Newcomer / Intro HOW do I do passenger missions without getting killed?

You see, I'm a new player and I'm following a guide to earn money. I have to earn money completing tourism passenger missions in Robigo - Sothis. And I often get illegal passengers that I can't even see or kick out of my ship. It's the third time when I got killed because there were some illegals on my ship, and I just lost nearly 25 passengers. So HOW do I check these freaking passengers for illegal or legal status when I'm preparing for a mission? And these goddamn space policemen haven't even got any sense of logic - I took the illegal passengers from one station and then returned them to the same station, but still got killed. Like... how did these criminals even get into the station and WHY didn't anyone arrest them there?? Why are they not getting checked when they are going to travel in space?? Well, that's not what I wanted to ask anyway, I don't care about logic. I only want to know about how do I peacefully grind these idiotic passengers...

There is no obvious "this is an illegal passenger" sign, but chances are, if it is a crime boss, it's an illegal passenger.

As for survival: Be quick, go cold, go silent running. The latter is the reason why many run robigo shieldless, because it is no use anyway when silent running. Align with the mailslot before dropping, and request docking and enter as quickly if you can. If you see the "ship scan" alert, people have reported that deploying and storing hardpoints can "confuse" the scan, but I have no personal experience with that.

You need to practice to be cold, invisible and quick.

My advice would be to (if you can) dock at Robigo Mines outpost rather than the other larger starport. There's no ships at the outpost to scan you so illegal passengers don't matter. However if you're flying a large ship, outposts don't have large enough landing pads..

Good luck and hopefully that helps. o7

For starters, if you don't like this guide, look for another one. There are more ways in ED to make money than playing bus driver - the current gold mine is Exobiology.

Still, if you want to keep on grinding passengers - either don't take on passengers that pay above average (yes, it's a crude guideline, but it's the best you got) or don't get scanned. Which is (presumably) the way these people got around to where you are picking them up. The scans you need to be wary of are done by the patrolling system security craft - the station itself doesn't scan you, but it will unleash some significant firepower once security tagged you as undesireable.

To avoid scans, you'll need to be cool and/or fast. Low heat signature makes it difficult for other ships to detect and scan you. Silent running makes it even more difficult. The excemption from that rule is when they're getting close enough for visual range - a few hundred meters or so.
Or go fast. At >300 m/s, you won't be in range long enough for them to complete the scan. Of course, you then need to be able to slow down before you crash into the end cap.

f you get the "scan detected" warning, you can
  • boost away
  • drop a heatsink
  • start shooting at the scanning ship

Of course, the last one of these options will bring further problems - but it will at least interrupt the scan.

For these kinds of missions, I have a couple of cold ships - my favourite is a Krait Phantom.
In this loadout, I'm using her for evacuation missions from attacked stations/bases. Thargoids are one step more aggressive than your usual system security.

When looking at a passenger mission click on Passenger Profile to see the status. All the mission info was on a single page before Horizons 4.0. Sometimes newer isn't better.

The outpost Robigo Mines versus the station Hauser's Reach doesn't scan when returning, is closer to return to and has better paying missions. I fly a 60LY Asp Explorer to Hauser's Reach, get in my dedicated passenger Python build then do the runs from Robigo Mines. Except maybe thrusters for boost speed engineering isn't really required.

I'm never bothered by the authorities and rarely interdicted but always win it. I always take illegals as they pay better. This will make 20-25M credits per run and can collect grade 5 materials when needed. When you get to this level the biggest thing to deal with is the boredom. Getting to this level use Robigo Mines.

Thank you really much for your answers people! Guess I'll stop taking missions at Hauser's Reach and go to small stations.

I agree. Better do Exobio if you just want credits. It also not so grindy. You will have enough time in ED to grind. So I would refrain from it if you can.

THIS IS THE WAY.

The best profit per hour is from Robigo Mines outpost using a Python with no shield ot fuel scoop and at least 22ly jump range. It's quicker to get to Robigo Mines than Hauser's Reach in supercruise. You will need grade 1 or 2 increased range engineering with mass manager effect for this. Better yet, fit an Engineered FSD V1 from human tech brokers and get mass manager effect added. Brunnel Hub in Ceos is a good place to switch the fuel scoop for another passenger cabin when you arrive in the area.
Here is a Python build.

Note two heatsink launchers which should be used as soon as you hear ship scan detected. You can also charge the FSD while in silent running by dropping a heatsink. Stay in silent running while at Sirius Atmospherics tourist beacon to guard against the system authorities following you there and scanning your ship. Charge the FSD in silent running and use a heatsink to avoid overheating.
