thargoid war. And my clumsiness.
One day, I figured where I wanted to fight, jumped my Phantom to a nearby station, and as usual requested my AX ship's transfer. Since that would take >30mins, I went to dinner.
Then when I came back, I had to realize I had transferred the wrong ship.
And then on top of that, my gaming buddy whined that the target AX system didn't have a large pad for his Conda. So we picked another system - at a different maelstrom.
By the time I got there, I had lost over an hour just to get an AX ship close to a CZ. And that was the last straw. The next day I went and bought a bloody FC.

Now the FC stores all the ships I might want to fly, and I just lose less time getting places.

As for the financial aspect, I was mistaken too.
The "purchase" price is really just a deposit, you get almost all of it back if you decomission the carrier.
And you could say that the play time gained by not having to wait for transfers easily pays for the upkeep. And finally, you can make serious money with it by using it as a long range trader.

So all in all, I'm a convert. Carriers are QoL. Peace out.

I don't know if anyone mentioned, but you can also store caustic materials on carriers for as long as you want, no damage. So if you guys are doing a lot of AX stuff, all those hearts, sensors, links and tissue samples can just be left on the carrier for a future CG... My carrier is full of all kinds of junk that I pick up from random place in case it ever gets popular.... Or just put it up for sale, NPC's buy stuff from carriers too (I think that's who's been buying my occupied escape pods... that or they have been expiring)
